Two years after the Range_E concept debuted at the Geneva Motor Show, thus previewing the coming Range Rover hybrid drivetrain and beginning the succeeding speculation, a company executive has confirmed the arrival of a hybrid Range Rover and Range Rover Sport later this year. The first time we'll see them is at the Frankfurt Motor Show, but Stuart Frith, chief program engineer for Range Rover Sport told Australian site Car Sales that the vehicles will be in showrooms before the year is over, as well.

As we wrote in our deep dive previewing the 2013 Range Rover, the diesel hybrid system uses a 3.0-liter V6 engine mated to a ZF eight-speed transmission with an integrated electric motor. The 1.7-kWh battery pack sits in the chassis floor, protected by a boron steel cradle, so cabin space is not compromised. The numbers we were given at the time were 333 horsepower, a sub-seven second run to 60 miles per hour in the big Range Rover and 45 imperial miles per gallon. The 2014 Range Rover Sport is expected to post the same horsepower number and battery placement. Neither of these models will be coming to the US.

The Range Rover Sport will also get a traditional diesel, the SDV8 being slotted into the engine bay, bringing 516 pound-feet of torque with it when it goes on sale later this year. Eventually, Frith said it will also get Land Rover's version of the 2.0-liter, 240-hp EcoBoost engine that propels the Evoque and the LR2 - the weight savings of the new model has made the four-cylinder a viable option.
Range Rover Hybrid heading to Frankfurt originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 07 May 2013 19:14:00 EST.
Land Rover held a 65th birthday party for itself at Packington Estate, on the grounds where its contributions to the world of off-roading were tested from the very first model in 1948 all the way through the 1970s. If you weren't there, you missed getting a piece of the birthday cake delivered by a Lynx military helicopter, but you can still get a piece of the anniversary action in the Land Rover LXV Defender SE - LXV being the ancient Roman way of writing "65."

Starting with a Defender specced with the 2.2-liter diesel and six-speed manual, the birthday-boy special edition adds a Santorini Black or Fuji White exterior hue, a Corris Grey roof and interior accents, 16-inch Sawtooth wheels, leather seats and unique badging. Pricing hasn't been announced, probably because it's rude to talk about the cost of a gift on someone's birthday.

For now you can read the press release below and see the celebrant in the high-res image gallery above.
Continue reading Land Rover Defender LXV special edition celebrates 65 years of going anywhere

Land Rover Defender LXV special edition celebrates 65 years of going anywhere originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 03 May 2013 17:46:00 EST.
After 65 years of building globe-conquering luxury vehicles, Land Rover is proving that its off-road abilities are so well known that it doesn't even have to feature a single vehicle in its advertising to convey its message. Rather than showing off a new model such as the 2013 Range Rover or the new 2014 Range Rover Sport, Land Rover's Parkour Roam Free commercial instead shows a quartet of male parkour traceurs running, jumping and flipping around in the wilderness.

Despite not showing any of its products, Land Rover has managed to create a spot that is actually both entertaining and beautiful. Check out the video posted below, and then let us know in the comments whether or not you think such marketing can be effective.
Continue reading Land Rover 'Parkour' ad shows off-road beauty without featuring a vehicle

Land Rover 'Parkour' ad shows off-road beauty without featuring a vehicle originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 01 May 2013 16:57:00 EST.
Our spy photographers believe Land Rover may be hard at work on a new, higher performance version of the company's Range Rover Sport. The creation you see here was spotted hopping around the Nürburgring, complete with a reworked front fascia that boasts larger air inlets. Those intakes could be feeding a more potent driveline with more than the 510 horsepower found in lesser Sport models. This machine could be a more venomous Range Rover Sport R.

Of course, the standard 2014 Range Rover Sport is nothing to sneeze at. Engineers pulled a baffling 800 pounds from the SUV compared to the previous generation thanks to a complete aluminum substructure. Packing 510 horsepower from a supercharged 5.0-liter V8, the performance SUV should have no trouble getting up and hustling. Stay tuned for more details as they become available.
Is Land Rover developing a Range Rover Sport R? originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 17 Apr 2013 09:28:00 EST. And Improved?

It is an undeniable reality that there are only so many adjectives to choose from when describing a given vehicle. Here are two that tend to be both overused and misused perhaps more than any other: legendary and iconic.

