Toyota Racing Development (TRD) in Japan has designed cosmetic and performance bits that give the 2014 <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/lexus/is/">Lexus IS</a> a front-to-back workover. Different from the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/f-sport/">F-Sport</a> parts we expect from <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/lexus/">Lexus </a>here, the full body kit runs 437,700 yen ($4,285 US) and starts with air deflectors at the lower edges of the front bumper, through to side skirts, a decklid spoiler and a rear bumper with a diffuser and quad exhaust tips.<br />

For 288,750 yen ($2,830) you can sharpen responses with new shocks, springs, dampers, sway bar and bracing. The priciest individual component is the set of 19-inch wheels, four of them going for 527,625 yen (5,170 US). What do you do if you have enough money to buy a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/lexus/lfa/">Lexus LFA</a> but can't get the car safely to your house? Get local government involved, of course. Rune Berge Vik, of Stavanger, Norway, did just that after he bought a Lexus LFA (the only LFA in the Nordic region <a href="http://www.tv2.no/underholdning/broom/paa-tv/lexus-lfa-rune-kjoepte-droemmebil-til-43-millioner-usett-4029616.html">according to <em>tv2.no</em></a>) last year only to find out that it could not clear a speed bump in his neighborhood.<br />
<br />
To remedy the situation, Vik got in touch with his city, which had the speed bump removed. Talk about your tax dollars hard at work. On the other hand, it's commendable that the man actually uses his supercar as a daily driver, and besides, doesn't a street-legal car have the right to access said public streets? <br />

