Toyota tops big company CAFE ratings for 2007 model year with 29.69 mpg {Autoblog}

Jul 25th 2008 2:00PM Lotus only really produces 1 car, all the models are variants of the single car.

They make a Lotus Elise which has a Toyota 1.8L 190hp 4 cylinder, 6 manual transmission only in a 1980lb package. They also make an Extige which is a Elise with a hardtop and some variants that include superchargers, but Lotus makes nothing over ~230-240hp, no automatics, no sedans, no trucks and absolutely nothing over ~2150lbs so high fuel economy is easy to achieve, considering a BMW 335i weighs 3500+lbs.

Jul 21st 2008 4:34PM On a side note, if Porsche could take the car, put it in a porshe-like body, put a flat4 in it and name it something with a history like the "New 356" or "New 914", it could presumably sell very well.

Jul 21st 2008 4:32PM I'd love to see this in production, one day I'm going to have to replace my MR2 Spyder, but I have my doubts too.

Toyota took a name with a history and many accolades, created an extremely well built and performing car, priced it at 25k, kept the weight at 2150lbs, put in a 138hp motor that had it hit 0-60 in 6.9-7.0 seconds and it was a dismal flop from a sales standpoint.

I'm not sure how Volkswagen plans on making it sell better since it sounds like the exact same concept.

p.s. I really hope Toyota brings back the MR2 someday...

VIDEO: Jay Leno drives the SSC Ultimate Aero, lives {Autoblog}

Jul 15th 2008 3:27PM Any car going to high speeds like this Ultimate Aero will want lots of downforce. At 257mph, downforce is what keeps you stable and on the road and the way to create prodigious amounts of downforce, unfortunately also creates drag. The Veyron had a cd of 0.36-0.41 depending on the active spoiler position, F1 cars have between 0.7 and 1.1 depending on the setup used for different tracks.

Schnell! Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Black Series {Autoblog}

Jul 10th 2008 7:40PM Delete the huge wing and it would look incredible, hopefully there will be an aftermarket to provide mechanized wings for downforce when it's needed. Shame its essential, because it really ruins the lines of the car.

Tesla reveals more details of Roadster powertrain v1.5 {Autoblog}

May 29th 2008 8:31AM @Andrew,

I'll have to say, that is my bad, i read those comments as much more hostile than i think you intended being extremely tired and all at 12:30am. All I'd like to add is Wikipedia does wonders and can answer the basics of almost any question as long as you know how to search for it.

You have to be kidding if you think a small 2-8L gasoline engine is more efficient at extracting power while producing less pollutants.

Yes Coal is out dirtiest energy producer but creating 1KW of power from coal both costs less and creates less pollution than 1KW of power from an internal combustion engine in your car. It's all about economies of scale. As numbers increase and size decreases, efficiency decreases. That's why power plants are centralized and use the largest generators possible without breaking the sound barrier while spinning. Otherwise, we'd all use mini generators in every home to produce our power. It would certainly simplify laying and repairing power lines and distribution.

Try doing some research next time before posting. Keep uneducated comments to Youtube videos

May 28th 2008 4:16PM Because producing 200 miles of electric power on the grid is more economical and less polluting than producing 200 miles of mechanical energy through an internal combustion engine.

Driving 200 miles in a Tesla accounts just a small fraction of the CO2 output from an internal combustion engine that just drove 200 miles if it's from coal, our dirtiest form of power, if that power is from natural gas, nuclear or whatever else, it's even less.
