Obsidian SG1: 800 hp, twin-supercharged uber-Stang {Autoblog}

May 1st 2008 4:00PM With so much fabrication eye candy as there is on this car I would've thought they could have found someplace for the intercoolers other than directly over the exhaust manifolds.

Officially Official: Corvette ZR1 makes 638 hp and 604 lb-ft {Autoblog}

Apr 25th 2008 5:17PM Ummm... There have been multiple production supercharged models with over 100hp/L:

Chevy Cobalt SS Supercharged: 205hp and 2.0L
Mercedes C-Class: 189hp and 1.8L
Mini Cooper S: 168hp and 1.6L

And these were all with the 5th generation Eaton superchargers. All got over 30+MPG and lots of power to spare.

Apr 24th 2008 11:47AM Mercedes only clutched the first generation of supercharged engines... The second gen vehicles (and presently in production) used electronic "bypassing" for the roots supercharger in conjunction with an electronic throttle. The engine throttle could be wide open at highway speeds to minimize pumping losses. If the electronic throttle sensed it needed more acceleration the supercharger bypass was closed to provide boost for more power.

A supercharger with no internal compression (like a Roots supercharger) only draws around 1/3 hp when being bypassed.

The Mercedes supercharged four cylinder got better fuel economy and had more torque than the six cylinder that replaced it.

Apr 24th 2008 11:40AM Downsizing and boosting with a roots type supercharger (with no internal compression) makes perfect sense. Especially if it turns out to be the new efficient TVS supercharger.

Downsize for economy, boost for performance. No exhaust backpressure from a turbo or lag to impede fuel economy.

This is definitely a move in the right direction.

Apr 3rd 2008 10:53AM What emissions issues would that be? From my knowledge the turbo carries more emissions issues than a supercharger does (slow catalytic converter light off). Not to mention the performance hit turbos take due to emissions due to EGR which makes the turbos lag even more.
