McLaren is rolling out special editions of the company's MP4-12C Coupe and Spyder supercars to commemorate its 50th anniversary. Produced by McLaren Special Operations, the cars will feature a new front fascia with additional downforce as well as carbon-fiber trimmed air inlets. Engineers also shed a few pounds from the machine by crafting the floorboard in carbon Kevlar. Each anniversary edition comes with carbon ceramic brakes as standard equipment as well as a set of bespoke, ultralight 19-inch wheels painted Satin Black. McLaren says the rollers are a full 4.4 pounds lighter than the stock wheels, combined.

Inside, buyers will find a full leather interior, and the anniversary editions will only be available in one of three colors. Those with the cash can choose between Carbon Black, Supernova Silver or McLaren Orange. We'll have ours in the latter, please. McLaren will kindly ask for $295,254 for the coupe and $325,836 for the Spyder at current conversion rates. Take a look at the press release below for more information.
Continue reading McLaren announces anniversary edition MP4-12C Coupe and Spyder specials

McLaren announces anniversary edition MP4-12C Coupe and Spyder specials originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 24 May 2013 10:00:00 EST.
We know the McLaren P1 is pretty much ready to fly into lucky US owners' underground bunkers by the latter part of fall 2013. We should get a go at an early production version by late June, we are told, and as you would imagine, we can't wait. The running number on the price for the United States remains pegged at $1.15 million.

The main facts remain the same: The P1 runs off a twin-power hybrid powerplant good for a combined 903 horsepower and 663 pound-feet of torque. Thrusting thrills are provided by both the push-button operated Drag Reduction System (or DRS), chopping drag by 23 percent by flattening the rear wing, and by the push-button operated Instant Power Assist System (IPAS) feeding instantaneous added electric-motor oomph through the gearbox straight to the drivetrain. The slingshot from 0 to 186 miles per hour (i.e. 300 kilometers per hour) happens in less than 17 seconds.

Shivers. While at the Geneva Motor Show where the P1 showed itself in full production trim and in screaming picture-hogging yellow, we chatted about further details with the P1's chief of engineering design, Dan Parry-Williams. To all the specification fodder we already have on the P1, Parry-Williams added some chum.
Continue reading McLaren P1 guru spills more info on his hypercar

McLaren P1 guru spills more info on his hypercar originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 22 May 2013 11:04:00 EST.

Those of you who were following along with the live Xbox One keynote this afternoon have likely already seen this video, but for the rest of the world, this is the first look at the all-new Forza Motorsport 5. Slated to be a launch title for the new Xbox gaming console, Forza 5 is tipped to offer racing like no other video game before it, with controls and graphical presentation on a new level.

The demo seen here shows that, to no one's surprise, the McLaren P1 will have a star turn in the next-generation game. The video shows both the P1 and its F1 forefather in a race through narrow city streets, with both cars rendered in eye-popping detail. Actual game play footage will ultimately have to win us over, but it's safe to say that all signs point to a killer racing sim. Check out the video for yourself below.
Continue reading The first Forza Motorsport 5 trailer is here

The first Forza Motorsport 5 trailer is here originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 21 May 2013 20:00:00 EST.

Filed under: Coupe, Performance, Honda, McLaren

As one of the premier sports cars in the world, the Porsche 911 is always driving around with a target on its rear-engined backside. If a new report is to be believed, the latest automaker with plans to build a 911-fighting sports coupe could be McLaren. Motor Trend is reporting that the recent news that Honda and McLaren are teaming up to build Formula One racecars could bear road-going fruit as well.

According to the article, the unnamed entry-level McLaren coupe may be powered by a Honda-sourced engine, but a detuned version of the 3.8-liter V8 from the MP4-12C is said to be more likely. All in, though, there is no solid information on the car just yet. As a reminder, M/T points out that the last time McLaren partnered up with a mainstream automaker, the world was introduced to the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren.
McLaren pondering Honda-powered 911 killer? originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 21 May 2013 16:02:00 EST.
A host of carbon fiber parts designed and made in Germany are what turn the McLaren MP4-12C Spider into the Gemballa GT Spider. The 625-horsepower, twin-turbo V8 is untouched, almost everything else is heavily touched. There's the body kit that includes new front and rear bumpers, side skirts, new tailpipes and logos. Swing up the doors and you'll find a reskinned interior in leather and Alcantara in your choice of color, plus color-matched gauges. That will run you 19,980 euro ($25,647 US) including paint and installation, but it can alternatively be shipped internationally if you'd like to have your own people install it.

The GForged-one wheels are an inch larger than the standard units, at 20 inches up front and 21 inches in back, but don't change the weight of the car. There are two styles and two finishes available, and shod in Michelin Pilot Super Sport rubber they'll require 7,980 euro ($10,243) of your hard earned. Throw down a little more and you can have the brake calipers painted, too.

