Bush says no bailouts for automakers {Autoblog}

Jul 16th 2008 10:27AM to NotYou - you're correct on IndyMac, but incorrect on the other two:

Bear Sterns - the fed guaranteed BILLIONS of Bear's worthless "collateral", enabling MS to buy them. This was a definite bailout, with the fed chipping in money to enable the sale to happen. hell, even Paulson defends it.

http://www.iht.com/articles/2008/03/16/business/paulson.php

and for Fannie / Freddie, how do you call Bush pushing a plan to have the fed BUY EQUITIES (ie, stock) from the two companies??

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=aNHPA3k7pAAQ

definitely don't think that the fed should be bailing out automakers, but don't think that they should be buying equities in Freddie / Fannie either...

Audi A1 not bound for U.S. shores {Autoblog}

Jul 13th 2008 3:08PM to Zamfir:

care to explain why the A1 would cost as much as an A3? it's stated that it's a MINI competitor, but it's going to be priced $5k more? gimme a break. the MCS starts at 21k, and the A3 starts at $26k. BMW figured out how to make a premium, sporty, small car with a 1.6t engine, and sell it at $21k for a profit. for some reason Audi can't?

Audi A1 not bound for U.S. shores {Autoblog}

Jul 13th 2008 2:59PM dear Audi - F you. don't lump us all into one user group, the "fat dumb soccer moms and nascar dads who equate car size with value". my next vehicle will be:

small
lightweight
hatchback
good handling
6mt
good power to weight ratio
small turbo engine (1.4-1.6l)
priced under 25k

that's the Cooper S, the MiTo, Abarth 500, Fiesta ST, Polo GTI (not coming here either) and yes, the Audi A1. if you're stupid enough not to bring it here, I'll cross the A1 off my list right now. I don't need roomy seating for 5, 95% of my driving is just me, and the other 5% my wife is with me.

thanks for nothing.

Chevy Cruze to be built in Lordstown {Autoblog}

Jul 10th 2008 10:29AM +1 for Monza, but I'd prefer a smaller 2+2 with RWD for that instead. had a 1980 Monza, and while the build quality was horrible, it was an awesome, fun ,little 4sp.

Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart (supposedly) to start under $27k {Autoblog}

Jul 10th 2008 10:00AM edit - the Ralliart is at 94.6mph when it completes the 1/4, not 96.

Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart (supposedly) to start under $27k {Autoblog}

Jul 10th 2008 9:58AM what's pretty funny is the numbers:

Civic Si - 0-60 in 6.7sec
Ralliart - 0-60 in 6.6sec
Civic Si - 1/4 mile in 15.1sec @ 93.8mph
Ralliart - 1/4 mile in 14.8sec@96mph

on top of that, I'd bet an Si would whoop a Ralliart around the track, too, judging by that Edmunds article. yup, the Si must really suck compared to the Mitsubishi... lol.

Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart (supposedly) to start under $27k {Autoblog}

Jul 10th 2008 9:48AM my opinion is that it's too expensive for what it is. c'mon, forcing the dual clutch on us so that it's automatically $1500 more expensive? it starts $3500 over a WRX?

combine that with the fact that it has *only* 237hp, and the parasitic drive loss that AWD has, and you're not exactly talking about a barn-stormer of a car here. AWD is definitely necessary when pushing a lot of hp, but for anything under the Evo/STI I'd opt for a FWD (Fail Wheel Drive, as one poster put it) hot hatch or a RWD car... this is overpriced, underpowered, and by the sounds of the Edmunds article, purposely neutered to avoid stealing sales from the Evo.
