Is the Volt nothing more than bailout bait? {Autoblog Green}
Jul 3rd 2008 7:35AM GM isn't in debt. They have $21B in the bank.

GM is burning through $1B a month, and look at the long term debt - $38B with $76B in other liabilities. Look at their quarterly cash flow and they have negative earnings from operations, which is bad. Last quarter they paid out $774M in interest alone on the debt that they have. Credit agencies have cut their debt rating meaning that if they have to borrow money as they burn through their cash, it will have to pay higher interest rates.
Assuming $1B in burn a month (and no new borrowing) at the end of this year they will have @ $16B in cash on hand. It's advisable to go into bankruptcy protection with cash in hand to effect a turnaround... It's going to get very interesting before 2008 is done.
As for the Volt, seeing is believing. Such is GM's current reputation in the market place.

GM exceeds Malibu sales expections in the first month by, oh, 2,500 cars {Autoblog}
Nov 25th 2007 12:17PM so GM launches a car with $150M in advertising and only expected to sell 500? Lutz talked about this car like the 2nd coming and they only forecasted 500 units?
come on... sounds like they low-balled their estimates so they could generate press like this (Malibu exceeds expectations by x%!!!) and create some positive buzz.

Jul 4th 2007 12:15PM So what happens when the business that is sponsoring a couple cop cars needs a favor?
but then again if our lawmakers can accept campaign money etc from large corporations & wealthy individuals and "not be corrupted" then why can't our police or judges?

2008 LS3 Corvette spotted in Kentucky {Autoblog}
Apr 24th 2007 10:55AM I have a question:
The Corvette is undoubtedly a performance value, so how is GM able to offer such performance for such a low price (compared to Euro cars with similar performance)?
Are they taking a loss on the Corvette in order to maintain a Halo car? Are SUV's & pickup subsidising the R&D and production costs of the 'Vette?
Or is it they are simply sacrificing the mark-ups that the Euro competition is commanding in order to maintain the "affordable performance" aura that is associated with the car?
This has to be an expensive car to develop and build, especially when it's not being produced in mass numbers and across many platforms like other GM products.
Thanks.