If this number whispers seductive German nothings in your ear, check out the press release below and the high-res gallery above.
Continue reading McLaren 12C Spider worked over by Gemballa

McLaren 12C Spider worked over by Gemballa originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 21 May 2013 07:59:00 EST.

Now that McLaren is a proper automaker, it's automatic that auto journalists will inquire about future product. That's how we've come to learn that the McLaren P1 will have a successor - but not until a decade from now.

Attempting to answer the question left by the mission statement of the P1, which is that it "will maintain its status as the best super sports car the world has ever seen until a successor is built," Autocar inquired about the supercar's following act. The company's head of sales and marketing explained that not only will it be a "decade or so" before the next flagship arrives, but we can expect a "short product cycle" for the P1 because "you have to step back from the market for a few years." We take that to mean there'll be a gap when no transcendent flagship is on sale, the same way we waited nine years for the Ferrari LaFerrari to succeed the Enzo.

The McLaren F1 didn't fulfill its sales ambitions but did become a legend. The clock has just started on the McLaren P1, but with "30 or so" cars in the order books it should avoid the former fate, and before we get to thinking about a successor, perhaps we can first see how the P1 fares against the competition and its own heritage.
McLaren already pondering P1 successor originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 19 May 2013 05:21:00 EST. Honda must really love Formula One racing, as evidenced by today's announcement that the Japanese automaker is returning to the world's most popular motorsport for the fifth time in its history. Honda has entered into a team partnership with McLaren to develop and manufacture power systems - the engine and energy recovery system - for the 2015 F1 season. McLaren will be in charge of chassis development and running the day-to-day operations of this newly formed team, which will be called McLaren Honda.

Honda says its decision to reenter F1 racing had to do with new regulations for the 2014 season that require cars to be powered by a 1.6-liter direct-injection turbocharged V6 engine paired with an energy recovery system. Apparently the chance to develop this particular powertrain for F1 racing was too enticing for Honda to pass up, which suggests it has bigger plans for the knowledge learned while developing these systems beyond just winning races.

As mentioned, this is Honda's fifth foray into F1 racing, the first being back in 1964 when it participated as its own team through 1968. Its longest stint came from 1983-1992 as an engine supplier, during which time it partnered with many teams, including McLaren, and won six Constructor Championships. Honda then returned from 2000-2005 as an engine supplier for British American Racing (BAR) before buying that team outright and running it as Honda Racing from 2006-2008. Then the global economic crisis hit. Honda's return to the sport will surely be welcomed by fans as its partnership with McLaren should produce a formidable team. It's a strong signal that the company has returned to health after a few tumultuous years, and hopefully its rediscovered motorsports mojo will help yield more passionately engineered street cars.
Continue reading Honda returning to F1 as McLaren partner

Honda returning to F1 as McLaren partner originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 16 May 2013 09:57:00 EST.
This year's Formula One season might qualify as being just as crazy as last year's, only it's a different kind of crazy. Instead of a new winner every Sunday, how the winner actually manages to take the victory is the mystery, and just when we thought the season might have settled into a groove regarding team performance, here comes the Spanish Grand Prix to remind us that we don't know anything until the race has been run.

There were many similarities to past weekends to being this one: Mercedes-AMG Petronas showed awesome one-lap pace, Fernando Alonso did well enough in qualifying to get fifth on the grid but talked up the race pace of the Ferrari, Kimi Räikkönen was the equivalent of a racing photobomber, never saying much but always showing up in the picture, Felipe Massa wasn't really big on the tires and McLaren might want to consider starting a blues band they spend so much time singing them.

Then the lights went green and things went nuts...
Continue reading Recap: 2013 Spanish Grand Prix is Catalan for 'Lottery' and 'More pit stops'

Recap: 2013 Spanish Grand Prix is Catalan for 'Lottery' and 'More pit stops' originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 14 May 2013 09:27:00 EST.

Filed under: Coupe, Performance, Etc., Design/Style, Luxury, McLaren

Could this be a first? Normally we wait in anticipation of the camouflage to be taken off prototype cars, but Greenwich Patch is reporting that Miller Motorcars in Greenwich, CT has taken a production car back to its prototype days. The McLaren MP4-12C above was painted gray, but you'd never know it because the sheetmetal has been covered by a vinyl wrap decorated with the same camouflage pattern McLaren uses for its pre-production prototypes. It was designed by McLaren - for proof, check out this P1 in winter testing - and took three days to apply. The shapes are those of race tracks around the world.

The dealership calls it the MP4-12C Greenwich Special Edition. It's a pre-owned car and we're not sure whether the wrap was applied as new or to help the coupe find a new home, but we'd like to buy a pint for the person that thought it up. If you like the style but not the $259,035 price, you can probably design one for your own car with countless hours and Adobe Illustrator. Or, you can simply get a closer look at this one from every angle, in the high-res gallery above.
McLaren dealership creates special MP4-12C Greenwich Edition originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 06 May 2013 10:01:00 EST.

