2013 Mazda CX-9 Grand Touring AWD

After spending some time roaming the Hill Country of central Texas with Mazda's new Mazda6 and CX-5 with the 2.5-liter Skyactiv engine, I got a round with the redesigned CX-9 back in Michigan. The three-row Mazda crossover comes to court in the 2013 model year with the same 3.7-liter V6 engine that we've sampled before (still making 273 horsepower and 250 pound-feet of torque), though the nose that wraps it has been updated with the same "Kodo" design language that marks out the CX-5 and friends. I had quite recently spent time in our long-term Nissan Pathfinder, so I felt better... Read More

CX-9 wins again: SEAMO Family Car of the Year

While Autoblog was busy checking out the new Rogue, Grand Caravan, SRT4 and C30, everybody else at the recent South East Automotive Media Organization ride and drive was apparently loving on Mazda's CX-9. Out of a possible 100 points, journalists at the event gave the SUV a score of 91, putting it way ahead of the 32 other vehicles from which to choose.The ...

Mazda CX-9 is Motor Trend's SUOTY

In what must have been a tough decision, Motor Trend has chosen Mazda's 2008 CX-9 as their SUV of the Year. The Associated Press quotes the magazine's editor-in-chief, Angus MacKenzie, as saying the CX-9 is "arguably the most enjoyable sport utility to drive, and a great reminder that SUVs can be as exciting as any car."Motor Trend is expected to make the ...

Mazda dealers: CX-9 sales don't need Zoom-Zoom push

We recently lamented Mazda's decision not to bring their new MPV minivan to the States. Mazda helped explain the decision by saying that minivan marketing practices put too much downward pressure on prices and therefore limit profits for automakers. We think Mazda could reverse that trend by doing what we called for years ago: adding some "Zoom-Zoom" to the ...

Why did Mazda axe the MPV with this in the wings?

Despite the protestation of General Motors and Ford, we believed the Chrysler Group's take on the minivan market's current state given at the Detroit Auto Show. According to the boys and girls from Auburn Hills, the market for Soccer Mom-mobiles will likely hold steady, and they hope to enjoy an even larger piece of the pie with their new Dodge Grand ...

Fingers crossed for second Mazda crossover crossing

With memories of last July's Cougar Ace disaster presumably heavy on their minds, Mazda just shipped out their first batch of new Mazda CX-9 CUVs from Hiroshima to North America. This time the crossing will be aboard the Coral Leader car carrier. It left Hiroshima yesterday for its voyage to California via Tacoma. The ship is expected to reach the U.S. ...

    Mazda CX-9 production begins

Mazda celebrated the production kickoff of its new CX-9 crossover by holding a "line-off" ceremony at the Ujima plant in Japan, where this new product for the North American market is being manufactured. We weren't sure what a "line-off" celebration entailed, but it apparently involves a red carpet, signage bordered with gold Christmas garland, one ...

Mazda partners with Google Earth for CX-7 sweepstakes

Back in January, we were among the first to leak that Mazda was piggybacking on General Motors' "Google Pontiac" campaign to clandestinely swipe some of the latter's advertising buying power. Buying Pontiac AdWords was a brilliantly cost-effective move, though critics derided the practice as deceitful. Well, Mazda is now working up-front and ...

New York Auto Show: Mazda CX-9 - Zoom with a view

While there weren’t any fireworks, models or laser light shows involved with Mazda’s unveiling of the seven-passenger CX-9 in New York today, the sport utility’s sheer size guaranteed a big entrance. Set to go on sale in early 2007, the CX-9 has the largest third-row seat in its class and a lot of room for ingress into the back-back seat. ...