    <title><![CDATA[2013 Lexus LS 600h L]]></title>

And after roughly 500 miles of errand-running, highway-cruising, commuting and people-schlepping, I can safely say this: I don't get it.<br /> <br /> The LS hybrid is a nice car. It's comfortable, has every amenity you'd ever want in a luxury boat, and with its freshened appearance for 2013, it looks modern, integrating the company's new spindle grille into an overall package that's elegant. None of this is bad news. But let me explain why I still cannot wrap my head around the overall LS 600h L package:<br /> <br />  <strong>Driving Notes</strong>  <ul>  <li>For starters, the LS hybrid mates a 5.0-liter naturally aspirated V8 to a 165-kilowatt electric motor. The gasoline engine on its own is good for 389 horsepower and 385 pound-feet of torque, and with the electric motor factored in, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/lexus/">Lexus</a> states that the total system output is a robust 438 hp. (All of that, by the way, resides in what editor Zach Bowman refers to as the "<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2013-lexus-ls-600h-l-quick-spin/#photo-5874940">world's saddest engine bay</a>.")</li>  <li>That makes for one quick sedan, even here with all-wheel drive and a hefty 5,159-pound curb weight. Hitting 60 miles per hour takes 5.5 seconds, and top speed is limited to 130 mph.</li>  <li>Hybrid or no, as you'd expect with a package like this, fuel economy isn't exactly stellar. The EPA rates the LS 600h L at 19/23/20 miles per gallon (city/highway/combined). My average over the week was 19.2 mpg.</li>  <li>For comparison, let me introduce you to the non-hybrid LS 460 L AWD, powered by a 4.6-liter V8 that makes 360 hp and 347 lb-ft of torque. Compared to the 600h, the 460 is slower to 60 mph by 0.4 seconds and its fuel economy numbers are 16/23/18 mpg. That's right: The highway economy number is the same as the hybrid, and the combined rating is only reduced by two mpg.</li>  <li>Lexus does call the LS 600h L a performance hybrid, so rather than it being a more efficient version of the flagship sedan - sort of the way a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/mercedes-benz/s-class/">Mercedes-Benz S400 Hybrid</a> is really just a more frugal S550 - this electrified LS is supposed to be the zenith of the line, offering the most power, quickest acceleration, and top-level refinement.</li>  <li>Thing is, it's not all that good to drive. Even with the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2013-lexus-ls-600h-l-quick-spin/#photo-5874949">Drive Mode Select button</a> toggled to Sport S+, the LS 600h L delivers driving dynamics that are far closer to that of a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/hyundai/equus/">Hyundai Equus</a> than an <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/audi/a8/">Audi A8</a> or <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/bmw/7+series/">BMW 7 Series</a>. It's a giant rolling couch, with vague steering, plenty of body roll, and a suspension that, even in its firmest setting, doesn't offer a whole lot of sport. Comfy and plush, yes, but hardly engaging.</li>  <li><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2013-lexus-ls-600h-l-quick-spin/#photo-5874943">The interior</a> is really where the LS excels, yet lags. It has every comfort and convenience feature you can imagine, the materials are top notch, and it's, well, Lexus quiet. But from a user standpoint, there are issues. I know that Audi's MMI, BMW's iDrive and Mercedes-Benz's COMAND aren't always peachy systems to use, but they at least offer more user-friendly controllers than the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2013-lexus-ls-600h-l-quick-spin/#photo-5874950">horrible mouse-like Remote Touch controller</a> in the LS. Several passengers commented on this during my week with the car, each one of them failing to understand the point. Perhaps Lexus could bring that <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2013-lexus-ls-600h-l-quick-spin/#photo-5874947">12.3-inch screen</a> out a little more and just make it a proper touchscreen interface.</li>  <li>But here's where it totally falls apart: as-tested, the LS 600h L I drove stickered for $135,029, including $895 for destination and handling. Remember that LS 460 L AWD I mentioned earlier? The one that's not much slower and, in most cases, just as efficient as the hybrid? Option it up to the exact same levels of equipment as this 600h and it's still $34,749 cheaper. That's right, nearly <em>thirty-five thousand dollars less</em>.</li>  <li>Or hey, check out the BMW 750Li xDrive sedan. It has 445 horsepower, gets 24 mpg highway, and completely loaded, is $20,000 less than the LS 600h L. And if efficiency really is your thing, allow me to introduce you to the Audi A8L 3.0 TDI that claims up to 36 mpg highway. <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2013/01/31/audi-prices-2014-a8l-tdi-from-82-500/">It starts at $82,500</a>.</li>  <li>What we have here is car that is, in a vacuum, fine. Everything that it does, it does well enough. But not for this price. And certainly not when there are so many more attractive options for buyers in the segment. <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/lexus/">Lexus</a> has announced pricing for its <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/lexus/is/">2014 IS Sedan</a>. Buyers will be able to take home the reworked luxury four door beginning at $35,950, the MSRP for the IS250 in rear-wheel drive configuration (excluding $895 destination fee). Stepping up to all-wheel drive will see that number jump to $38,485, and both variants get their grunt from a 204-horsepower, 2.5-liter V6. Going for the IS350 with its 306-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 will cost your $39,465, and adding all-wheel drive to that equation will see the bottom line jump to $41,700. As Lexus points out, the 2014 IS350 is 2.1 percent cheaper than the 2013 model.<br />
<br />
Each model comes standard with HID headlamps, LED daytime running lamps, dual zone climate control and other goodies, and buyers can option up their sleds with Premium, Luxury and F Sport trim packages (above). The latter F-Sport guise adds a new mesh grille, revised front fascia, unique seats and sport suspension. <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/lexus/">Lexus</a> may have had another big reason - in addition to the financial incentives <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2013/04/18/toyota-offered-146-5-million-to-build-lexus-es-in-kentucky/">potentially worth up to $146.5 million</a> that Kentucky offered - to <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2013/04/19/lexus-es350-confirmed-for-kentucky-production-starting-in-2015/">move ES production</a> to its Georgetown, KY plant. The <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/lexus/es/">ES</a> has always been built in Japan, and a report at <em>TheDetroitBureau.com</em> claims that the Kyushu facility will be tooling up to build a new model thought to be a compact hybrid crossover expected to go on sale next year. While <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/lexus/es300h/">ES300h</a> production would remain in Japan, shedding 50,000 units of traditional ES production would free capacity for what many think will be an important model in the Lexus lineup.<br />