Filed under: Classics, Coupe, Hybrid, Performance, Videos, McLaren

Even though McLaren will only be building 375 examples of its new P1 hybrid supercar, it has to make sure the high-performance coupes are ready for just about any weather conditions. For its cold-weather testing, McLaren headed to the Arctic Circle to put the P1 through its paces, which also provided a perfect opportunity for some good photos and video. We've seen the P1 in person now in full production trim, but this artfully camouflaged prototype proves that the 903-horsepower supercar looks good in just about any color.
Incidentally, McLaren has also announced that as a part of its 50th anniversary celebration, the new P1 will be a featured car at the Goodwood Festival of Speed this July, along with some of the firm's vintage Can-Am racers.
In attempt to visualize the claim that the McLaren P1 is, "The most aerodynamically advanced car in the world," the Woking, UK firm has put out a video called Designed by Air to show how the stuff we breathe interacts with the supercar.

The video isn't the complete story, it's just a teaser for an interactive experience that will be released next month. The full story will go into how the raw materials in the P1 were designed into the final shapes by the airflow around them. You can watch it below, but we'll warn you, it probably won't make much sense until McLaren reveals the rest of the story next month.
Continue reading See how the McLaren P1 was 'Designed by Air'

See how the McLaren P1 was 'Designed by Air' originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 22 Apr 2013 12:44:00 EST.
Formula One fans and commentators have spent the three weeks since the Malaysian Grand Prix discussing two things more than any other: that pass, and tires. Sebastian Vettel spent days giving his tongue an Olympic workout on the verbal gymnastics parallel bars before finally admitting he passed his Infiniti Red Bull teammate Mark Webber on purpose partly for reasons of payback, partly out of a desire to win - he doesn't apologize for it and he would do it again.

Then came those Pirellis - every single driver and team representative interview touches on how important it is to understand the tires and manage their degradation. Two races in, though, it seems no team has any clue yet how to make the race-weekend compounds work predictably. The only thing predictable about the soft compound tires that Pirelli brought to China was that they would last for six laps, and that led to an odd qualifying session with drivers reluctant to leave the pits or even set a time.

It also led to the first pole position for an Englishman in a Mercedes-Benz since Stirling Moss did it in 1955.
Continue reading Race Recap: 2013 Chinese Grand Prix a test of tires, carnage and a fight for second [spoilers]

Race Recap: 2013 Chinese Grand Prix a test of tires, carnage and a fight for second [spoilers] originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 15 Apr 2013 14:00:00 EST.
We have to thank the boys and girls from Car and Driver for this video. According to the description on YouTube, this footage was filmed somewhere in Utah, and after watching all 28 minutes we're thankful that there's nothing getting in the way of the beautiful landscape, awe-inspiring sunset and aural pleasure of the supercar. And we're also thankful for the demonstration of the McLaren MP4-12C and its active aerodynamics...

As you're surely aware, there's seemingly no end to well-shot automotive video on the Internet, with affable hosts, intriguing camera angles and even stunning special effects. But there seems to be a distinct lack of good, clean raw footage such as what was captured by Car and Driver in the video you'll see below, which makes us sad. Help cheer us all up by scrolling down below and reveling in the high-definition beauty that unfolds.
Continue reading McLaren MP4-12C flies through Utah backcountry with camera in tow

McLaren MP4-12C flies through Utah backcountry with camera in tow originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 03 Apr 2013 14:59:00 EST.
What if you could use the McLaren MP4-12C Spider as a lift chair to the top of Loveland Pass in Colorado, 11,900 feet above salty sea level? And what if you had Rhys Millen to drive that lift chair and your job was to race him back down? Complaints? Anyone? Bueller?

That was the setup for snowboarder Chanelle Sladics when McLaren wanted to hit a high note while showcasing the 12C Spider before it's North American sales debut and its Winter driving mode to help drivers drift - or perhaps just drive - in sketchy conditions.

Think that the new McLaren P1 supercar seems pretty tremendous after following its launch in Geneva this year? We do, too. And now, after seeing the reaction the ultra-performance Mac has gotten from McLaren Formula One driver Checo (Sergio) Perez, we're even more excited for our chance at some seat time.

In this new video, Perez takes a few hot laps of the famous Top Gear test track at the Dunsfold Aerodrome in England. (Let the new Stig rumors commence.) The P1 in the film manages to look pretty lovely, even in full-body camouflage and, more importantly, draws some rave reviews from a driver that knows from quick cars. Follow on below for the full video.
Continue reading McLaren P1 goes around Top Gear test track

McLaren P1 goes around Top Gear test track originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 19 Mar 2013 12:33:00 EST.
This year's Geneva Motor Show served as the launch platform for three of the world's latest and greatest supercars. The Italians brought us the Lamborghini Veneno and the Ferrari LaFerrari, while the British unveiled the production version of the McLaren P1.

