2013 Chevrolet Volt
Chevrolet has taken an aggressive tack to move units of its revolutionary Volt, selling a fair number to government agencies, offering really fantastic lease deals and marketing the hell out of the car. After a week of driving (and generally enjoying) the 2013 iteration of the extended-range hatchback, I tend to think that customers should just take advantage of the current confluence of market forces rather than bemoaning the larger state of affairs with General Motors as a whole. After all, one of the biggest knocks on the Volt has always been that its MSRP is too high, a fact that ... Read More

0Chevy Volt, Cadillac ELR could get downsized three-cylinder range extender 1363644360
Three may be the magic number for General Motors and its effort to cut both fuel use and weight in its next-generation extended-range plug-ins, both the new Chevrolet Volt and Cadillac ELR. GM, along with its China-based vehicle-development partners, may build a three-cylinder gas-powered range extender for the two plug-ins, Edmunds says, citing industry ...

GM VC not happy with Europe's response to plug-in vehicles 1363384200
General Motors Vice Chairman Steve Girsky has had it up to his eyeballs with Europe. It's one thing to attempt to bail out GM's Opel subsidiary in the beleaguered European auto market. It's another to market the Opel Ampera plug-in hybrid to such tepid response. "All the governments in Europe said, 'We want EVs, we want EVs.' We show up with one, and ...

Q&A: Larry Nitz says GM "committed to electrification as a long-term journey" 1363044600
Anyone who still doesn't believe that General Motors is serious about advanced technology in general, and vehicle electrification in particular, hasn't yet learned that post-bankruptcy GM is a very different company run by different people with a different set of priorities, most of which we would all applaud. One clear sign of this was the company's ...

Chevy Volt's UK doppelgänger to be tested as an ambulance 1362783900
We still can't figure out where those wacky British will fit the gurney, but we'll let that go as we report that the UK version of the Chevrolet Volt will be tested as an ambulance across the pond. A Vauxhall Ampera, which, along with the Volt extended-range plug-in, was named the 2012 European Car of the Year last March, will be added to the Yorkshire ...

GM CEO Akerson confirms 200-mile EV in the works, says death of the V8 "greatly exaggerated" 1362700920
General Motors isn't talking about how far the 2014 Chevrolet Spark EV can go before it needs a charge, but par for the course for today's electric vehicles i2 around 70-100 miles. GM CEO Dan Akerson today confirmed that the company is working on a 200-mile EV (perhaps a Spark, perhaps not) during a speech at the IHS Ceraweek conference in Houston. ...

February 2013 Leaf vs. Volt sales flash report: bouncing up, slightly, edition 1362160500
The plug-in vehicle field is getting more and more crowded, but the two long-timers remain barometers for how electric vehicles are being accepted in the US. Last month, the Chevrolet Volt was up and the Nissan Leaf held steady. Let's get to the numbers. The Volt continued to bounce up and down, with February's numbers – 1,626 sales – on the ...

GM planning on 20% increase in plug-in hybrid production in 2013 1362009780
Before the Chevrolet Volt launched in late 2010, General Motors representatives were boldly talking about some big production numbers, like 60,000 or 45,000 Volts a year. It's been a rocky road since then, and the reality was more subdued. The General sold 7,671 Volts in 2011 and 23,461 in 2012. When you add in the rebadged Opel Ampera, GM made and sold ...

Remember the story last fall about workers at battery maker LG Chem's Holland, MI-based plant who were sitting idle? Well, the feds have investigated and the news isn't good. The US Department of Energy (DOE) released an audit earlier this month (PDF) that revealed that not a single production lithium-ion battery has been built at the plant and employees ...

Cadillac engineers recently completed chassis testing on pre-production ELR models, evaluating the car's handling in winter weather conditions. GM's goal is to ...

Video: C7 Corvette makes inaugural ad appearance in Chevy's first spot with new slogan 1360604700
Chevrolet's "Runs Deep" tagline has finally been run into the ground, replaced with the Bowtie brand's "Find New Roads" slogan that's part of parent General Motors' plan to unify its everyday brand's marketing efforts worldwide. The new Chevrolet campaign was ushered in on prime time last night during the Grammy Awards on CBS, and the first spot, a ...
