IIHS crash tests small pickups, majority flunk {Autoblog}
Jul 24th 2008 1:08PM Another interesting thing about this testing is cab style in relation to safety. For example, the same generation Dodge Dakota club cab did a whole "grade" worse in the front offset crash than the crew cab.
Presumably this would also apply to the side impact, as club cabs (like the Ford Ranger in this test) have no b-pillar. The Toyota that was tested, however, was the crew cab. Seems like they should all be tested.
And it is indeed very surprising that the car companies wouldn't spend some money to have the S.A.B. equipped versions crashed. They'd be paying for the truck, but also the better press. Right there they give up something to the competition.

Jul 17th 2008 12:16PM Is it me or does the driver not brake immediately? Did he not notice the moment of inertia the moment the trailer struck the roof? It almost looks like he just kept going after he felt the tug...and it's hard to tell, but I see no brake lights come on.
Ah well, glad they're ok.

Jul 10th 2008 4:54PM Gee I don't know, I mean for a VW the interior looks a little cheap. There's no soft touch plastics or anything...... ;-)

Jul 10th 2008 12:00PM As of this past monday there was an awesome black one sitting on the lot of a local Dodge Dealer in North Jersey. Right in front, for sale - I didn't catch the price. I'm pretty sure it's the only one they have.

Jul 9th 2008 5:02PM That's awesome. Btw at 1:23 you can very easily see the black strings on the right hand side. You can tell they're on strings by the way they sway just a little. Still really impressive though.

Acura TSX named Top Safety Pick by IIHS {Autoblog}
Jun 23rd 2008 5:01PM The comment above about not being a conspiracy theorist and that cars are indeed getting safer is interesting. I do agree with it, but I also agree with the article. I could even go another step further and question the "crash test verification" procedures of IIHS. Those are the tests in which the automakers themselves crash the cars. Hmmmm....

"Test verification
Verification ratings are based on 40 mph frontal offset crash tests conducted by manufacturers for vehicles meeting requirements established by the Institute. Manufacturers supply information on basic vehicle and test parameters, measurements of intrusion into the occupant compartment, injury data recorded on a dummy representing an average-size man in the driver seat, and video of the tests. Institute engineers review this information and rate vehicles based on the same evaluation parameters used for the Institute's frontal offset test. To ensure manufacturers' good faith participation, the Institute is conducting audit tests."
Oh, ok, right.
