Oct 19th 2006 7:09PM I don't they're planning on ripping anyone off. The contest is plastered all over the site, so I'm sure come next week the people who entered are going to want to see a winner be announced and what the winning entries looked like. I don't think Autoblog would be going full out like this on the contest if they planned on scamming someone in a very public way.

Tons of other websites have done contests like this before too. Slashdot did it for their redesign - as the most recent one I can remember.

And besides, it's not like they're trying to scam work from professionals. I went to college to do graphic design but that's not what I do now - it's just something I like to do sometimes. I'm sure some other people who entered are the same way.

Some who entered might just want the prize, and some others might actually be professionals who decided to throw their hat in the ring and take a shot for a chance at some brag'ability and a cool prize. I'm sure the professionals among the entrants knew the time that was involved and devoted as much EXTRA time as they wanted to.

I don't think John is going to scam us all in a very public way. That'd be suicide for Autoblog's reputation. I'm not worried about it though. I've put a lot of thought and time in to the designs I've submitted thus far and will probably submit some more before the end.

I'm doing it because I want to give back to a site that gives a lot to me on a daily basis, because I like to design stuff and use my mind creatively (which I don't get to do very much), and because honestly a D2 would be a sweet kick back if I was lucky enough to win it. ;) If not - oh well - at least I did something besides bitch and moan.

Oct 19th 2006 8:16AM That's how it usually works in the real world... business wants something, business goes several places for samples and quotes, business picks the best one and they get the work. In this case it's a LITTLE different, but this situation warrants it.

A $1500 AVIC-D2 for designing some business cards is pretty good compensation IMO.

I think the contest is a great idea. I've submitted a lot of entries already, and have put in a lot of time thinking about new ones.
