German automakers back weight-based CO2 proposal {Autoblog}
Aug 15th 2007 11:46AM CO2 g/km per kg vehicle mass is a good measure for a given speed. Though, to do it right, you need to have a few others: a value for CO2 g/(m/s^2) per kg for positive acceleration (speeding up) and another value for CO2 g/(m/s^2) per kg for negative acceleration (slowing down); and a third value for CO2 g/s for idle. Effectively, the manufacturer will need to control power output, torque output and idle for CO2 instead of max power, max torque.

VIDEO: Kubica crashes Canadian GP {Autoblog}
Jun 11th 2007 12:38PM The Grand Prix was an HDTV broadcast on Canada's TSN network. Suprisingly, Formula 1 Administration -- Bernie Ecclestone's group -- only sometimes feeds the race using their own production facilities and HDTV cameras. F1 Administration sometimes relies on local broadcasters feeds as the world feed; and frankly the quality of local broadcaster feeds is uneven at best.
Detroit Auto Show: We finally bring live shots of the Ford Focus and Five Hundred {Autoblog}
Jan 9th 2007 9:22PM Re. the 500: "Feh?!?" Fleet sales here we come.
I have now thought for a long time that if you want to see how innovative a car manufacturer is that you ought to look at the small cars the manufacturer produces. The low IQ (innovation quotient) of this Focus makes Forrest Gump look like an Albert Einstein.
Honestly, wouldn't it of been easier to just but a whole bunch of Kia and slap a blue-oval on them?
The Focus fender vent looks to be a necessary hole in the fender to accomodate the stamped metal. If they wanted to do something at least a bit cool they would put a turn signal into the fender vent a-la BMW Z4 side-mounted turn signal. Give it some blue LEDs for the nighttime, and yellow for turn indicators.
The interior center stack is just plain ugly with that button array. Worse yet, the gaps between parts in the interior are HUGE!!! Interior fit and finish at line rate are going to be a challenge; and with it, interior squeaks and rattles.
Oh, come on, Ford, you could do better. Right?!?
Score one for the free market: US dumps most of its steel tariffs {Autoblog}
Dec 15th 2006 2:29PM @Jason
Steel prices were around USD425 a ton back in 2001 the last time these tariffs were reviewed. Steel prices are now around USD750 a ton.
@Shawn
No, it doesn't mean that other countries will reduce tariffs on US goods. Tariffs like those imposed by the ITC are unilateral by the US only. Only the Congress can impose tariffs as a customs tax. Though, if the President negotiates a free-trade treaty either bilaterally like NAFTA or multilaterally like GATT, the Senate must review and approve the treaty on behalf of the US.

VIDEO: "It's so fast that even a dead man will scream" {Autoblog}
Nov 21st 2006 7:17PM About "too fast"; I'm guessing it is a mistranslation for something in Japanese like "damn fast" or "fxxxking fast".
I did an English -> Japanese -> English translation using Google's translation service, and came up with the result: "damn fast" -> Japanese -> "it is ugly, it is fast". Oddly enough, "fxxxking fast" -> Japanese -> "it is fast very".
