Total opens highway hydrogen fueling station in Belgium {Autoblog Green}

You wrote "A H2 hog like the "Hydrogen 7"...

Educate yourself:
slide 20, GGE means "gallon of gasoline equivalent"
http://www.transportation.anl.gov/pdfs/HV/475.pdf
17/30 is not a hog.

Many have divided the LH2 tank capacity into the published range on LH2 and derived false numbers. The inaccuracy of using LH2 tank capacity and range stems from the system auto switching to gasoline when there is still LH2 left to avoid an "empty-warm" refueling, which takes a little longer than a "cold" refuel with LH2 left in the tank.

Jun 5th 2008 11:46AM Scatter, it's consistent to compare hydrogen vehicle emissions to fossil fuel vehicle and BEV emissions. The coal fired electric power plant is ignored for BEVs and the SMR production of hydrogen is ignored for hydrogen powered vehicles. "Personal transport" doesn't mean infrastructure.
It is correct to demand green hydrogen.
It is false to expect the auto industry to go bankrupt financing a green hydrogen infrastructure while the energy companies allocate all profits to more fossil fuel supplies. Renewable and sustainable production of hydrogen is the task of the energy market, with a push from the influencers like government and consumers.
Rather than criticizing the auto industry for spending billions on hydrogen vehicle development, with no stake in the the trillions in profits to be reaped from hydrogen fuel sales, the pressure needs to be directed at clean production of hydrogen from energy companies.
BEVs cannot possibly be the only answer:
- trade mid-east oil dependence for far east battery dependence
- nighttime production of electricity stored where?
- long distance range challenges
- escalating costs of power plants
- power transmission wires in whose backyard?
- aircraft fuel
- many other issues

Jun 4th 2008 5:49PM The hydrogen comes from energy companies, not from auto companies. Auto companies build the cars that run on hydrogen and all are pushing for green hydrogen.
Blaming the auto industry for the not-yet-green hydrogen is like blaming senior citizens for the high cost of prescription medications.

Why is Steam methane reformation of natural gas used today???
Most hydrogen produced today (50 million tons) is used in the refining process and according to Air Products (world's largest producer):
"About 95% of the total global hydrogen production is captive meaning it is used at the site where it is produced."
When will green hydrogen be produced? When the market demands it.

Another Egglectric theory that's "disposable."

BMW Hydrogen 7 drops gasoline from the mix {Autoblog}

Apr 4th 2008 5:30PM Jake, like so many Egglectrics you don't have the facts.
The mono-fuel H7 runs on hydrogen alone and emits no CO2, and you're wrong on the mpg. The LH2 range doesn't suggest running the tank empty so you can't divide miles by kg.
see http://www.transportation.anl.gov/pdfs/HV/475.pdf
slide 20 for an energy equivalent.

So if you and the Egglectrics are in charge of the decisions, which of the following from each pair must we eliminate: Mac or PC, Cable or Satellite, Ipod or MP3 player, battery forklift or propane, cell phone or wired, pen or pencils, IMAX or 35 mm film, VHS or Beta, analog or digital watches. Hmmmm?

Regarding criticism of energy and origins to create hydrogen, do you own anything made of cotton? Do you remember a time in history when cotton was produced using the energy of slaves? Was cotton abolished or slavery?

Don't be an Egglectric.

visit http://www.transportation.anl.gov/ and download the presentation from Argonne where they reported on the energy equivalent test mpg. (slide 20)

To #1: In the USA, the H7s are refueled exclusively at BMW-owned refueling stations.

California Air Resources Board set to weaken ZEV Mandate tomorrow {Autoblog Green}

Mar 26th 2008 5:16PM Let's take a step back and look at the issue objectively.
- A stricter ZEV mandate doesn't mean people will BUY the vehicles in sufficient numbers to meet the regulations. (The law won't allow freebies or sales ending with dealers either.)
- The ZEV mandate HAS pushed battery, fuel cell, and hydrogen technology but an industry in distress can only spend so fast...in balance with all the other consumer demands.
- MOST consumers will not pay extra in taxes for CO2 reduction measures. source http://www.nationalcenter.org/PR-Global_Warming_Gas_Tax_Poll_0308.html

- A reasonable BALANCE in regulatory push plus consumer pull has the greatest chance for success, i.e. minimum unhappy consumers.
- Fossil fuels have been too cheap to persuade consumers to become inconvenienced much, but that is changing.
- To all those who are convinced that a conspiracy exists to suppress ZEV's: OEMs would sell landau roofs if they made a respectable profit, the oil company profits ain't helpin no OEM's that exist today, and the electric car was not "killed" but rather sent back for more tuning after Beta testing.
The CARB decision should be based on sound science that balances the pace and realities of the state-of-the-art with the pace and realities of consumer expectations and acceptance.

Cars and vans contribute only about 9% of the world's CO2 emissions and thus other industries need to be put up on the regulatory podium for recognition. source http://www.wri.org/publication/navigating-the-numbers#

Air Products demonstrates mobile hydrogen fueling station in South Carolina {Autoblog Green}

Mar 25th 2008 11:30AM The location is at the SC "Center for Hydrogen Research" which is near the Savannah River nuclear research facilies. At the Center they are doing research on improvements to processing, production and storage since they realize that hydrogen is a viable carbon-less energy carrier and hydrogen research parallel to advanced battery technology will maximize the options needed to move away from fossil fuels. In short, rather than whining they are seeking solutions.
www.scch2r.org
For the "egglectrics" who are so brilliant they have already selected the best energy carrier of the future and will sign up for the 440v power lines in their back yard, read up on Mac vs. PC, VHS vs. Beta, antenna vs cable vs. satellite, HD vs. BlueRay,....

Push-button starts to alter the interior landscape? {Autoblog}

Feb 29th 2008 9:44AM The author and many commentors have completely missed the point of the start-stop button...and Consumer Union is hopelessly confused on this issue.
The law requires that every motor vehicle have a "key." After much OEM efforts with NHTSA, the "key" can be an electronic code entered into the vehicle's ECU. The advantage of an electronic code is enhanced security via immoblizers. Immobilizers have reduced whole vehicle thefts by an estimated 50%. (Fraud and towing are the lionshare of what's left.)
Even with a start-stop button, there is a physical key-like device, not by law but for practicality (for now). When a vehicle has an immobilizer, there is no legal requirement in the US/Canada for a steering lock. Steering lock prevented almost no thefts but were a huge cost and sometimes failed.
The electronic key fobs are more expensive than past keys, but they are proven to thwart theft, which benefits the consumer. Read your owner's manual and see the part about having a spare key accessible for emergencies.

Feb 6th 2008 5:11PM Lascelles,
understood and thanks for forwarding the request. I saw the reports of the flip flop but could find no Romney-based documentation.
