Volvo continues to take kudos for making the safest cars on European roads, with its diesel-engine V60 plug-in hybrid earning the highest score ever for a PHEV given by Euro NCAP. The Euro NCAP tested the all-new V60 PHEV through a series of crash tests and give it a five star rating; if this were in the US, it would be quite similar to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's crash test rating system. But why take our word for it when you can see a video below.

Since at least May, the plan has been for Volvo to sell the V60 diesel plug-in hybrid before the calendar flips to show 2013. Today, the Swedish automaker announced that the first 1,000 units, all model year 2013 vehicles, have been purchased, and "the order books for next year's cars are already filling up." And the PHEV hasn't even hit showrooms yet. Volvo says it expects to make (and presumably sell) 5,000 V60 PHEVs "as of model year 2014."

Volvo is laying claim to the first production diesel plug-in hybrid title with the company's new V60. The vehicle makes use of a five-cylinder 2.4-liter turbo diesel engine with 215 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque coupled to a six-speed automatic transmission as well as an electric motor good for up to 70 horsepower and 147 pound-feet of torque. The forced-induction internal combustion engine puts power to the front wheels while the electric motor feeds its grunt to the rear. An 11.2-kWh
