I have to imagine Toyota has enough of a fan-base to bring back an identical copy of the AE86 and have a MONSTER hit...Trends happen in spurts, and what is old is new again...In the case of the Mustang, Camaro, Charger, and others, the heritage and styling is what brought back the memories...The eBay scramblers trying to locate an original un-molested hatchiroku would definitely have something to look forward to if this was ever done...If they introduced a Trueno with the original '80s styling and an updated powertrain, no one would have to hunt for an original AE86...Face facts, Toyota hasn't released a powerhouse in many years, their main focus has shifted towards fuel economy and truck development...The old-school fans have given up hope on Toyota, this is their chance to come out with a bang!!...Drifting is popular and 240sx's are really the only option...An inexpensive drift legend should be re-made...I truly believe this concept would work well for any manufacturer...Updated styling suffers, in my opinion, this example has similarities between the late-model Celica and Scion tC...Part of bringing back a classic is bringing back what it stood for: the last rwd econobox, raw performance at a fair price, Toyota reliability...I don't care what kind of preference you have any cars, any one who turns a wrench can vouch for Toyota reliability...If my idea were to become a reality, I would have to buy one myself, and I own an Evolution IX...
You have a good plan but Toyota would never release the AE86 with exactly the same design because it will be against their design philisophy - cost cutting through standardized components across a range of small vehicles.
In order to release the AE86, they would have to bring back the original chassis and frame, which in turn will make the AE86 very expensive. Probably more expensive than a run-of-the-mill Corolla. Business wise, it's mostly enthusiasts who will be looking for such a car, anyone else will still be considering a Yaris or Corolla.
So there you have it, it will be really hard to bring back the AE86 and make it as affordable as any of the other small cars in Toyota's current range.
The gray one looks great but if they are going to bring back the old AE86 why not make one looking a littel bit as the old one. Come on Toyota you can do better. The red one is a Civic with a toyota logo that is not nice, Toyotas AE86 & KE70 are for ever not copies.

I seriously doubt it will be under $13000. Little econo cars are going around $20k easily now.

Author,
I am not sure you have your story right. It will be a 1.8 liter engine
with Subaru AWD system.

if they were making the platform AWD, it would sort of negate that story that they are trying to bring back their only cult car, ever. wouldn't it?

Yeah, cause Supras, Celicas, and MR2s TOTALLY DON'T HAVE A CULT FOLLOWING. AT ALL.
