2013 Chevrolet Volt

Chevrolet has taken an aggressive tack to move units of its revolutionary Volt, selling a fair number to government agencies, offering really fantastic lease deals and marketing the hell out of the car. After a week of driving (and generally enjoying) the 2013 iteration of the extended-range hatchback, I tend to think that customers should just take advantage of the current confluence of market forces rather than bemoaning the larger state of affairs with General Motors as a whole. After all, one of the biggest knocks on the Volt has always been that its MSRP is too high, a fact that la... Read More

December 2013: Not quite time to panic yet
    1389113880

So, the good news in December for green-car advocates as that Nissan Leaf sales continued their gangbuster climb. And Honda picked up some proverbial steam. But that's about it. In all, Americans bought 48,553 hybrids, plug-in hybrids, battery-electrics and diesels last month. US green car sales for December 2013 were 12 percent lower than 2012 ...

Nissan Leaf ends 2013 with best sales month ever, but can't catch Chevy Volt
    1388767500

Nissan and Chevrolet both ended 2013 with solid sales figures for their plug-in vehicles, the first two that were released (all the way back at the end of 2010) from major automakers. As has been the story for most of 2013, December sales for the Nissan Leaf and the Chevy Volt were roughly the same. When we left the year-to-date running tally at the end ...

Report: Bob Lutz says Chevy Volt should've been a truck
    1388530920

Bob Lutz knows a thing or two about the Chevy Volt. He was, after all, GM's vice chairman in charge of product development during the Volt's gestation process, widely credited with ushering it into production. But now he says it should have been a truck, not a sedan. Speaking with The Seattle Times, Lutz said General Motors was playing catch-up with the ...

Plug-in electric vehicle drivers can potentially drive their EVs long distances under extreme weather conditions. The catch is that they have to drastically change their driver behavior. Over the past year, FleetCarma has been collecting data from 7,375 Nissan Leaf trips and 4,043 Chevrolet Volt trips. The best that a Leaf driver was able to get was 106 ...

Chevy Volt, Nissan Leaf continue neck-and-neck sales race in November
    1386097320

November car sales numbers are trickling in today, and we have basically the same news to report about sales of the two longest-running plug-in vehicles this month as we did last month: people are buying the Nissan Leaf and the Chevy Volt at roughly the same rate. For November, the Leaf managed to come out on top with 2,003 units sold. That compares to ...

The majority of consumers are more or less priced out of the market. Electric cars are gaining popularity with the general public, but are they still too expensive? According to a survey 1,084 consumers by Navigant Research, a consulting firm located in Boulder, CO, 71 percent want their next car to cost under $25,000, while 41 percent won't go a cent ...

    1385328000

When it comes to the country's two most popular plug-in vehicles, a premium-gas-powered security blanket can make the difference of about four all-electric miles a day. That's the crux of the US Department of Energy's EV Project Vehicle Summary Report for the second quarter of 2013 on how drivers use the Chevy Volt (PDF) and Nissan Leaf (PDF). In a ...

Anyone hoping September's flatlining of US green-car sales was an aberration will be disappointed. October's numbers are in and they're not much better. With gas prices working their way down from their summertime highs, Americans continued to show tempered enthusiasm for hybrids, plug-ins and diesels, as October green-car sales rose just 4.3 percent from ...

The sales story of the two longest-running plug-in vehicles in the US is reaching an equilibrium for 2013. We've mentioned the past few months that the running annual totals for the Nissan Leaf and the Chevy Volt were nearly identical. The change means that, overall, a drop in 2013 sales doesn't really represent a decline in sales, since there were fewer official sales days and no Labor Day sales in September 2013.
