Jul 24th 2008 12:02AM Well, ULEV-2 is really nothing more than a measure of how poisonous its exhaust is... with no regard to how much power the car makes or how much fuel is required to make said power.

As far as addressing this car's power output and its fuel consumption, it actually does a pretty good job.

Turbocharging is really one of the most effective means we have to manage the power/efficiency tradeoff. It's a far better method of providing 'displacement on demand' than cylinder deactivation or other recent tricks are.

Jul 23rd 2008 1:20PM 'Normally/naturally aspirated' is industry-universal jargon for 'not a forced-induction engine'.

Valvetronic certainly falls within this category. Yes, it's a great system, but it's still naturally aspirated.

Jul 23rd 2008 12:23PM Tyler,

I can get over 40mpg in my Saab 9-3, which is rated at 28 highway.

I could also get under 15mpg in a Prius, as our friends on Top Gear have shown us.

The point is, there are plenty of cars out there that can return great mileage if you muster up the willpower to drive them efficiently.

But are you asking for a list of cars that can let you drive like an asshat and return great mileage? That's a pretty tall order, and an unnecessary one at that.

Jul 21st 2008 2:25PM Larry, flame surfacing has nothing to do with paint or color - it's the term they used to describe the *shape* of the sheetmetal, with its interplay of concave and convex surfaces.

SSC (allegedly) to produce the world's fastest electric supercar {Autoblog}

Jul 16th 2008 11:11AM I didn't think they were being literal - I pictured it as being said as a tongue-in-cheek jab at other EVs that need 16 hour recharges.

I was being sarcastic of my own accord when I said the thing about taking one year.

Jul 15th 2008 9:28PM "...will not require a charge 'for six years'..."

The only way I can read that is to assume that they mean it won't take six years to recharge it... not that you can drive it for six years before needing a recharge.

Maybe that's their way of boasting that it'll only take one year to recharge :-/

iPhone app finds your car, dude {Autoblog}

Jul 14th 2008 5:26PM This app does take those factors into account, though... it's not just a google-maps tie-in. If you hit the "with details" button it takes you to a screen where you can quickly input your section (i.e., 'A 4') from a virtual scrolling wheel, and a field where you can type in "4th floor" or other notes if you need to.

So, it does bring all these ideas together in a package. Pretty cool, actually.

Jul 12th 2008 12:39PM BMWs traditionally have floor-pivoted gas pedals. It's just part of their design language.

If I had to guess, I'd say it probably conveys an advantage or two; you can use the tips of your toes to finesse the throttle input at the 'end of the lever' for very precise control, but your entire foot is still covering the pedal.

I hear it makes them a little tricky to heel-and-toe though, until you get used to a different technique.
