IIHS releases official results on the smart fortwo {Autoblog}

May 14th 2008 10:03AM CC13,

Funny how Europe didn't want the first generation and the brand almost sunk under the weight of poor performance and handling.

Even this version isn't doing so hot that American sales were needed to justify keeping the brand alive.

Frankly, the mileage sucks, the crash survivability is only "average" for the most part, and the cost versus usability is also low. For the same price you buy four seaters with the same or better crash survivability that get good mileage.

This is a car created by marketers, not engineers.

May 14th 2008 6:44AM So why do these things have to be three wheelers? They will suck in snow. I guess if your a three wheeler you can be a motorcycle and not have to meet stringent car occupant protection rules.

Nissan/Infiniti releases new business plan, confirms G37 convertible {Autoblog}

May 14th 2008 6:20AM I had an 05 6MT G35 coupe and did average 21 or so, got as much as 27 one trip. However the automatics rarely passed 20. Two friends with 05s and autos both average 18. The slushbox just sucks in those cars.

So if you have a 37 version and an automatic I can easily understand the low mileage. I know with the EX that 18 is achievable but not common (friends wife is down near 16 or so with her driving but its mostly town stuff - she smirks her expedition was that good)

Toyota loses patent appeal for technology in Prius {Autoblog}

May 12th 2008 12:19PM Ford licensed 26 patents from Toyota. Toyota is also being sued in Germany over a CVT patent related to Hybrids.

Basically its just that the system is so convoluted and such that your never sure where your safe or if someone isn't sitting on a related patent or submarining one.

What is interesting is how low the fine is. This implies it wasn't done intentionally.

May 12th 2008 11:02AM Hank, you sound like a bad repeat from 10 years ago.

I remember industry people saying the "taurus of today isn't anything like the old, its so much better" etc etc..

IOW - when is it finally going to come true? Five years from now and we will hear it all over again

From the Awesome Files: V6 Miata auto-x weapon {Autoblog}

May 12th 2008 5:51AM Sure, whatever Rich.

Let me guess, you would rather drive the two useless twins from GM? The ones where you can't take a trip with a friend that involves luggage? I guess you could FED-EX your luggage to your destination.

At least the Miata is useful as well as fun to drive. I had one for five years. Compared to other two seater convertibles there isn't better in its price range.

Hyundai/Kia cancels plan for U.S. pickup {Autoblog}

May 9th 2008 9:10AM I figure it this way, the market is pretty well sorted out with only Toyota having made inroads; and that after many years; so Hoonday/Kia probably didn't want pay the piper in a slowing economy.