Forgive us for regaling you with these descriptors yet again, but when it comes to the 2013 Land Rover Range Rover, there simply aren't any words in the English language that can be applied to this sport utility vehicle that are as accurate and forceful as legendary and iconic. And what's especially impressive about our use of these adjectives is that they apply equally well when discussing the Range Rover's off-road capabilities as they do its position as a status symbol.

This marketplace position, however laudable and desirable it may be, presents a unique problem: How do you redesign a legendary SUV to be better, faster and stronger while maintaining its posh image? The boffins at Land Rover think they've nailed the art of the redesign, and we spent a week with the 2013 Range Rover to find out for ourselves if you really can mess with success and come out the victor.
Continue reading 2013 Land Rover Range Rover [w/video]

2013 Land Rover Range Rover [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 11 Apr 2013 11:57:00 EST.
Autocar reports Land Rover may be mulling a new, inexpensive SUV to slot below the company's current offerings. John Edwards, global brand director for Land Rover, has confirmed his company's product planners are currently evaluating the viability of a baby SUV. Edwards says he scan see such a model performing well in several markets, but has yet to see a convincing business case for bringing the machine to life right now. Other premium manufacturers are seriously pushing into the small CUV market with vehicles like the upcoming Porsche Macan, BMW X1 and even the Mini Countryman.

If the small Land Rover were to come to fruition, we could expect the car to carry an MSRP of around 18,000 pounds in the UK, or around $27,500 in the US at current conversion rates. Autocar reports the machine would likely borrow design cues from the beefy-looking Land Rover DC100 Concept as well as the upcoming Defender replacement.
Land Rover planning entry-level 'baby' SUV? originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 09 Apr 2013 16:29:00 EST.
From the time when all we had were rumors of a Range Rover Evoque convertible, to the grainy spy shots of said topless SUV in some English alley, to the time it rolled out on the floor of the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, nothing could keep people from asking, "Is this really happening?"

To be fair, there were a number who asked in anticipation, enthused about the prospect of getting both a commanding driving position and wide open sky in a more toothsome package than the Nissan Murano CrossCabriolet. Nevertheless, the number wasn't enough to recommend the concept for production: A report in Car and Driver says the prospects aren't "as bright as we were led to believe when the crossover cabrio debuted," and that instead an Evoque with a panoramic roof that opens is a better bet.

Elsewhere in the rapidly evolving Land Rover line-up, platform harmonization and more <strike>cowbell</strike> aluminum is the way forward. From the recent use of four platforms supporting six vehicles, there will soon be only two: the EUCD architecture for the LR2 and Evoque; all else will be built on a modified version of the D7 platform created for the new Range Rover. That puts not only variants like the Chinese-market long-wheelbase Range Rover in the aluminum game, but also models like the next Defender and LR4. That latter model is expected to bow next year, the Defender might need more time while the design department moves on from the DC100, which wasn't warmly received.
Range Rover Evoque convertible unlikely to see production originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 07 Apr 2013 17:02:00 EST.
While we knew the starting price of the 2014 Land Rover Range Rover Sport before it was even introduced last week at the New York Auto Show, we're now getting a better idea about how much it will cost to option up Land Rover's middle child. The automaker has launched the configurator for this new SUV, but as of right now, it only provides options for the base SE V6 model.

Starting at $63,495 (including $895 destination), the 2014 Range Rover Sport offers an entirely new batch of options from the current model, such as a seven-passenger seating arrangement, new safety and driving technology and a new package to make the SUV a more serious off-roader. Some of the new tech includes the $2,210 Vision and Convenience Package offering surround camera, blind spot monitor and park assist, while the new adaptive cruise control system (with low-speed operation) will run $1,295.

A key selling point for the new Range Rover Sport will likely be the "occasional use" 5+2 seating configuration adding another $2,750 to the bottom line, and the Extra Duty Package will bring a two-speed transfer case and automatic Terrain Response for $1,300. Other options include $2,000 for rear seat entertainment, $1,950 for Meridian Premium Audio and $2,100 for the Climate Comfort and Visibility Package, which delivers heated front and rear seats, heated windshield, adaptive headlights and a 16-way power driver's seat.

