    We live in a high-tech supercar renaissance, with the Porsche 918 Spyder, McLaren P1 and Ferrari LaFerrari all duking it out for performance supremacy. All three members of this power trio place the engine behind the driver and use some kind of hybrid assist. However, each one finds a slightly different way to make that setup work.     Could there be anything more infuriating than making a million-plus-dollar investment in a vehicle like the McLaren P1, only to take it to a track and find you're unable to outrun a car that costs, without options, about 96,000 pounds ($159,000 at today's rates)?

    With over 900 horsepower on tap from its 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 and electric motor, there was never any question that the McLaren P1 would be quick. Just how quick, we didn't know, but with the first example now in its customer's hands, McLaren Automotive has given up the vital stats on its new hybrid hypercar.

    Acceleration times and top speeds are all well and fine, but there are few bragging rights quite as hotly contested as a Nürburgring lap time. The current king of the hill is the Dodge Viper ACR, which managed to hustle around the Green Hell in 7:12.1. But that looks poised to be de-throned by the new McLaren P1.

    We've heard engine noise from the McLaren P1 before, most recently from its run up the hill at Goodwood, and when McLaren F1 driver Sergio Perez lapped the Top Gear test track. But those sound clips have been from inside the cabin, and while plenty throaty, rather sedate.

    Andrew Freeman is proof that video games will take you places. That's not really news, we suppose, considering the success of Nissan and the GT Academy, which takes talented gamers and turns them into full-blooded racecar drivers. Freeman's case is a bit different, though, as it was more deduction than a blistering lap that got him a seat in a McLaren P1.