The new CUV will come in below the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/lexus/rx/">RX</a> and be built on the platform of the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/toyota/rav4/">RAV4</a>. Speculation is that there will <a href="http://lexusenthusiast.com/2012/11/01/lexus-trademarks-nx-200t-nx-300h-for-upcoming-compact-crossover/">be an NX200t and an NX300h</a>, the former possibly getting the <a href="http://lexusenthusiast.com/2012/10/01/lexus-to-get-turbo-charged-four-cylinder-engine-in-2014/">2.0-liter turbo Toyota engine</a> due in 2014 - matching the predicted timeline for the CUV and supposedly also meant for an RX200t - and latter getting the same 2.5-liter hybrid powertrain in the ES300h. There's a guy that goes to my gym who can't get enough of the Lexus LS - let's call him Gary. Gary's the guy - you've probably got one at your gym, or coffee shop, or some other public but quasi-social location - who talks to everyone he meets. Sit next to him on the rowing machine or run by him on the track, and he's almost certainly going to bend your ear for a minute or 20. Gary is in his mid-60s, a business owner, and the super-proud owner of a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/lexus/ls/">2013 Lexus LS</a>.<br />

Not being a shy man, Gary will be the first one to tell you that he didn't do much comparative shopping (he "drove by" the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/bmw/">BMW</a> dealership, and looked at a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/bmw/7+series/">7 Series</a> "on the computer"). Being a satisfied former owner of multiple <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/lexus/rx/">Lexus RXs</a>, there was probably only a tiny statistical chance that Gary wouldn't end up in an LS when it came time for him to treat himself to the tricked out luxury car that he'd wanted for a long time. Still, when I found myself chatting with Gary about his new LS, right after I had spent a wintry week in the 2013 LS460 F-Sport AWD, I figured that he'd have some light to shed on the car.<br />
<br />
Without substantively quoting the man (I was on the rowing machine; how often do you bring a steno pad to the gym?), here are the main things that drew Gary to the LS: He's a Lexus owner, as discussed, first and foremost. He likes the brand, has had great experiences with other products, and considers the local dealer a friend who will give him "the hookup." Gary described both the engine and the ride of the LS as being "smooth" or "so smooth" at different times during our conversation, mentioning that the car was really fast, as well. Most of his praise though, was aimed at the styling of the LS, which Gary thought was beautiful inside and out. His one criticism lay with "all those gadgets" in the car, which, I was told, he mostly didn't screw around with. Based on some commenter feedback I've gotten on my last few car reviews, I think that a large portion of the <em>Autoblog</em> audience would identify with Gary's succinct (if sometimes oblique) style of vehicle evaluation. Following <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2013/04/18/toyota-offered-146-5-million-to-build-lexus-es-in-kentucky/">Thursday's report</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/toyota/">Toyota</a> has confirmed that production of the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/lexus/es/">Lexus ES</a> will move to its <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/georgetown+kentucky/">Georgetown, KY</a> assembly plant starting in 2015. To accommodate the extra 50,000 units of capacity that the ES represents, Toyota will be investing $360 million in the plant and hiring 750 new workers.<br />

In the previous report, sources stated that the state of Kentucky had offered Toyota as much as $146.5 million to move ES production to the Georgetown facility.<br />

The press release, <a href="/2013/04/19/lexus-es350-confirmed-for-kentucky-production-starting-in-2015/#continued">posted below</a>, specifies that only the ES350 will be built in Kentucky, so it's likely that the ES300h hybrid will continue to be built in Japan - where all ES models have been built since the car was introduced in 1989. <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/toyota/">Toyota</a> posted a media advisory yesterday saying that Akio Toyoda, president of Toyota, and Jim Lentz, CEO of Toyota North America, would be making a production announcement tomorrow in New York City, and <em>Automotive News</em> reports that the automaker will be announcing a plan to domestically produce the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/lexus/es/">Lexus ES</a>. According to the report, numerous plants are competing to build the ES in North America, and the State of Kentucky has offered the automaker up to $146.5 million to build the luxury sedan at the Georgetown, KY assembly plant.<br />

