Sorry, your SUV is now worthless {Autoblog}

Apr 30th 2008 1:39PM I'm in construction, and I can't help but notice that late '80s F-250s did everything we ever need to do, and yet the new ones look twice as large. We're also annoyed by how tall the sides are on the newest models (our newest trucks are still previous-gen).

Most people - and a lot of companies, too - could stand to go down a size. That's what's going to start happening, not Tahoe owners buying Fits and Yarises. There are more Rav4s and CR-Vs than ever, and more companies are entering that segment. Accords are large enough for full-sized Americans. People are moving towards vehicles with mpg in the 20s and hey, it's a good thing.

Proposed CAFE rules hurt Porsche, small powerful vehicles {Autoblog}

Apr 28th 2008 7:29PM Have they learned nothing? SUVs didn't become popular just because of consumer demand... CAFE made them work better for automakers.

I agree with CAFE's ultimate goal, but it's only going to work if they give companies a reason to build (and sell) more small vehicles. That means forcing them to try to satisfy a wider market - sports cars buyers included - with small or midsized vehicles. That, in turn, means being harsher on big ones than little ones.

Apr 21st 2008 11:49PM Do you guys take issue with existing laws on obscenity in public?

9-year-old Mick Schumacher makes his race debut in Spain {Autoblog}

Apr 21st 2008 11:46PM Not necessarily. Fernando Alonso's parents were a factory mechanic and a department store worker. His dad liked carting though, and built a cart for Fernando's older sister. She didn't care for it, so Fernando tried it out when he was 3 and did well enough that prize money and full sponsorship at age 10 carried him through.

Beijing 2008: Porsche unveils the Cayenne Turbo S {Autoblog}

Apr 20th 2008 10:41PM I wish Porsche would actually change something besides the headlights between one generation and the next.

Beijing 2008: HongQi SUV concept doesn't look like a photochopped MKT {Autoblog}

Apr 20th 2008 10:40PM The 'q' in romanicized Chinese is pronounced like ch in cheese.

Chinese has a few consonants that all sound like ch to English speakers but sound different to them, which is why one of them ended up with 'q' even though that isn't very intuitive. 'c' is even worse. When you see 'c' in a romanicized Chinese word, it's pronounced like tz in chintzy.

Nissan considering four-door GT-R for Infiniti {Autoblog}

Feb 18th 2008 3:46PM Yeah, the GT-R has never been like the Corvette. It's more an M3/M5 sort of car... a souped up version of an entry-level sport/luxury car (the Skyline) whose base versions were always available in coupe and sedan form. I think the GT-R version was always a coupe, but there were other versions in between the base and GT-R models that you could get as a sedan. Like an inline-6 turbo RWD version.

It makes sense, and a sedan would be good differentiation from the GT-R.

Japanese TV show determines "Parking Champions" {Autoblog}

Jan 30th 2008 2:08PM The commentator adds a lot to it, kind of how Andres Cantor got a lot of people into soccer.

GMC unibody pickup concept to debut in Chicago, not New York {Autoblog}

Jan 25th 2008 12:50PM Funny how the comments aren't as angry as they were when the Ridgeline was introduced. It does look useful.

Ashtrays and cigarette lighters going up in smoke {Autoblog}

Jan 24th 2008 8:50PM Smokers don't even use their in-car ashtrays!

If they didn't spew their smoke out their window and throw their waste onto the street, I wouldn't mind them.
