Review: 2011 Mazda2

Mazda Perfects the Fun-to-Footprint Ratio Bigger used to mean better, but in the modern era, that old chestnut no longer applies. Mobile phones aren't the size of a brick, we can fit 2,000 songs in our pocket and this review was written on a computer that fits neatly on an airplane's tray table. Sometimes smaller is better, and here's a vehicle that proves it. While the 2011 Mazda2 might not be out to redefine the subcompact segment, it does offer something largely lacking from the rest of the pack: fun. But are Mazda's Zoom-Zoom driving dynamics enough to overlook its shortcomings... Read More

Official: Mazda previews hot MX-5 Miata Spyder and Turbo2 concepts for SEMA
    1319815800

Truth be told, we find most SEMA concepts to simply be gaudy aftermarket overkill. These two Mazda models, however – now these are something we'd like to sink our teeth into. Let's start with the MX-5 Miata Spyder concept. The most obvious alteration here is the removal of the stock MX-5's folding soft top (or hard top) for the sake of a stretched ...

Official: Mazda UK's Black edition MX-5 and Mazda2 can be had in any color... as long as it's not black?
    1311717660

You'd expect a car labeled Black Edition to actually be, you know...black. Whether it's a Porsche, a Hummer or a Unimog. But then again Mercedes-AMG's top line of performance models are called the Black Series, and you can get those in any color you want. So maybe it's a page out of that playbook that Mazda has taken with its latest special ...

Mazda and Honda form B-Spec Showroom Stock racing series
    1293217260

Racing is a rich man's sport, no question about it. Sure, there are some ways to get into a bit of wheel-to-wheel that cost less than others, such as the 24 Hours of LeMons, but even that is more expensive than you might think. But regardless of the cost, some people still need to scratch that racing itch. One way to keep costs down is to get into spec ...

SEMA 2010: Puma-hip Mazda2 and its Evil Track twin elicit our want
    1288800060

We got a good look at the two funked-up Mazda2s brought to SEMA by the Zoom-Zoom gang, and at least one of them we sorely need to see on the streets. After happening upon a color and materials designer who worked on this and the Mazda Miata Super20, we asked for the details on the whats and the whys. We were told that the slight gray wundercar with the ...

SEMA 2010: Mazda brings some serious Zoom-Zoom to Las Vegas
    1288738920

Mazda builds plenty of sporty cars that incorporate a fun-to-drive feeling, but calling something a sports car does not automatically equate to a vehicle that is ready for the track. For the 2010 SEMA show, Mazda tweaked a handful of cars to show us just how quickly fun can turn into ferocious. Looking into its stable, Mazda reached in and pulled out a ...

Report: Next Mazda2 could hit 70 mpg and be world's most efficient gas model
    1287752460

The 2011 Mazda2 is a hoot to drive. It's a lithe, driver-focused machine that's entertaining despite its lack of power. This Mazda, like most cars from the automaker, places a priority on the driving experience, but in doing so, falls short in some other categories. The Mazda2 doesn't offer class-leading fuel economy, for example, nor does it boast the ...

Perhaps Mazda was given a chance to play with Mercedes-Benz's nomenclature machine, but the Japanese firm has adjusted the name of its Sky technologies to SkyActiv. These represent the updated components that will appear in Mazda's next generation of cars, and represent six particular advances, from engines to bodyshells. The engines formerly known as ...

Report: Next Mazda2 to be world's most efficient gas vehicle
    1287597660

We're big fans of the 2011 Mazda2, but of all the good things this little hatch has going for it, fuel economy isn't really one of them. Manual transmission models offer 29/35 miles per gallon city/highway, and while that isn't terrible by any means, it's sub-par when you consider the new standard for B- and C-segment cars: 40 mpg. With the ...
