Nikon D700 DSLR shows itself in German magazine {Engadget}
Jun 30th 2008 10:00PM >>$4,000??? mid-range my ass ...
Since the camera is €2,600 (includes 19% VAT in Germany) it should actually be around $2,600 or there abouts. The D3 originally sold for around €5,000 in Euroland ($5,000 in the US).
Its actually a stellar deal. Professional 51-point Autofocus from the D3, anti-dust (D3 lacks), 25,600 ISO, and 8fps with MB-D10 vertical grip (9fps in D3).
So pretty much a mini-D3 for almost half the price.
Sony unveils "Life with Playstation" PS3 service {Engadget}
Jun 27th 2008 12:30AM I've rented on both XBL and iTV for HD content, and I would say that it looks good. However, some movies have VERY discernible compression artifacts (such as V for Vendetta). This is especially noticeable in movies with a lot of dark scenes (again, V for Vendetta). The short-comings can be distracting at times but not enough to ruin the watching experience.
Blu-ray looks much much better then the downloaded highly-compressed HD content (which should be obvious being that BD is 1080p and approaches 50GBs), but to many HD downloads may be "good-enough". The problem I've had with HD downloads is that it takes forever to download them, and kinda negates the whole point of getting it "on-demand". If I see a movie I want to watch that night I kinda want to start watching it in "minutes" not "hours". For that reason I usually just go for the SD version because I want it ASAP. Another problem I've had is that the selection thus far is paltry for the online-catalog.
Personally, I think the PS3 will become a stellar piece of entertainment equipment. Digital-distribution + Blu-ray + upscaled-DVDs + Divx/MP4 support + DLNA. Its good to have a choice of how you want to watch; the system is almost agnostic.
Olympus E420 DSLR gets reviewed {Engadget}
Jun 3rd 2008 11:38PM >>To be fair the Leica has superb image quality.
Not so much with the newest digital M8. Leica lenses weren't really designed for the modern digital sensor (like pretty much every modern lens is), and the M8 has been known to have serious IR sensitivity issues. One review has even stated that the similarly compact Canon Rebel XTi outperforms the $5k Leica M8 in image quality.
I'm saying this as someone who owns and shoots Leica, but even their glass is really outclassed by modern Nikon and Canon lenses, and certainly not worth the price. What Leica does have is that it embodies all the technical wonders of the photographic equipment, and the "kiss" sound of the shutter is the bonus, but it does not produce "superb image quality".
Toyota loses patent appeal for technology in Prius {Autoblog}
May 12th 2008 1:32PM There's a big difference between companies that actually develop technologies and companies that patent scam companies like Paice. Basically the company is a run by a bunch of patent lawyers sitting on patents waiting to sue companies, they have no intention of actually using technology.
you can look at their website, which basically just lists patnents they own. Also, proudly

Yep, "The Truth About Cars" is probably the worst blog site around. Vast majority of their crap is just irrational flamebait designed to get hits from suckers linking to them.
New PS3 SKU practically confirmed by GameStop {Engadget}
Feb 1st 2008 1:26PM >>Darn it... i just bought the 80G 3 days ago
If they don't have PS2 backwards-compatibility in the new 120GB, consider your 80GB superior. The 60GB PS3 in many ways is still the best version out there (but each have their unique strengths; the 40GB is quieter for instance). HDD size is a non-issue on the PS3 being that you can upgrade with off the shelf hardrives. You can get a 250GB 2.5" SATA HDD that fits in a PS3 for around a $100 now, and a 120GB for around $60; you can upgrade at your leisure.

Sony A300 and A350 DSLRs with swivel-screen and live view leaked {Engadget}
Jan 28th 2008 6:49PM @Geir E
Great explanation, Sony seems to be tiering their line-up pretty well. Hopefully the A350 will use a CMOS sensor for better lower noise at higher ISOs. Also, the A200 goes up to 3200 ISO, while the A100 did not (neither does the Rebel XSI for that matter).
However, being that the A700 is $1400 now, Sony seems to have a pretty crowded prosumer DSLR market (A200, A300, A350, A700)

Jan 28th 2008 10:20AM >>I don't know which is worse, the fact that he posted the same comment multiple times, or the fact that you actually keep track of it and even bothered to post a link.
I hate to reply to this, being that in the above comment I wanted to point out how annoying irrelevant conversation is on people replying to the first post is. But you can just click the user-name to see all that person's comments (which is the link I posted). For instance, just clicking "Pigfister" brings up all his posts, same goes for yours and mine. If you look at his profile you will see how many times he has posted this on Engadget.