All in, the base Range Rover Sport SE can be optioned up to $77,850 - not including dealer-installed items - which is just about $2,000 less than the entry price for the Supercharged V8 model.
You'll get to keep your Car Guy membership card even if you haven't heard of Glenfrome of England. The company was founded in the 1970s and made some noise in the 1980s with rebodied Land Rover Range Rover creations that were, to be charitable, weird as hell. The mid-Eighties marked out a high-water point for the coachbuilders, as Glenfrome turned out six-door limos, open-backed and stair-equipped versions for reviewing military exercises (no kidding) and the utterly inscrutable Glenfrome Facet that you see before you.

Nothing makes sense about this eBay Motors listing for a 1987 Glenfrome Facet Convertible. Nothing. Its styling suggests the historically and biologically impossible progeny of a Lamborghini LM002, an Isuzu Amigo and a Volkswagen Schwimmwagen. Its pedigree suggests that it should be in the deepest reaches of some Saudi's car warehouse, not parked in a driveway in South Carolina. And its rose metallic paint over burgundy leather interior does not conceptually jive with the Desert Storm tribute on its spare tire cover. Based on the pictures here, we're guessing that the digital camera employed is from roughly the same vintage as the vehicle, too.

Rather than fight it, however, we've decided to treasure the uniqueness of finding this "Crown Prince of Saudi" Range Rover redo up for sale right here in the US. Though far from vouching for the provenance of the Facet, we suspect that this vehicle is so rare and weird that is must, almost certainly, be the real deal. Whether or not that likely validity makes it worth $52,000 (the current Buy It Now price on the listing) is another story entirely. Caveat Emptor.
eBay Find of the Day: 1987 Glenfrome Facet hides its Land Rover identity well originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 30 Mar 2013 17:00:00 EST. The New York Post reports actor Daniel Craig pocketed a cool $1 million to appear at a the New York Auto Show on behalf of Land Rover this week, despite staying at the function only briefly. The actor appeared at the Skylight at Moynihan Station on Tuesday, and was shown in a video driving the 2014 Range Rover Sport to the venue before driving onto a stage, live. From there, the actor who plays James Bond walked along a line of photographers and vanished from sight.

While speaking with The New York Post, a representative from Land Rover said, "We won't comment on our relationship with Mr. Craig beyond confirming that Land Rover supports the charity SAFE, of which the actor is a patron, and will continue its charitable efforts with a vehicle donation later this year."

You can watch Craig's entrance as well as an interview with the actor in the videos below.
Continue reading Daniel Craig nets $1M to show up at Land Rover NY, leaves quickly [w/videos]

Daniel Craig nets $1M to show up at Land Rover NY, leaves quickly [w/videos] originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 29 Mar 2013 11:00:00 EST.
Land Rover has substantially updated the appeal of its middle-child Range Rover Sport at this year's New York Auto Show, giving the model a new look, a new powertrain and an optional new third row. Functionality abounds.

As we outlined yesterday, the 2014 Range Rover Sport can now be had with a 340-horsepower, supercharged 3.0-liter V6 engine, for an opening price of $63,495 in SE trim. Start ticking options boxes on the Range Rover website, and you'll end up with a 510-hp supercharged 5.0-liter V8 mill at the heart of your $93,295 Range Rover Sport Autobiography. No matter how lushly you specify your Sport, however, you'll now have the ability to haul two more small children (or unhappy, normal sized adults) in the optional foldaway third-row seating.

We've got live images of the 2014 Range Rover Sport, fresh from the floor of New York's Javits Center, for your approval.

Filed under: New York Auto Show, SUV, Land Rover, Luxury, Off-Road

The last in line is not nearly the least, as evidenced by the 2014 Range Rover Sport, which is being unveiled to what we're sure will be the delight of New York audiences. The middle child in the Land Rover Range Rover line-up, our initial impression is that, in terms of exterior design, it might have succumbed to the anonymity of middle-child-dom, losing the strength of its character for having to wear a couple of hand-me-downs from its bigger Range Rover sibling and a ton of hand-me-ups from its smaller Evoque sibling.

In front and in back it looks like a larger Evoque, with the Range Rover's tapering blade lights and LED day-time running lights. It shall be known by its twin-bar thematic elements such as the two-bar grille, the strakes in the side vents and the two vents on the hood. It's also got a faster windscreen angle and is more aerodynamic throughout, returning a coefficient of drag of just 0.34 for a vehicle that is 2.5 inches longer than before. The wheelbase has also been stretched by a huge seven inches.