If Georgetown gets the ES, which has been built in Japan since its debut in 1989, it would be built alongside the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/toyota/camry/">Toyota Camry</a>, which is somewhat ironic since in our <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2013/01/24/2013-lexus-es350-review/">review of the 2013 Lexus ES350</a>, we wrote that this ES finally says "goodbye to its Camry roots." Step inside just about any new car these days and you'll quickly see that vehicle interiors have become a pretty nice place to spend some time in. For the third consecutive year, <em>WardsAuto</em> sat in each and every new vehicle that had received redesigned or updated interiors, and it has now named its 10 Best Interiors.<br />
<br />
Judges look at everything from design and fit-and-finish to comfort, safety and technology. Some of the standout selections include budget cars like the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/chevrolet/spark/">Chevrolet Spark</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/kia/forte/">Kia Forte</a> all the way up to more expensive sedans like the $60,000+ <a href="http://autoblog.com/cadillac/xts/">Cadillac XTS</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/lexus/gs/">Lexus GS450h</a>. An interesting note here is that <em>WardsAuto</em> praises <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/cadillac/">Cadillac</a> for its CUE infotainment system while <em>Consumer Reports</em> generally lambasts the system. Asian automakers definitely won the contest for nicest interiors as the list is comprised of five Japanese automakers and two South Korean, with <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/toyota/">Toyota</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/general+motors/">General Motors</a> in a dead heat with the most number of cars on the list with two each.<br />

As the master of fuel-sipping battery propulsion, Lexus has brought the impressive width of <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/toyota/">Toyota</a> hybrid engineering to bear on the GS450h. The result is a vehicle that manages to sneak its hybridness by you with buttery acceleration, stone quiet operation and brakes that don't feel like you're trying walk around the house in Velcro socks. The drivetrain doesn't feel the need to beat you over the head with its battery pack or announce to the neighborhood that you're saving the world one whispery mile at a time. Both driver and passengers get to enjoy a luxury car that just so happens to be a hybrid instead of the other way around.<br />
<br />
There's no denying just how striking the GS has become outside. For all the ridicule Lexus endured for its new Predator-maw corporate look, the design snatches eyeballs quicker than a cross Master Pai Mei. Up front, the nose manages to look fresh without straying into garishness, though Lexus designers are walking a fine line here. While the LED daytime running lamps are a bit derivative, we love the complex and sculpted lower valance. Following rumors that <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/lexus/">Lexus</a> has been <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2012/08/14/lexus-working-on-sub-rx-crossover-more-hybrids/">working on a small crossover</a> to slot below the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/lexus/rx/">RX</a> (pictured), <em>Automotive News Europe</em> reports that the production-ready CUV will bow at the 2014 <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/geneva-motor-show/">Geneva Motor Show</a> next March. Later this year, Lexus will preview this new crossover by way of a concept car at the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tokyo-motor-show/">Tokyo Motor Show</a> in November.<br />

According to the report, this new crossover will be a hybrid, and will ride on the smaller architecture that underpins the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/toyota/rav4/">Toyota RAV4</a>. Specific details have not been confirmed, but AN states that the entry-level CUV will be powered by the same 2.5-liter gasoline-electric drivetrain found in the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/lexus/es/">Lexus ES 300h</a>. Since Toyota will evidently be taking the time to hybridize the platform, we can't help but assume that it will eventually build a second-gen <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/rav4+ev/">RAV4 EV</a>.<br />

