I think it's gorgeous! Mazda (along with Nissan, Chevrolet, and Saturn) have definitely added a little exterior design flair to the mainstream midsize sedan segment.
As far as the U.S. version's appearance compared to the European/Japanese version: I think it looks just as good if not a little better in some aspects. The rear design is definitely more voluptuous, sculptured, and appealing than the Euro/Japanese version. I think that if Mazda were to inset the fog lights like the Euro/Japanese version, then the front end design would appear a little more narrow and sportier. The only lament that I have with the U.S. version is that the headlight/taillight design doesn't look as upscale as the Euro/Japanese design.
Overall, I think Mazda has a hit on their hands with this new Mazda6. Its design definitely stands out in the mainstream midsize segment.
I agree with Cire - the lines are both hot and original but the front end makes me think more 3 than RX. That's unfortunate in a segment that is moving it's design language more upscale. This is further compounded by the fact that unlike Nissan, Honda and Toyota, Mazda doesn't have a luxury brand and should be aiming a little higher. None the less, I can't wait to see the Mazdaspeed version in black - and how about bringing back the MX coupe?
When it was first known that the North American market would receive a different version than the Euro/Japanese market everyone knew that nothing could touch their version, but I must say that the rear end does have more character than the Euro/Jap. version. I do think the taillights suit the car better, but I do agree that their "interior" design (of the taillights) isn't as intricate/detailed. As for the front end, It isn't quite as good as the Euro version. The brushed aluminum (or whatever it is) around the fog lights looks completely out of place (I find it draws to much attention, whereas in the Euro version, a lot of attention is drawn to the chrome accents in the headlights and the grille). Another bonus is that it looks like it has a very large sun/moonroof. Overall it looks good, but I'll wait till the official revealing to make a final judgement call.

The lights don't really look done, but I do like the RX8 curves... from the back, at least.

I like the look, but miss the wagon. I'll keep mine for a while longer. Sorry no effort at a fuel saver. How unconscious are these people?
