Gadling's resident pilot explains what life in the cockpit is like

Turkish pilot fired for letting 15-year-old fly plane, airline says {Gadling}

Sep 25th 2008 10:35AM Overkill? The pilot should absolutely be fired for his transgression. Flying a plane isn't like bagging groceries. Somehow, "dude, sorry for killing 75 people" isn't the same as, "dude, sorry for crushing your eggs." Shouldn't people who are responsible for the lives of others be held to a higher standard? How would you feel if your doctor let a 15 yr old perform open heart surgery on you? Somehow, "But, he was really good at the game Operation" wouldn't cut it (no pun intended). You don't get another chance to fix a stupid, avoidable, gross error in judgment after you've killed someone (including yourself). Any pilot lacking the maturity and common sense to know that a 15 yr old with "flight simulator experience" shouldn't be controlling a commercial liner should never fly again. Passengers want to believe that their pilots have the knowledge and ability to get them out of a sticky situation...not the stupidity to endager their lives. Assuming the story is true, this pilot clearly lacked requisite judgment and skill to be placed in a position where he had passengers (including the 15 yr old faux pilot) in his care. I wouldn't want him as a baby sitter let alone piloting my aircraft.

Saudi Arabia threatens Nissan boycott over Israeli ad {Autoblog}

Aug 8th 2008 11:58AM There's a BIG difference between social commentary in advertising based on fact (i.e., people making money on oil want to sell more oil, and probably don't care much for cars that are fuel efficient to keep owners away from the pumps) versus stereotypes about people of different races, religions, etc.

The ad wasn't depicting the Muslim or middle-eastern people in a negative light. It was a sarcastic shot at wealthy business people who benefit from the sale of oil. The fact that they're Saudi is almost beside the point. They could have portrayed GWB with his fellow oil croanies around a table getting upset about it.

Maybe wealthy business people should be a protected class. Give me a freakin' break.

Rumormill: 350 hp Volvo C30 R in the works {Autoblog}

Jul 20th 2008 12:22AM As an owner of an '05 S60R I find this somewhat disappointing. 350hp is great but it'll be more expense and less fun than an STI or R32 and still not present Volvo with a much needed competitor to BMW's 335xi...let alone the M3. Oh well.

The right way to Roll(s): Phantom stretch limo by Mutec {Autoblog}

Feb 3rd 2008 8:06PM There's actually a guy in my parents' neighborhood who owns one. Took me by complete surprise when I caught a glimpse of it this weekend. And, don't go jumping to conclusions, they don't live in that kind of neighborhood - it's parked in his driveway. I'd put money on him owning a limo company (it's parked right next to a Zimmer limo) or something or just ridiculously extravagant. Oh, and as for my impression of it in person, it puts the "f" in fugly.

The funniest ad for a 1996 Volvo 850R you'll ever read {Autoblog}

Jan 5th 2008 3:28PM No such thing as a "GLT Turbo".

In '96, there was a base car, a GLT, a Turbo, an R and some kind of Limited Edition Turbo option. The GLT shared the same non-turbocharged 168hp 2.4 liter engine as the base car. In '97, they upgraded the GLT with an LPT (low pressure turbo) that boosted hp to 190hp (I remember because my parents had one - a '97 that is).

Pininfarina concept coming to Geneva this March {Autoblog}

Dec 17th 2007 10:44AM Yes, it was. Thank you for the clarification!

Pininfarina concept coming to Geneva this March {Autoblog}

Dec 17th 2007 10:24AM Huh? I guess James Glickenhaus' contract with Pininfarina didn't prohibit them from taking the design he presumably spent millions on and offering it as a 'concept' in lightly modified form. This 'concept' is a thinly veiled copy of the P4/5. Doesn't a concept usually precede the actual thing?

Dodge Challenger SRT-8 actually stickers at $40,095 {Autoblog}

Nov 30th 2007 11:10PM I can get my hands around a $40K 300...but a $40K Challenger is just plain stupid...just like a $50K Mustang. I'm sure they'll both sell out regardless.

eBay Find of the Day: 1964 Pontiac Banshee Prototype XP-833 Coupe {Autoblog}

Nov 25th 2007 12:19AM The car sold at Barrett Jackson back in 2006 for ~$214K (which includes the 8% commission paid). Even if we assume that the car was a steal at that price, what justifies an asking price that's nearly 7 times what the current owner paid!?

Corvette ZR1 sighted on track at Laguna Seca, but not unveiled {Autoblog}

Oct 20th 2007 1:17AM Wow, that was a whole lotta hype over nothing.

- Boring Video (could have been a Buick lapping the track)
- Boring Audio (bad St. Elmo's Fire flashback?)

The beginning was the best part by far; and where was the AUDIO of the car pulling out of the truck to head toward the track?