Either way, with the small luxury CUV segment heating up, Lexus is likely smart to offer a player in this space. A new report in from the website <em>Club Lexus</em> claims to have insider knowledge about a return to <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/f1/">Formula One</a> racing by <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/toyota/">Toyota</a>, this time under the auspices of the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/lexus/">Lexus</a> brand. Toyota competed in F1 from 2002 through the 2009 season. That final year saw the team return competitive, if inconsistent results, but the larger economic woes in the automotive market made a decision to pull the plug relatively easy at the time.<br />
<br />
Now, citing recent interviews with Toyota executives and insider sources, <em>Club Lexus</em> says that the move to re-enter F1 for the 2014 season is "all but finalized." The choice to go with the Lexus nameplate over Toyota makes some sense, too, considering the success that rival <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/infiniti/">Infiniti</a> has had in recent years through its partnership with Red Bull Racing. Further, the emerging Lexus identity as a performance car builder, with a strong background in hybrid vehicles, could help the F1 move resonate with buyers.<br />
<br />
A few technological factors and formula changes within F1 offer some credence to the Lexus rumor, too. F1 will increase the available capacity of KERS from 60kW to 120kW, a change that theoretically benefits the hybrid-savvy Toyota. What's more, 2014 will see a switch from the current 2.4-liter V8 engines to 1.6-liter turbocharged V6s. The sixth edition of the <a href="http://www.kbb.com/car-reviews-and-news/top-10/2013-brand-image-awards/">Kelley Blue Book Brand Image Awards</a> have crowned a wide range of winners - in a couple of cases the recipient of the laurels might say more about KBB users than they do about the actual winner. Compiled from the responses of more than 12,000 shoppers on KBB.com over the past year, there are 13 categories broken into non-luxury, luxury and truck segments "representing the combined wisdom of the American car-buying public."<br />
<br />
The award categories <a href="http://www.kbb.com/car-news/all-the-latest/2012-brand-image-awards/">have been revamped this year</a>, with some dropping off, some new ones appearing and at least one other given a new term. What isn't surprising is that <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/honda">Honda</a> won Most Trusted Brand for the second year running, Best Value Brand for the third year in a row and took Best Overall Brand, which wasn't on last year's list of awards.<br />
<br />
On our own shores, in the non-luxury categories <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/chrysler">Chrysler</a> got Most Refined Brand and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/buick">Buick</a> took Best Value Luxury Brand. Neither one of those marques won anything in last year's Brand Image Awards, while <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/cadillac">Cadillac</a>, which won Best Interior Design Brand and Best Comfort Brand last year - those awards disappeared this year - went home without a single accolade.<br />
<br />
Winners that made us go "Hmmm..." are <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/toyota">Toyota</a> for Best Overall Truck Brand and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/mini">Mini</a> for Best Performance Brand in the non-luxury segment. Last year's truck award was for the Most Rugged Truck Brand and was won by <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford">Ford</a>; the switch to "overall" takes things in a completely different direction for KBB users, it seems. And Mini dominating non-luxury performance is something we'd like to hold some focus groups to find out more about.<br />

On the sidelines of a press drive for the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/lexus/is">2014 Lexus IS</a>, the company's vice president of marketing in the US told <em>Ward's Auto</em> that the honchos in Japan have approved the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/lexus+lf-lc">Lexus LF-LC</a> concept for production. He wouldn't offer any other details on how the luxury coupe might be transformed into a vehicle for the buying masses, and that has led to a bag full of speculation.<br />
<br />
The show car was hybrid-powered and rear-wheel drive, a beautifully executed stab by <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/toyota">Toyota </a>designers in Newport Beach at redefining <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/lexus">Lexus</a>, but even with the concept, the point was to keep it "within reach for premium buyers." The report says the odds are on limited production and higher pricing than Lexus' "mainstream products," and other sites have speculated on what kind of powertrain it might end up in showrooms with.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.gtchannel.com/blog/gt-channel-exclusive-lexus-may-be-planning-two-new-coupes"><em>GT Channel</em> posits</a> that the LF-LC will be the inspiration for a coupe in the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/lexus/ls">Lexus LS</a> price bracket with a choice of either the 4.2-liter V8 or the hybrid powertrain from the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/ls+600h">LS 600h</a>, further speculating it will be called LC 550 and cost more than $100,000. It then says that there would be another coupe created beneath that one to replace the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/lexus/sc+430">SC 430</a>. <em>Lexus Enthusiast</em>, however, <a href="http://lexusenthusiast.com/2013/01/08/new-production-lexus-lf-lc-rendering-from-gt-channel/">calls those "warmed-over rumors"</a> and says that the marque probably won't deviate from its engine-capacity-naming scheme - labeling a car with a 4.2-liter V8 an LC 550. Nor does it think Lexus will use the letters LC after the company has <a href="http://lexusenthusiast.com/2012/11/06/lexus-trademarks-rc-350-for-upcoming-coupe/">trademarked "RC"</a> in the US and Australia.<br />

