Apr 17th 2008 10:58AM Please no offense to my statement, but a lot of hasty generalizations are being made in this blog related to the UAW. Greed and corruption is amongst everyone. You cannot point the finger at one particular group; it is fundamental corporate culture and our government fosters it. US companies focus on short term gains vs. developing a sustaining long term profit strategy, as well as a growing relationship with their US employees. Focus of quantity and not quality is another thing that plagues the US car companies, but that is changing (quality is going up) now that more competition is present.
To cut someone's wage and then tell them to live with it is absurd! Think about it (don't be naïve about it either), take a pay cut and live with in your means/bills. The cost of living is increasing while your pay is not.
Not to put any kind of favoritism to the UAW, there are some jobs (in the US Big-3 factories) that are tough. Sometimes the design of the part is not as forgiving to install and/or the install process can not be changed. To say that the UAW sits on their butts while collecting large pay checks is harsh to say, especially when a corporate jacka - - can tank a company and still receive bonuses/raises without any penalties to his/her action. When the manufacturing process of building a vehicle online has not been optimized, people will sit and wait. It is upon the manufacturing and product developments teams to optimize the line so that the operator will have enough time to install the part and have enough time until the next vehicles moves in. For things to really run smooth on the line, design for manufacturing is key (which the Big 3 are inferior to). Also, there are also hidden costs that prohibit the product changes to aid an assembly process. So how can all this be the UAW fault?
The other factor is the outsourcing of jobs outside the US, due to the low cost in labor. This goes back to what I said earlier about US companies developing a sustaining long term profit strategy, as well as a growing relationship with their US employees. China and Mexico can offer lower wage structures and unsafe work environments, but it is only time until their thriving economies grow and the wages increase. I still do not understand how the cost of investing outside the US can be offset by the of cost importation of goods makes sense. In addition, the US Government does not tax the US companies for doing this either, so if anything the government is promoting it.
If anything the UAW tries (I said tries) to force reinvestment into the companies they work for to protect the company and themselves. Ignorance is bliss!
