From the Awesome Files: V6 Miata auto-x weapon {Autoblog}

May 12th 2008 12:11AM No, the Duratec 2.5l made 170hp in the Contour with either transmission, using 87 octane regular. The Mazda 2.5l in the 626, which was *not* the same, made 164hp using 89 octane mid-grade, a bit less with regular as the computer dialed back the timing . Considering that the contemporaneous Nissan 3.0l in the Maxima made 160/190 hp depending on trim, while the Toyota 3.0l in the Camry made 188hp, this is not at all bad.

I'm sure he could get even more power out of it, but maximum power may not be what he's concerned with.

Battlestar Galactica: Faith - VIDEO {TV Squad}

May 10th 2008 3:20AM I may have missed it, but if Anders has been a pilot for a while now, why doesn't he have a call sign? Almost everybody else gets addressed by their call sign more often than their name, but he's always Anders or Sam. I nominate "Spoon" in a nod to Michael Trucco's previous role as a fighter pilot.

I think Sharon's blood could have been just one of those cool arty shots that filmmakers like to throw in, but it's possible that it was to remind us that the humanoid cylons bleed red just like humans, and therefore Gaeta getting shot doesn't rule him out as a cylon. Which reminds me, didn't the centurion get taken out by gunfire rather easily for a metal-skinned fighting robot?

Mazda survey reveals pricing and packages for Mazda6 {Autoblog}

May 8th 2008 4:41PM The current 2.3l PZEV has 146hp and is rated 21/29 mpg with the manual. So you get 16% more zoom for the same fuel economy and for $60 higher base price with standard stability control and TPMS that were previously not available.

I have not taken the survey yet but I suspect they are showing different prices to different people to gauge reaction. The current moonroof costs $700 and it costs less than $1100 for an aftermarket installation so $1800 is outrageous unless it's a package with additional pricey content.

Sci-fi TV show concepts you never saw {TV Squad}

Beijing 2008: Hyundai debuts facelifted Elantra {Autoblog}

Apr 23rd 2008 3:11PM Front and rear are definitely improved, but now the rolly-poley side profile looks even more out of place. Hyundai seems to have two design teams--one that did the Accent, Sonata, and Tuscon,which are a bit boxy; and one that did the Santa Fe, Vera Cruz, and Azera, which look like the front and rear ends got slightly melted. The Elantra looks like it was originally styled by team 2, and then freshened by team 1.

Khandi Alexander is leaving CSI: Miami {TV Squad}

Apr 21st 2008 4:24PM Don't forget calling every corpse "baby boy" or "baby girl" no matter how old they are. This is of course the writers' fault, and not the actress', but Sid and Doc Robbins manage to be colorful without being so annoying.

Ben-Hur to be remade as a mini-series {TV Squad}

Apr 10th 2008 7:38PM Yes, and the reductio ad absurdem of your argument is that we no longer need to produce Shakespeare's plays, or even read them, because they've all been filmed multiple times with some excellent casts. The 1959 Ben-Hur was made principally to capitalize on the success of DeMille's remake of his own "Ten Commandments", adding widescreen, color, and sound which makes it more accessible to the illiterate than the silent black and white versions. Acting styles changed, as they have again in the subsequent half-century. Models and rear-projection replaced ships and extras in the other big set piece, the battle with the sea pirates. It's much longer yet drifted even further from its roots in Wallace's novel. So yes, if Gus van Sant wants to make a shot-for-shot remake of a Hitchcock film, except in color instead of black and white, I see no reason to watch it, but he's free to go ahead. If someone wants to go back to an old novel and see what can be done that may not have been in the previous stage and screen adaptations, I am fine with it. And enjoying Olivier's version of Hamlet doesn't make Zefirelli's or Branagh's, numerous BBC productions, or even the local high school's, out of place.

Ben-Hur to be remade as a mini-series {TV Squad}

Apr 10th 2008 2:38PM Since, as you acknowledge, the famous version of Ben-Hur *was* a remake (and so was the 1956 "The Ten Commandments", by the way), I can't figure out what your argument is. No remakes after there's a version which achieves some specific level of regard? Movies are filmed plays. Plays are produced over and over with different casts, sometimes for centuries--there was a very popular stage version of Wallace's novel, in fact.

It's too bad some productions are not as good as others, and too bad when some genius thinks a currently popular personality with extremely limited talent is just what's needed to jazz up some new version. But I won't prejudge someone apparently sincerely trying, particularly if there is some different approach to the original source material--as you may know, some Hollywood versions, especially from the classic era, contain little from the original book or play except for the title and names of characters.