To put the three in better perspective - as if any of us will ever fully comprehend trio of million dollar coupes - the Aussies at Motoring.com.au built an infographic (click above to enlarge) that outlines what makes each of these cars so spectacular. Using unique colors to represent each of the vehicles, the team put together a variety of charts that focus on vital statistics, pricing, total production run and other parameters all designed to ease the process of digesting an overabundance of exotic goodness. We have uploaded the graphic full size in this link.
Infographic: Comparing the Veneno, LaFerrari and P1 supercars originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 16 Mar 2013 14:59:00 EST.
We've returned from a very busy week in Switzerland, and in going back over all of our 75 stories from the Geneva Motor Show, our editors have gathered up their personal favorite debuts from the European expo.

The wonderful thing about the Geneva show is just how wide of an array of vehicles are on display - everything from funny little one-off EVs to the most exotic of supercars to, well, truly ridiculous displays of coachbuilding. And because of that, this list of our editors' favorites might not be as predictable as you think.

But we don't want to give anything away just yet. Scroll down to have a look at our team's favorites from Geneva.
Continue reading Editors' Choice: Top Five 2013 Geneva Motor Show Debuts

Editors' Choice: Top Five 2013 Geneva Motor Show Debuts originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 08 Mar 2013 11:57:00 EST.
The McLaren F1 is 20-year-old exotic that was the most expensive production car in the world when it went on sale for 540,000 pounds. That's about $810,000 US at current rates; in 1995, however, while the pound-to-dollar exchange rate was about the same as today, the automotive world hadn't got used to there being a new million-dollar car announced or launched every quarter.

McLaren brought the production prototype of the F1 LM to the Geneva Motor Show to offer another look at what was. This was tester for the production version of the Le Mans-winning F1 GTR, of which five would be built. It carried over the race car's aero accoutrements like the wing and extra venting but shed the restrictor, making 680 horsepower from the 6.1-liter BMW V12 - the standard F1 made 627 hp.

Twenty years is a long time to be put on a pedestal, but the innovation and the results prove it still belongs there. We'll find out this year if the P1 has the right to join it.
McLaren F1 LM proves the P1 has the best genes originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 07 Mar 2013 10:27:00 EST.
We know, we know - we've seen this car before. But now it's yellow. And we have performance data. And we can see the interior. And most importantly, it's no longer a concept. Did we mention it's pretty? Yeah.

Feast your eyes on the P1 - McLaren's new flagship supercar that's ready to storm the United States, as well as the rest of the world. Under its hood is a twin-power hybrid powerplant, which uses both a twin-turbo 3.8-liter V8 and an electric motor to crank out a total of 903(!) horsepower and 663 pound-feet of torque. What does that mean? Hitting 62 miles per hour will take "less than three seconds" and shooting up to 124 mph will take "under seven seconds." The most impressive thing, however, is that hitting 186 mph will take "no more than 17 seconds," which shaves 11 seconds off the time originally set by the famed McLaren F1. In other words, this thing is hella quick.

Now's your chance to have a look at the production P1 in our brand-spanking-new high-res image gallery. And if you like what you see, just remember, salvation is only $1.15 million away.
McLaren P1 proves yellow doesn't have to be mellow originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 05 Mar 2013 05:00:00 EST.
McLaren took the wraps off its upcoming P1 supercar nearly five months ago at the Paris Motor Show, but the automaker refused to release details about its interior, powerplant or performance - those juicy details would all have to wait.

Yet after a private showing in New York, followed by another exclusive event in Beverly Hills, McLaren began to slowly trickle out information about the P1's instrument cluster and passenger cabin, before finally disclosing its 903 horsepower hybrid powerplant earlier this month.

Finally, after much speculation, McLaren has revealed the last piece of the puzzle and announced its tested performance figures. The 100 km/h benchmark (62 mph) falls in "less than three seconds" while the 200 km/h barrier (124 mph) is shattered in "under seven seconds." Lastly, the rear-wheel drive P1 will hit 300 km/h (186 mph) in "no more than 17 seconds" (an impressive 11 seconds faster than its legendary McLaren F1). Those blistering numbers put the P1 among a very small and elite group, with members like Bugatti, Koenigsegg and Hennessey - the fastest road cars on the planet.

If you are wondering how much it costs to embarrass a Ferrari, McLaren also broke its pricing embargo today. Base price, in the United States, is a cool $1,150,000.
Continue reading McLaren releases astonishing P1 performance figures

McLaren releases astonishing P1 performance figures originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 26 Feb 2013 04:00:00 EST.
