Jul 7th 2008 4:44AM Artie, Ford never licensed the technology from Toyota, Ford had been working on it around the same time as Toyota, and due to the similarity of both technologies, struck a licensing deal with Toyota to prevent patent-related lawsuits.
It's a common misconception that they're sourcing their technology directly from Toyota, but the only automaker that's doing this is Nissan.

This is some of the things that eased China's way into our economy - they did just like the Americans, except for cheaper.

It's primarily why the T225 X is already for sale everywhere but here.
And remember that UAW deal that said something about another unnamed small car powered by a 1.4L Turbo engine being built alongside the Cobalt or something? It's probably it.
Making small cars in the US isn't exactly unprofitable anymore.
