2008 International Engine of the Year Award nominees announced {Autoblog}
Apr 17th 2008 12:46PM Does anyone know a source for finding out the weight of the engines? I always hear the GM guys extolling the virtue of lbs/hp, and, while I'm not a corvette fanboy, I do appreciate the Collin Chapman theory of vehicle design.
I used to be impressed by hp/liter, but find that argument less compelling than I used to - unless the engine in question is lighter/smaller as well.

Carbonyte to stretch Lambo, Koenigsegg and Veyron into limos {Autoblog}
Apr 13th 2008 8:07PM While the idea of a CCX stretched doesn't do anything for me, I think the lines of the Veyron might not be completely mangled by going to four doors. I'm curious, and that's enough for me to give them the thumbs up.
Nissan GT-R V-Spec lap times stun observers {Autoblog}
Apr 8th 2008 8:47PM Regardless of if you like the GT-R or not, what it and the ZR1 are doing to redefine performance will benefit us all. The next base Vette and Z car will be enhanced by this commitment to trashing the competition, and the competition will have to pick up their game something fierce.

Lane splitting - should it be legal? {Autoblog}
Mar 21st 2008 10:29AM I'll echo many of the pro-splitting comments on this topic. When I moved to CA, I initially thought that splitting was a bad idea. But, as I tried it, I soon found I liked it. It's not as dangerous as many think, but does need to be done with caution. Close to a decade of full time motorcycling and the only accidents I had when I lived out there were when I was struck from behind (twice) while stopped.
I'll be the first to agree that the privilege is abused by far too many. And that applies equally to the crotch rocket crowd racing through at 20mph over traffic speed and the Open-Pipes-So-They-Know-I'm-Coming boys who scare the bejezus out of soccer moms when they pull up next to them.
One thing I haven't seen mentioned is the single best time to split - at a stoplight. Nobody is moving - and even the slowest Goldwing is likely to out-accelerate most everybody else when the light turns green. Think about splitting within that context - safety isn't an issue, so if you are still against it, then you are probably just jealous of bikes being able to avoid congestion.
And for those worried about increased litigation or liability - California has the reputation of being one of the most litigious places on earth, and they don't seem to have had a problem with it...

REPORT: new Lamborghini Gallardo to be called LP560-4 {Autoblog}
Feb 27th 2008 10:57AM Exotic cars need exotic names. LP560-4 is not nearly as evocative as Gallardo. Just as 512TR can't hold a candle to Testarossa. It's just a number and letter soup. Don't make me decode your exotics name - give me a poetic whiff of far off lands and a dream of slicing through the corner over the cliffs of someplace I've only read about.
The worst of it is that the numbers seem to lock the car down to a certain time. Five years from now when every exotic car worth it's salt is sporting 750 horses under the hood, do you really want to pull up in something with 2/3 the bragging rights?
