Nov 15th 2007 4:29PM Jimbo, water emissions are not going to increase the greenhouse effect. Gaseous water in the atmosphere is in equilibrium with liquid water in lakes and oceans. Any excess water produced by extracting hydrogen from methane and reacting it with oxygen is just going to come out of the atmosphere as rain. There will be no net effect on the amount of water in the atmosphere, and at most a small rise in the average sea level.
The home filling stations that extract hydrogen from methane are a temporary measure so that people can actually start using these cars practically before there are enough hydrogen fueling stations to be convenient. The overall energy efficiency of extracting the hydrogen from methane and then reacting it in a fuel cell is probably better than burning it in a combustion engine anyway, resulting in less methane used and therefore less carbon dioxide by-product.

One reason that manufacturers can't seem to reduce weight despite the improvements in materials is the increased amount of safety equipment demanded by customers and the government. Expecting a 2-seat car to have at least four airbags is a very recent development, and you need even more than that if you want to sell a family 4-seater.
