Happy Birthday to you, too: Land Rover celebrates 60th anniversary {Autoblog}

May 2nd 2008 9:10AM I think there may actually be a stronger argument for Jeep or (dare I say it) the Toyota Land Cruiser covering more off-road miles over the ages, but that doesn't make Land Rover's 60 years any less worthwhile.

Congrats, LR, and here's to 60 more successful years under the mantle of your new benefactors.

New England Patriots receiver Randy Moss starts NASCAR team {Autoblog}

Apr 30th 2008 4:25PM Wow. That was kind of uncalled for.

If it were Michael Vick starting a NASCAR team, I could almost - almost - see the rationale for that comment. But in reference to Randy Moss, I don't see the point.

Anyway, in regards to the story, I don't see Randy putting much more than his name on this venture for the time being. And in any case, the bigger question will concern who's going to drive for his team - that will determine whether or not this experiment amounts to anything.

Of course, the only name for this creation is...

...the El CaMini. :)

Good news for GM, though.

Dakar looks at alternatives, South America tops list {Autoblog}

Jan 16th 2008 12:05AM Yes, but if we went through life fearing anything that might have a chance at harming us, there wouldn't be anything resembling the dangerous sport that is auto racing.

That said, running a rally-raid through dangerous territory - which the Dakar had done for the last few years despite various threats - is one thing. Having the rally directly threatened, to the point of government intervention, is an entirely different matter. Regardless of tradition, I don't think anyone involved with the rally wanted to get involved in a shooting war.

You'll note that most racing was suspended during World War II as well - kinda hard to run Grand Prix races when half the countries involved are bombing each other. I would also suspect that no one's going to attempt putting together a rally stage for Iraq anytime soon.

Coming to America: VW Polo may come stateside {Autoblog}

Jan 15th 2008 7:34PM Cabrio? Really?

Not a bad idea, but the Mini Cooper cab has enough problems stowing its top - where's VW gonna put it on the tiny little Polo without adding a storage locker to the rear end?

Also, I'd be concerned about the weight increase negating any improvements in mileage over a larger convertible.

Jan 15th 2008 7:31PM Was your Jetta built in Mexico?

Yep, there's the problem. German-built VWs (for the most part) don't seem to have those same longevity issues. Not sure why there's been such a huge difference over the years, but the overall impression of VW=crap over the past decade or so has not helped the company's image.

Jan 15th 2008 7:29PM If it was just the GTI they brought over, the car would be right up against the Mini Cooper.

Which is either good or bad news, depending on how you look at it. Not everyone likes the look of the Mini, so maybe there's room for another car in its segment (of one?) that's not styled like an acid flashback. (I like the Mini, actually, but I'm just saying.)

The aforementioned Corsa is also a good choice - badge it as a Saturn, give us a hot Red Line version, and you might have something.

Jan 15th 2008 7:22PM Good stuff. Keep calling it the Dakar Rally, too - if people from that region complain about the use of the name, it can be calmly explained that the rally can be returned to their country when they manage to extinguish any terrorist threats to the event or its participants.

Consider it a new era in the history of the Dakar - the "Chilean years".
