The Chrysler building hasn't been owned by Chrysler (or anyone named Chrysler) for many years. It's no more a part of Chrysler Group than the Empire State Building.

Jun 9th 2006 12:37PM I dunno', I've written a couple of "Rice Tickets" (popularized by RiceCop.com some years back) to kids with abnormally huge rear wings on their FWD Civics and Jettas... But that's clearly all in good fun.

Trying to shame anyone driving a big ugly box on wheels? Sure, almost every owner of a Hummer H2 is wasting countless gallons of fuel every year by driving him/herself alone to the office every day, and never taking the damn thing off-road... but so what?

I prefer to try and stay within what I think are reasonable parameters for consumption of any resource -- my cars all get upwards of 30 MPG, my mower can do my yard and my nextdoor neighbor's yard on about 4 oz of 87 octane, and I try to reduce and re-use whatever materials I can: Waste not, want not.

While not wanting to preach to anyone the values of living in a reasonably conservationalist manner, I do hope that a few others might pick up on a cue here or there. It all adds up.

May 23rd 2006 1:13PM The lift-off and miraculously-safe landing didn't occur on a practice lap -- it happened during the race itself. If memory serves, Pedro Lamy took it on the wild ride and sailed clear over most of the dirt trap, headed for the tire wall. The car looked as if it might impact the wall ass-first, but luckily landed in the dirt and didn't get too badly torn-up.

May 16th 2006 2:32PM 1977 Pontiac Sunbird. Sky blue with white vinyl interior (*sigh* the 70's, there). 2.5L "Iron Duke" four, 3-sp auto. Bought in 1989 as I was graduating high school, from my nextdoor neighbor. Cost me $500.

A friend down South eventually wrecked his Buick Regal Grand National, but the 3.8L turbo V6 and tranny were still good. After a couple of beer-and-sweat soaked weekends, it was shoe-horned into the Sunbird. Corvettes, watch out! Well, maybe not. The thing was quicker than stink in a straight line, but SCARY in the corners. Real skinny tires (and no money left over for needed improvements, like tires and suspension) so it was quite the hairy ride...

Of course, not knowing jack about turbos at the time, or how to care for them, it cooked in a few months - and the Iron Duke rode back into town, turning my little faded blue wannabe' rod back into... the gayest little car on the block. Again.

Eventually, running with no tags or insurance (hey, at 19 you do some dumb shit), I got tagged on the street by an old man -- and when Officer Friendly found out my car was about as legit as a $3 bill, there went the car. I didn't have the loot to get it out of impound, and didn't have anything in the car I really needed to save, so I just waved goodbye to it and that was that.

The second and third cars had more interesting history on them, but this is a first-car thread... for now.
