May 21st 2008 11:36AM magnesium is the new aluminum, expect to see more sub assemblies made from cast magnesium.
as for the total weight reduction you could get by going to CF for cars, cut in half is a ridiculous over estimate. even if the entire unibody, body panels, door, hood and trunk lid were made from CF you would only save between 500 and 800 lbs off an average family sedan. the majority of the weight in cars comes from the majority of parts. meaning that is all the thousands of little things that add up. unless they start making HVAC ducts, bracts, steering racks, gas tanks, and NVH reducers out of ultra-light materials, you will not see more than 20% reduction in curb weight.

North America Ford Fiesta rumored to come in under $15k {Autoblog}
May 21st 2008 11:12AM i really wanted the 3 door fiesta but i just couldn't wait any longer for a new car, had to settle for the fit.
this car is going to be a hit, gas is not going to go down any time soon and once americans realize that 'really nice small car' is not an oxymoron, these things will fly off dealer lots as fast as they can be made.
i wish i could have waited to buy one but it just wasn't an option.

just curious, if you need at least 40 mpg for "the economics" to work out for you, what do you drive now?

May 21st 2008 11:02AM i think 40+ is a little optimistic. maybe high 30s on the freeway, mid 30s average depending on your freeway/city mix and how you drive it.

Camaros, turbos, mpgs and the underappreciated V8 {Autoblog}
May 18th 2008 11:20PM what about both?
how about a light hybrid, DI twin-turbo, cam in cam VVT, cylinder shut off, 6.2 liter LS10?
im thinking 700 hp and 40 mpg! ;)
Camaros, turbos, mpgs and the underappreciated V8 {Autoblog}
May 18th 2008 11:05PM good point, the ls3 is a much better engine than the bmw v8. not only does it make more hp, but it gets better mileage, weighs less, costs less, and is much simpler to maintain and repair.
plus, the hp/cam cannot be beat!
