Rumormill: Leno or Seinfeld could host NBC Top Gear {Autoblog}
Jan 31st 2008 8:58AM Top Gear isn't about knowledgeable hosts. There are plenty of people who know a lot about cars. It's about the chemistry of the hammond/clarkson/may team. Leno's a total car encyclopedia, but I just don't like watching him AT ALL. Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems really unlikely that this show will be able to hold a candle to the UK version.
BMW rolls out 5 millionth 5-Series {Autoblog}
Jan 30th 2008 8:57PM Obviously the older Bimmers were total tanks (e12, e21, e28, e30, e34 on the 3- and 5-series side). My '88 535is (alpine white, lots of circa 1996 bolt on mods) is humming along a-ok on the original motor at 230k miles, give or take 10k (admittedly, the odometer is busted).
I dunno if you can say the same thing about the new ones...they're just sooooo much more complex that I can't imagine keeping them on the road is going to be easy when they're 20 years old. Even an e36 is a nightmare compared to older cars. Troubleshooting the electronics on a circa 2005+ 5- or 6-series is going to be a complete nightmare when all those tiny wires start to fray a couple decades from now. *shudders*

Audi says it will define the "new luxury" {Autoblog}
Jan 27th 2008 11:28AM Audi lags way behind on reliability. BMW has been ranked up with Toyota and Lexus the past few years in terms of # of defects, although they go to the dealerships _a lot_ for non-problems (ie, I can't figure out my iDrive). Mercedes is doing better than they were a couple of years ago, as well.
That's not to say I don't love Audis and VWs (I've had 11 or 12 depending on how you count my 924), but VAG quality control has been problematic for, oh, I dunno...30 years? How do you say "Advancement Through Technology But Have Rhesus Monkeys Do The Assembly" in German?"

Jan 8th 2008 3:32PM That is exactly like going to the zoo and seeing a cheetah pacing back and forth and back and forth wearing a bare patch in the ground. So f-in sad.

Another giant leap for Big Brother: four states to insert RFID chips in driver's licenses {Autoblog}
Dec 28th 2007 10:35AM The magnetic strip on your license is a WHOLE different story. Let's just put out a worst case scenario, shall we? Don your tin foil hat (or wallet):
Big Brother comes up with a list of undesirables. Rabble rousers, thought terrorists, people who have been incarcerated at some point in their lives, etc. Every time you come within 30 feet of an RFID reader, you're being tracked. Corporations agree to help track your movements and start setting up RFID readers at the entrances to malls, gas stations, sporting events, etc. In fact, who knows, maybe the readers already in place at stores can be used for this purpose.
If you're randomly tracked near the same point at the same time that some other undesirable is there, well, all of a sudden you're associated with them in some gigantic database. When they get caught stealing a car or blowing up a building, guess what doors the feds are going to kick in first? Have fun at Gitmo, sucker.
It's a remote possibility, but even six years ago I wouldn't have thought that our privacy would have eroded to the point where it is now. And sure, you can defeat it with tin foil, until some fascist decides to make it against the law to "tamper" with your tracking device and decrees that you have to have it on you at all times.
It may be that no harm comes of this, but I'm 99% sure that no significant good is going to come of it either.
