Americans skeptical of SMARTs for the real world {Autoblog}

Jul 3rd 2006 7:00PM Once again, the unfounded paranoia runs rampant!

Obviously, you can't always avoid a crash. But it's still simplistic to suggest that you're signing your death warrant by getting a Smart fortwo.

Large trucks and SUVs are not just more likely to roll over. The extra size and weight make it harder for these big vehicles to avoid a crash in the first place. Braking distances will often be larger, evasive maneuvers are more difficult, and you could well clip someone else's car just by making a hasty lane change.

I'd rather reduce the odds of having an accident in the first place than isolate myself in tons of sheet metal and brace for impact.

SMART coming to the U.S., Penske to distribute {Autoblog}

Jun 28th 2006 5:35PM #19:

The diesel version of the Smart fortwo gets 60 MPG, and that's a real-world figure; I've read a number of reports from people who've managed about 70 MPG driving more cautiously.

DaimlerChrysler to make SMART move in U.S. {Autoblog}

Jun 25th 2006 6:54PM Why are so many people contributing to the myth that Smarts are unsafe in an SUV-heavy American market?

First, these cars actually have better safety ratings than some of the larger compact cars. The fortwo has side-impact airbags; they're not standard on most cars in the class.

Plus, it's a circular argument to claim that you need a big car because others are driving big cars. Isn't that in effect saying that no one in the US should drive a small car, ever? You can't just wait for someone else to blink first. Get what you need, not a multi-ton sheetmetal placebo.

New Apple ads mean spirited? {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Jun 20th 2006 10:52AM My question is why Apple still insists on that old ad style. The white background, steady (though not static) shot, quiet-voiced Apple had has been around since at least 1998. It almost puts you to sleep.

Apple should take a page from its own advertising for the iPod. You obviously can't have silhouettes dancing to the latest hit with MacBooks in hand, but they're much more interesting: they have energy, they're stylistically unique, and they don't risk condescending the audience. Maybe Apple could have an ad where a silhouette sits down at an iMac, turns it on, and the screen overflows with light and colour.

Let's face it: Steve will have to step down sooner or later, too {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Jun 19th 2006 12:38PM What Apple needs is a charismatic leader more than anything - someone who isn't just good at managing businesses but also has a vision of his own or at least knows how to keep the vision alive.

My first thought is that Phil Schiller would be a good candidate because of his presentation skills, but I don't know if he's that much younger than Jobs. It's a shame Jonathan Ive isn't known as a public speaker. He's had a large part in the design direction of Apple and could likely inspire some great hardware.

TVR finds a home {Autoblog}

Jun 17th 2006 11:20AM Build quality. That's all that really matters in a rejuvenated TVR. One thing that perpetually hurt the company's reputation was that cars fell apart in all the wrong ways. I've seen a few Top Gear and Fifth Gear reviews where knobs came off (no jokes, please)! If TVR can offer cars that are semi-reliable - no one expects a sports car to be perfect - they'll be on the fast-track to profit.

Get your run on - Apple taking preorders for the Nike+iPod Sport Kit {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Jun 14th 2006 3:05PM I've heard that the battery life on the sensor is about 1200 hours, but I wouldn't have a source to quote on that. At any rate, it should last a few years before it needs to be replaced. I wouldn't object heavily to another $29 on that kind of frequency (assuming the kit is still being sold by then).

Hyundai announces Accent pricing, adds a hatchback {Autoblog}

Jun 13th 2006 2:02PM Let's just hope it doesn't earn the moniker James May (of Top Gear) gave the earlier model: the Hyundai Accident.

Windows Vista on my MacBook Pro (because I'm an idiot) {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Jun 11th 2006 12:20PM If you really want to be specific, Vista is built on top of Windows Server 2003, which in turn involved major changes to the Windows architecture. It's not a complete rewrite by any means, but it's not just a slight tweak of XP, either.

Nvidia intros Windows Mobile multimedia platform {Engadget Mobile}

Jun 9th 2006 9:22PM My understanding is that the GoForce 5500 can run Quake 3 at 1024x768 at about 30 FPS - at E3, they ran a barebones prototype hooked up to a computer LCD to prove it.

You can see some footage at http://e3coverage.com (I'd link directly to the clip, but I want to be nice to the site author).
