Mercury rising: Thursday announcement expected to lay out Euro-infused future {Autoblog}
Jul 22nd 2008 7:12PM I want a new Mercury Cougar that competes with the M3, G37 and IS350. The new Cat should be RWD and powered by a 3.5L TwinForce (get rid of the Ecoboost name - it sucks). Use styling cues from the 1968 Cougar and make it kick butt agains the upscale competition.
Bring the Euro Ford body styles over but built on Ford underpinnings to save money and spread the cost of the chassis and production facilities. Give the products Mercury distinctly styling cues and upscale interiors etc. to jsutify the premium price. Offer a Mercury version of the Edge and Flex and Focus all with upscale treatments and Mercury design cues.
Do it yesterday.

Jul 22nd 2008 4:52PM Origin
From Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, 1594:
JULIET:
'Tis but thy name that is my enemy;
Thou art thyself, though not a Montague.
What's Montague? it is nor hand, nor foot,
Nor arm, nor face, nor any other part
Belonging to a man. O, be some other name!
What's in a name? that which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet;
So Romeo would, were he not Romeo call'd,
Retain that dear perfection which he owes
Without that title. Romeo, doff thy name,
And for that name which is no part of thee
Take all myself.
Skakespeare continued by saying that bring the Euro-Sport products to the U. S. is a great idea!

Jul 22nd 2008 1:49PM Which company is going to offer a full size family sedan that gets 80 MPG? Gee, the big 3 could just sell the cars they built 15 years ago under the DOE funded Program for a New Generation of Vehicles?
No - that would make too much sense.

Jul 22nd 2008 1:28PM Of course they should sell the Euro-Sport stuff as Mercurys in the U. S. - this is a no brainer!
They can use the same platforms as Ford but put a Euro style body on it and call it a Mercury. This way they can charge a premium price for the up-scale Mercury product.
They should have done this years ago. People have been screaming for this for years I hope that Mullaly can figure this out and capitalize on Mercury's up market position to get a premium price for the Euro-Sport offerings.
While they are at it - bring back the "Winged Helmut Mercury God" as the brand badge!

Jul 16th 2008 1:22PM Just a thought. GM (and Ford and Chrysler) may want to consider building some stuff that people actually want to buy?
Then again, maybe that is asking too much?
Mercury dying: No updates planned past 2010 {Autoblog}
Jul 15th 2008 6:29PM I agree.
If FoMoCo goes Sweeny Todd on us and assassinates the once proud Mercury brand I will never buy squat from them again!
I would rather hold my nose and buy a foreign car than buy from a company with no heart and no passion for their craft.
Make Mercury what it can and should be - an absolutely great American Marque with style. Give people a reason to buy and be proud of their new Mercury.
Business is about competition - so compete! Take a lesson from Pete Carroll at USC - compete every day to be the best.
Henry Ford would not roll over and play dead to Toyota and Honda.

Jul 15th 2008 4:23PM If FoMoCo kills Mercury it will start the death spiral for the whole company. Why go out of your way to piss off long time loyal customers?
Mercury should be the up-scale Euro-Sport brand for FoMoCo using Ford platforms with Ford of Europe body styles. It makes perfect sense to have a volume brand (Ford), a lux brand (Lincoln) and a mid level brand (Mercury). This allows loyal customers to go through the progression over 30 years or so starting with a Ford subcomact and ending in a big top of the line Lincoln.
It would not be expensive to make Mercurys on Ford platforms but with high style sheet metal.

Jul 14th 2008 8:51PM How come half the guys in the photo are jaw jackin' and not working. No wonder it takes five years to bring out a new design!
Anyone know why they let the Lincoln LS rot and did not refresh it? That was a seet ride for the few years it was around.