Sometimes fortune really smiles on even shiftless car-reviewing Dutchmen like myself, I must admit. I had come into Austin, TX the week before I was supposed to meet up with the good people at <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/lexus/">Lexus</a>, who had graciously invited me to drive the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2013/03/25/2014-lexus-is350-f-sport/">2014 IS</a>. I flew in early because Austin is a pretty good place to eat, as well as being a place that my wife doesn't live. Let me say that a nicer way... while my stunningly attractive wife pretty much represents all things good and light in this world, she does occasionally shoot me a sideways glance when I dig in for my fifth <a href="http://www.tacodeli.com/">Tacodeli</a> breakfast taco. Thankfully, I leave most of my good sense and information about the effects of high-calorie diets on lifespan at home with Molly when I come to Texas, so I can better focus my laser-like attention on car reviews and TexMex. You guys are worth it.<br />

Aside from all the tacos, I was also lucky to be visiting town the weekend before South By Southwest really kicked off in earnest, because it was that Sunday that my good old buddy John, and my new old buddy Pat, were headed up to the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/circuit+of+the+americas/">Circuit of the Americas</a> to see the first ever SCCA Majors event there. It was lucky that I had planned to be out at CotA, which is east of Austin, because that made it very slightly easier for a very nice woman named Marcia to bring me a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/lexus/is+f/">2013 Lexus IS F</a> from Houston, roughly 150 miles away.<br />