Still, it's a comprehensive rework. It's new aluminum structure deletes 800 pounds of heft, and it weighs about 100 pounds less than a similarly equipped Range Rover. As with bigger bro, the Sport gets either the 340-horsepower 3.0-liter supercharged V6 or the 510-horsepower 5.0-liter supercharged V8 that are fitted with stop/start tech. Both run through a ZF eight-speed transmission, and power is put to the ground through a single-speed Torsen differential or an optional two-speed transfer case with low range.

Commanding that increased off-road capability is the Terrain Response 2 system and its new Automatic setting. It has more articulation to play with, the brand new aluminum suspension worth 21.2 degrees of articulation - and the emergency off-road high setting gets higher while the access height goes even lower.

The interior wears more soft-touch materials; features a smaller, thicker steering wheel; more sculpting and padding in the front seats and individual seating for rear occupants. With all that extra space between the wheels, the back-seaters can get inside more easily, and the "Ta da!" feature in the new Sport is a power-operated third row option for "occasional use."

Prices will begin at $63,495 for the Range Rover Sport SE and its 3.0-liter supercharged V6, then go to $68,495 for the HSE, $79,995 for the Supercharged that puts the 5.0-liter supercharged V8 underhood, and $93,295 for the Autobiography. All of those prices include the $895 destination charge.

Even with all that, we haven't begun to tell you about its new features, so have a seat and a drink while you enjoy the exhaustive press release below.
Conspicuous consumption is a vice that wealthy Americans have down to a science, but it's safe to say that the richest members of the Middle Eastern elite have elevated it to an art.

The latest example that we've seen of said artistry is a Range Rover that has been elaborately festooned with coinage from some of the most oil-rich nations of the region. The work has been done by an outfit called Coins Car - we're hoping there's some witticism there that just doesn't translate into English - and has seen some 57,412 coins adhered to the surface of the SUV. Following the flag markers, we see that coins from Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman and Saudi Arabia have all been represented, and with United Arab Emirates getting more real estate than the rest of the crew.

Less than 24 hours after Land Rover released its first video teaser of the upcoming 2014 Range Rover Sport ahead of its New York Auto Show debut, it appears someone has already spilled the beans. The image you see here comes from the VMax 200 Facebook page, and it clearly shows what looks to be the new Sport hanging out in a garage.

Design-wise, the new Sport appears to borrow heavily from the smaller Evoque crossover while still having plenty of cues that tie it to the all-new Big Daddy Range Rover. The two-tier grille mimics the three-tier one of the larger Range Rover, and the headlamp and taillamp clusters follow similar design cues (though the rear lights are more squared off than vertical), but parts of the front fascia are clearly reminiscent of the pretty little Evoque, as are the rocker panel flares that remind of the three-door model. Unlike its costlier Range Rover sibling, there are no vertical faux side vents embossed in the door skins - instead, there's a small fender vent above the front wheels with a pair of matte silver strakes to give directional thrust.

Land Rover has not yet released any details about the 2014 Range Rover Sport, only saying that it will be the company's "fastest, most responsive and most agile vehicle to date." Stay tuned for the official unveiling on March 26.
Are you the 2014 Range Rover Sport? originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 13 Mar 2013 12:30:00 EST.
Land Rover is gearing up for this year's New York Auto Show with a teaser for the company's new Range Rover Sport. The brief clip doesn't reveal much beyond a fender and a quick glimpse at a headlamp (which picks up the flared look of the new Range Rover), but we do get to put an ear on the machine's exhaust note for the first time. Trust us when we tell you you'll want to get friendly with your volume knob on this one. Details are scarce as can be at the moment, but it certainly sounds as if there are eight furious cylinders burbling away in this thing.

The last time we saw the Range Rover Sport in development, it was prancing around in the snow near the Arctic Circle. That peek didn't give us much to go on beyond some suggestion towards a significantly revised lower fascia, though we have heard Land Rover is working on whipping up a seven-passenger version of the Range Rover Sport in addition to the standard five-passenger model. Since previous iterations of the RRS have derived their underpinnings from the seven-passenger LR4, that would seem to be a pretty easy thing to engineer. While you're waiting for the Big Apple reveal, you can check out the new teaser video below.

