Audi and BMW to utilize 8-speed gearboxes to take on Lexus {Autoblog}

May 12th 2008 6:34PM A higher redline may allow you to achieve highway speeds with fewer gears, but revving at 6000rpm is NOT good for economy, regardless of load on the engine. The additional gears are to bring down rpm's on the highway. You need low gears for accelerating from a start, and you can only make the rpm gap so large between gears before the car becomes awkward to drive so more gears are needed to fill in the gaps. Opinion varies about how many are needed before you get too much because drive line loss increases with extra gears.

May 12th 2008 6:28PM Carlos, most CVT's lose more power *in the transmission* than a traditional automatic. There is plenty of fluid inside the CVT, in addition to high pressure pumps (much higher pressure than an automatic).

Pmiddle - manual transmissions are typically lighter than an automatic of equal gears. Manuals can be faster than their auto counterparts as well but it requires an experienced driver rather than just placing a brick on the gas.

May 12th 2008 12:19PM Heavy, AWD - torque is your friend. Look at 4WD trucks and semis - they care about torque far more than hp.

Or, you could be like the poster above and put in an S2000 motor and see how that works.

May 12th 2008 11:47AM I wish I could find one of your old Corollas to buy. They were loads of fun when there were still RWD. Plenty of old Fords on Craigslist though.

Aerocivic and its aesthetically-challenged modifications strikes again! {Autoblog Green}

May 12th 2008 11:40AM Why would you feel his numbers are BS? I've done calculations based on air drag, rolling resistance and engine BSFC in my own desire for a high MPG, high speed highway cruiser (35ish at 90mph or so). His numbers are all fully believable considering the amount of aero drag reduction and the small 4 cylinder engine. Only reason I don't do something similar is I don't want that much attention.

May 12th 2008 10:32AM They are posting because a friend of a friend owned a brand X domestic in 1985 and ____ broke on it so therefore all domestics must be inferior and it is their rigteous duty to inform the rest of the world of this.

May 12th 2008 10:30AM They said they were equal in quality, not better. Both companies have the same warranty terms: 3/36k basic, 5/60k powertrain.

May 12th 2008 10:25AM Tragedy = fanboi.

Explain how Buick (and I think Cadillac as well) beat Toyota in the JD long term study recently then. Buick was breathing right down Lexuses neck even.

May 12th 2008 10:23AM First off, early 90's vehicles aren't that old and most *should* still be running. My daily driver is a '92 Chrysler that has yet to need more than routine maintenance in over 160K. My g/f drives a '90 S-10 that was bought at a University surplus auction, so it basically recieved minimal maintenance for the first 15 years of its life. Still, no troubles with it, just maintain and drive it. The S-10 she had before that had over 230K on its 2.8L V6 untill the people we sold it to forgot to check the oil. The vehicle is still going with a replacement engine though.

Anywhere but on the east or west coast (where few domestics were purchased to begin with) you will see plenty of old domestics still going strong and relatively few old imports. It is more a factor of how many were sold in your area to begin with than anything else.