Marcia brought me the IS F to replace another press car, which was having mechanical troubles; I didn't ask for the fire-breathing IS but when it was offered up I figured I couldn't do much better as a warm up for the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/lexus/is/">2014 IS</a> program I was about to go on. See, lucky right?<br />
<br />
<strong>Driving Notes</strong><br />
<ul>
	<li>
		It's been a long time since we've written up a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2011/12/20/2011-lexus-is-f-review/">review of the IS F</a>, so let me remind everyone of a critical fact: this car lives <em>just</em> inside the borders of sanity. Forget for a moment that the 416 horsepower and 371 pound-feet of torque from the 5.0-liter V8 is actually starting to sound modest in today's turbo and biturbo days, and pay attention to the fact that the IS-F might be the easiest luxury car to get sideways that I've ever driven. Power delivery to the rear wheels via the quick-spinning V8 is incredibly rapid, so if you are inclined to introduce even smidge of steering lock into the equation, you're bound to go drifting, boy. Good thing hadn't just finished watching hours of racing at a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/formula+one/">Formula One</a> track right after I picked the car up... oh, wait.</li>
	<li>
		In many ways, the newly sporting character of the more basic IS350 is a direct result of lessons learned building this IS F. The eight-speed automatic is a carryover from the F to the new IS, even though it's handling a lot less power in the new application. I actually don't think it works quite as well in manual mode in the IS F as it does in the new IS, primarily because it doesn't react quite quickly enough to smoothly handle all the power of the quick-revving engine. I found myself really needing to shift up a beat or so before I would have expected to in order to account for the lag in the transmission. Not a horrible thing after getting used to it, but it does make it harder to squeeze out those last rpms before having to shift up. Automatic mode is unobtrusive, however, and that's what I used for three-quarters of my driving in downtown Austin, for sure.</li>
	<li>
		When I got this IS F in Austin, I was immediately transported to the first drive I'd ever had of the car, and recapitulated my thoughts on what a bruiser it is. There's very little "Lexus-like" about how the IS F rides and handles. It's stiff and almost brittle over badly surfaced roads (of which Texas has far fewer of than Michigan, thank God), with practically zero lean in hard corners. It is also loud when accelerating hard, having a flat, metallic bark of an exhaust note that seems better-suited to a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/nissan/370z/">Nissan Z car</a> than anything wearing the Lexus lazy L badge. It's almost as if the Lexus performance engineers got sort of pissed about getting teased in the Luxury Car Lunchroom and built a sort of psycho mini muscle car to get back their street cred. Yes, that means it's awesome.</li>
	<li>
		You can really see how far the Lexus interior design team has come between the launch of the IS F in 2007 and now. This older style car seems like a much less mature version of the 2014 IS, albeit with many of the same materials. The IS F has got loads of high-gloss carbon fiber, bright white leather and shiny black trim. None of that is bad, per se, in fact, John (who generally hates new cars as a rule) claimed to like the simplicity with which the controls were laid out, but it does feel immediately behind the times when compared with more recent Lexus interiors.</li>
	<li>
		On that front, Lexus doesn't have plans to discontinue the IS F in the face of the new IS. I was told that this car will stay on sale concurrently with the new model, presumably until Lexus decides to built a second generation of the F. Frankly, I couldn't even get them to confirm that a followup version of the F is set in stone at all.</li>
	<li>
		This is a completely tiny, annoying-car-writer bitch, but I can't help myself: How in the hell did the overlords at <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/toyota/">Toyota</a> sign off on a front cupholder setup this bad? The IS just has that one easy-to-use front cupholder for the front two seats. The second one requires you to drive with the center armrest pad lifted up to use. Am I the only one that ever drives with a passenger and two beverages? Has the whole world gone crazy? As soon as I saw that the new IS had remedied this with two normal cupholders, I jumped up in the air just like those Toyota commercials from the 1980s, I swear.</li>

