Chevy Cobalt vs. Dodge Caliber (1 of 12)
Let's be honest - neither of these small cars are a threat to segment leaders like the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla. The Cobalt is more of a traditional small car offered in sedan and coupe variants, while the Caliber is a bit quirky with a five-door hatchback layout. Both also offer souped-up versions in the form of the Cobalt SS Turbo and Caliber SRT-4. Which would survive if GM and Chrysler merged? Likely the Cobalt, because Chevy will be replacing it with the more competitive 2011 Cruze, while Chrysler has no known plans for even redesigning the Caliber, let alone replacing it altogether with something better.
WINNER: Chevy Cobalt

The Cobalt platform has proven itself in the Cobalt SS and in the Astra. And the Cobalt's drivetrains are very competitive at their pricepoint. If GM had spend a little more money on styling, interior materials, and suspension tuning in the base Cobalt, they'd have a Civic beater, not just a cheap entry level car with solid bang for the buck.
The Caliber OTOH is just garbage.

Personally I don't see these vehicles are really the same class. The Caliber and it's Jeep friends are mini CUV's. They don't really attract the same customer as a plain Jane Cobalt sedan. Marketed as such with a bit of spit and polish they could do well in an environment where a lot of people are downsizing from big SUV's but would like some utility.
The Cobalt is about to be replaced by the Cruze. Maybe that platform could be used to underpin an updated Caliber. That is the fantasy.
Reality is the idiots running GM will kill both and go with the Cruze. Then they will badge it to death with Chev, Pontiac, Dodge, and possibly Chrysler and Buick all getting their own wantabe versions. With the current bran trust at the helm I wouldn't even rule out a Cadillac Cruze.

Do you own a Caliber? I own a Caliber and trust me i test drove the Cobalt and it was no competition. My Caliber has more room, and more utility.
If you never owned one, you can't call it a piece of sh*t.

If GM and Chrysler do merge, anything that Jeep competes with will be replaced by Jeep. No one else can compete in peoples minds with Jeep. But here is my question: I LOVE the 300. I just love it. Driving it is a dream, and the looks are amazing. Would GM drop it, or keep it going, even though it competes with several GM cars?
