It is built by Opel which is headquartered in Russelsheim, Germany. Could it be that because you thought it was American you automatically discountd it's styling and quality?
As a former 1974 Manta owner, and current Prizm owner, I was hoping for gas mileage in the 35+ range. Cute and sporty, but not very unique. Looks alot like the Opel Kadette from the front, from 20 years ago. You would think after 20 years, they could have come up with something more unique.

It's as boring as everything else. Only the Germans seem to design exciting small cars.