When the now-outgoing <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/lexus/is/">Lexus IS</a> generation was launched back in 2006, the company would not have been wise to bring the compact luxury sedan to be driven by journalists to a track like Driveway Austin Motorsports. Taking along a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/bmw/3+series/">BMW 335i</a> for comparison loops would have proved an ill choice as well.<br />
<br />
Our own Jonathon Ramsey found the current-generation Lexus IS250 to be fairly nimble over a tightly wound autocross course, when he drove it back-to-back <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2012/12/06/2014-lexus-is-prototype-first-drive-review/">with the prototype version</a> of this 2014 IS a few months ago. Our track for testing the fully realized version of the IS350 F-Sport meanwhile - again with the 2013 version along for competitive driving - was on a circuit designed to string together recreations of some of the best tracks in the world. Laguna Seca, bits of the N&uuml;rburgring and sections inspired by Imola and Ferrari's Fiorano test track all make for a far more enticing road course than you'd expect to find plunked down in a nondescript area a few miles east of downtown Austin. Critically, this environment highlighted what strides <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/lexus/">Lexus</a> has made in the sport sedan race with its new IS.<br />
<br />
As a general statement, the new IS350 acquitted itself well when driven with pace on the aggressive track. During the economic downturn, many car dealerships counteracted their slowing income by focusing on things that would set them apart from competition - things like the quality of customer service they provide. When the economy picked up and more sales and service followed, many also first invested those funds back into the business, improving their dealership facilities and service centers.<br />
<br />
It looks like those investments are paying off, as <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/jd+power/">J.D. Power and Associates</a>' latest Customer Service Index Study shows that overall consumer satisfaction with dealer service has increased to 797 (on a 1,000-point scale), up from 787 in 2012 and 29 points higher than the score in 2011. The study also finds that people are more satisfied with the service they get at dealerships compared to independent service providers, despite the much higher average out-of-pocket cost per visit ($118 vs. $44).<br />
<br />
Note, however, that this study only looks at how people are treated by a dealer's service department during the first three years of ownership (the survey is based on responses from 91,000 owners and lessees of 2008 to 2012 model year vehicles), so we're talking about the experience had when bringing a car in for repair or maintenance work, most likely under warranty. In fact, maintenance work is increasing in share and accounted for 77 percent of service visits (up from 72 percent in 2012 and 63 percent in 2011). This helps explain why customer satisfaction has also risen, since a properly maintained car is one that's less likely to require a dealer visit for an unexpected repair.<br />
<br />
Of the automakers, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/lexus/">Lexus</a> again ranks highest in customer satisfaction for dealer service for the fifth consecutive year with a CSI score of 862. The Lexus ES lineup, the brand's bread-and-butter sedan, has been completely redone for 2013. With that tip-to-tail rework comes the model's first hybrid. We think the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2013/01/24/2013-lexus-es350-review/">ES350</a> is better in every way than its predecessor, so a spin in the ES300h is warranted to see what it's like to live with the model sure to become the best-selling Lexus hybrid sedan. In particular, we wanted to see how the gas-electric luxury cruiser handled the battery-sapping realities of winter, so we ventured out into the slush and snow to file this report.<br />
<br />
<strong> Driving Notes:</strong><br />
<ul>
	<li>
		Peel away the slush, and this car sure is sharp-looking. It strongly resembles the excellent new <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/lexus/gs/">GS</a>, no bad thing. With the move to the longer <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/toyota/avalon/">Toyota Avalon</a> underpinnings, the ES300h is long and elegant. Lexus has really upped its styling game lately.</li>
	<li>
		The Hybrid Synergy Drive system for the ES300h is the same setup you'll find in the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2013/01/29/2013-toyota-camry-hybrid-review/">Camry Hybrid</a>. That means a 2.5-liter Atkinson cycle engine and electric motor that are combined for 200 total horsepower and 40 miles per gallon city, 39 mpg highway. It's a generally well-behaved combo, but the thrum and drone of the four seems kind of unrefined for a Lexus.</li>
	<li>
		Usually hybrids feel punchy when you put the spurs to them thanks to the torque characteristics of the electric motors, and the ES300h is only that way to a point. It can feel breathless when trying to merge into traffic, for instance. I often found my foot pressing the accelerator flat to the carpet a lot sooner than expected.</li>
	<li>
		Hybrids are generally not great in the snow, with their harder, low-rolling-resistance tire compounds and high-torque electric motors. The ES300h performed admirably in the storm that made our pictures filthy, with power delivery that can be easily modulated to use the available traction. With a set of winter tires, you'd have no worries at all.</li>
	<li>
		The trunk is useful, even with the hybrid gear. You get a whole mess of useable space, and the rear seat legroom is enormous, too, thanks to the longer wheelbase the ES now rides on.</li>
	<li>
		The interior is quite handsome and well-trimmed, not to mention comfortable. Just like the exterior shows signs of the new mojo working at Lexus, the interior feels luxurious enough to fend off the rest of its competitors. Unfortunately, the tech is a little clunky and there are a whole bunch of cutlines that show how the center console is assembled.</li>
	<li>
		There's a Drive Mode selector so you can pick between Normal, Eco or Sport modes. Naturally, Sport is the least annoying mode, acting most like a non-hybrid car. One nice feature is you can customize the instrument cluster to display the tachometer in any mode (among other little personalizations) instead of having to look at the hybrid power meter, that's way less entertaining.</li>
	<li>
		Hybrid brakes still feel like they're slowing the car more than they really are, something you realize halfway before a collision.</li>
	<li>
		Observed fuel economy was 34 mpg combined. That's in winter, running E10, mostly highway. Not terrible, but given the EPA numbers, you might reasonably expect more.</li>
	<li>
		While the ES300h is quiet and refined (and not super-floaty, yay!) most of the time, on the highway, there's more tire noise than you'd expect.</li>
