Alfa Romeo's return to North America has been a long time coming, which has given us plenty of time to wonder: Will the now-merged Fiat-Chrysler let Fiat dealers sell Alfas, or will the shapely Italians be available in Maserati dealers? The answer we've been waiting for? Both.

Alfa Romeo has been teasing its return to the United States for years. Each time, it's seemingly been pushed back for one reason or another. The last time we had our Alfa fix fulfilled was when just a few hundred examples of the 8C Competizione crossed the pond late last decade. Now, though, it looks like finally Alfa will be coming back, showing this, the 4C Launch Edition, at the 2014 New York Auto Show.

Alfa Romeo is an exciting brand. You could argue that the MiTo and Giulietta hatchbacks might not speak so much to that effect, but the 4C sure does. Fortunately, Alfa has every intention of keeping the 4C at the forefront of its lineup with a series of upgrades – one to come each year, according to Top Gear.

Typically an automobile will lose some of its more radical design elements on the road from concept to production, but Alfa Romeo has done things a little differently with the 4C... at least, that is, when it came to its headlights.

With the Geneva Motor Show fast approaching, we're receiving news left, right and center of various debuts lined up. And the latest bit of intel suggests that Alfa Romeo has prepared an open-top version of the 4C for debut at the Swiss expo.

Alfa Romeo's gorgeous 4C remains a car that we in the United States are forced to admire from afar. Thankfully, our petrolheaded brethren in the UK and Europe seem all too happy to flaunt the 4C at most every opportunity. We're still not sure if or when we'll get it, but we know how fast it'll get 'round the Nürburgring, we know its headlights can give the trypophobic the heeby-jeebies and we know we like it. During a track day in Italy and thanks to YouTube user Marchettino, we also know what it looks like in white and what its 1.75-liter, four-cylinder exhaust note sounds like when you aim a camera at its rear and have someone lay his foot on the throttle.

The rocky road that is Alfa Romeo's return to the United States has taken yet another twist, as rumors are sprouting that the sleek, new 4C sports car will follow in the footsteps of the 8C Competizione and go on sale at Maserati dealerships. The 8C was sold exclusively at Maserati dealers in the US from 2008 to 2010.

Typically when we report on a car lapping the Nürburgring, the time starts with a seven or even a six – but then again, the car that's achieved those lap times generally sell for six or seven figures. That's what makes this latest lap-time report as interesting as it is. Because while the mid-engined European sportscar in question has clocked in over the eight-minute mark, its price tag – and cylinder count – don't come anywhere near the kind of exotica these reports typic

It appears that Alfa Romeo is banking on the principle of absence leading to fonder hearts when it comes to the 4C, with a report in the Detroit Free Press saying the arrival of the coupe has been pushed back to the second quarter of 2014. No reason was given for the delay.

If you're like us, Alfa Romeo's long-awaited and oft-promised return to the United States will be a joyous event, not least because it'll be heralded by the car you see above - the 4C. Drive's Chris Harris was at the launch in Italy, putting the punchy, lightweight Alfa Romeo through its paces, and doing a bit of sliding around on the Balocco proving grounds.

Operating a Formula One team is no cheap endeavor for an automaker, which could be why Honda, Toyota and BMW all dropped theirs when the going got tough. But not the Fiat Group. With the Scuderia Ferrari under its umbrella, Fiat has access to a cadre of experienced racing and test drivers, and all without spending a penny: Ferrari claims it operates its F1 team without any investment from its parent company. And what's more is that its drivers are some of the best in the world.

Alfa Romeo has priced out its new 4C in Italy, giving us all an admittedly speculative look at what it'll cost when it arrives in the North American market next year. Prices start at 53,000 euros ($71,788 at today's rates), effectively pricing it between the Porsche Cayman, at 55,090 euros ($74,619) and the Lotus Elise S at 51,390 euros ($69,607) in that market, according to Automotive News Europe.

The key to performance in a car like the new Alfa Romeo 4C is its low curb weight. That's why Alfa made its chassis out of carbon fiber, the subframes and engine from aluminum and the bodywork out of composites, helping to keep the whole package down below the 2,000-pound mark. But that magic number will only hold true overseas. In the US, it'll be a good 220 lbs heavier.

Aside from the gorgeous lines of the Alfa Romeo 4C, there was very little information released about the car when it debuted earlier this year at the Geneva Motor Show. With the sleek coupe reportedly already in production and a North American debut planned for the LA Auto Show, details about the mid-engine Alfa have finally been leaked out thanks to some dealer brochures found by AutoEdizione.

Alfa Romeo released most of the details on its new 4C sports coupe a couple of weeks ago, but they only included a few images to paw over. Now we're finally getting to see some more shots of the car, including our first official look at the interior. The glimpse inside the 4C shows us details we did not see in recent spy shots, details like the flat-bottomed steering wheel with paddle shifters, awesome leather-strap door pulls, heavily bolstered sport seats and copious amounts of exposed carbon

When Alfa Romeo makes its triumphant return to the US with the all-new 4C by the end of this year, it appears that some customers could have a hard time getting their hands on one of these sporty little coupes. Automotive News is reporting that not all Fiat dealers will be getting Alfa Romeo franchises, and that allocations of the 4C, at least initially, will be limited to the best-performing dealers.

Just a day after we got our first good look inside the cockpit of the 2014 Alfa Romeo 4C, the slinky coupe that will bring the Alfa brand back to the US, the Italian company has given us a few images and a lot of information about the model. And boy, do we mean "model."
