Officially Official: Opel Insignia revealed {Autoblog}

Apr 18th 2008 3:27AM I'm guess that is because in its home market, VW is probably one of it's biggest competitors.

In Germany in March 2008, Volkswagen sold 9,776 Passats. Opel sold 1,961 Vectra/Signums.
So yes, you could say Volkswagen is an important competitor.
However, the Ford Mondeo is similarly challenged, with 2,249 sales in March.
The volume leaders behind the Passat are Mercedes C-class (8,589), BMW 3-series (7,871), Audi A4 (7,816) and Mazda 6 (2,327). Everything else sells even less units than Opel and Ford.

Perhaps in Europe, Vectra is the same as a Taurus for them?

Pretty much. "Vectra" is European for: Unreliable, ugly, crappy handling midsize car you have to drive if you piss off the person behind the rental counter.