Continue reading Land Rover releases first Range Rover Sport teaser footage

Land Rover releases first Range Rover Sport teaser footage originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 12 Mar 2013 15:45:00 EST.

Filed under: New York Auto Show, SUV, Land Rover, Luxury

Well, this makes sense. Considering the fact that New York is the single largest market for the Range Rover Sport, it's only fitting that Land Rover has chosen the upcoming New York Auto Show as the venue to debut the all-new 2014 model.

According to Land Rover, the new Range Rover Sport will be unveiled on March 26, the night before the show kicks off. At that time, the new luxury SUV will be driven through Manhattan in what the automaker calls a "groundbreaking live drive." The whole shebang will be broadcast to audiences around the world via the new Range Rover Sport's microsite.

Land Rover says the 2014 Range Rover Sport will be the company's "fastest, most responsive and most agile vehicle to date," and while the teaser image above doesn't give away too much (click above for a larger view), we fully expect the new SUV to incorporate design elements from both the Big Daddy Range Rover and the smaller Evoque crossover.

We'll have the full brace of information ready for you on the 26th, so stay tuned. For now, have a look below to scan Land Rover's offic ial press blast, and head over to the microsite for more information.
Continue reading Land Rover to unveil next Range Rover Sport in New York

Land Rover to unveil next Range Rover Sport in New York originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 11 Mar 2013 08:44:00 EST.
Pink, mirror-finish paint. Or as Hamann says, "a color that exhibits nothing more but self-confidence." Basically, tuning company Hamann has created a vehicle that looks like it comes as part of the "Sex, Drugs and Rock N' Roll" Edition Barbie play set.

Its official name is the Mystère, based on the new-for-2013 Range Rover, and it's as ugly as it is shiny. As for the, um, body enhancements, Hamann created a four-part widebody kit out of carbon composite, adding 80 millimeters to the SUV's width. And by the way, don't just assume you know the full depth of the car's ugly from this fancy front three-quarter view. Have a good hard look at the nose, dead-on. Now you get it.

Hamann says that the 5.0-liter supercharged V8 has been fine-tuned and enhanced, but no power numbers are given. As for ride and handling, we can only imagine that it's significantly worse than the stock Range Rover, what with the car sitting a full 40 millimeters lower to the ground, now riding on 23-inch wheels wrapped in 305/30-series rubber.

We weren't able to get a look inside, but we can only imagine what's been done to the Rangie's interior. Hamann says the "in-house upholstery department can fulfill all your designer wishes" with a wide range of carbon, aluminum, leather, alcantara, double clear coat and stainless steel finishes.

Perhaps our favorite part about the 2013 Geneva Motor Show is seeing what the random coachbuilder companies roll out for our viewing pleasure, and this Hamann Mystère is a truly exceptional piece of show candy. Truth be told, I have always considered the Range Rover Sport to be something of a poseur in the Land Rover lineup, but there's one big reason this SUV is so popular in chic cities like New York and Miami - it has the boxy, instantly recognizable looks of a classic Range Rover but with a sportier demeanor. In fact, if sister marque Jaguar ever does get around to building an SUV (as has been rumored for years), I have the feeling it will have the ride quality, performance and handling similar to the Range Rover Sport, albeit with a greater on-road emphasis.

Coming in at just under $80,000, the 2013 Land Rover Range Rover Sport is no easy financial pill to swallow, but even now, with its replacement waiting just off-stage, it's just hard to say anything that bad about an SUV that is equal parts off-road, luxury and performance. Land Rover has kept the Sport fresh with a mess of small tweaks (new wheel and interior color options, etc.), and we thought spending a week with this generation would be a fine sendoff before the all-new 2014 model arrives.

Driving Notes

First and foremost, the performance of the Range Rover Sport Supercharged is a result of the supercharged 5.0-liter V8 under the hood cranking out 510 horsepower and 461 pound-feet of torque. That's enough power to get this almost-three-ton SUV to accelerate from 0-60 in just 5.9 seconds, which is not too far off the pace from a Porsche Cayenne S. Moving that kind of mass takes a lot of fuel, and the engine isn't afraid to suck down the octane - I averaged just over 11 mpg for the week in mostly city driving.

My biggest disappointment with this Range Rover was how flat and uninspiring the exhaust note sounded (especially knowing how great the supercharged Jags sound using the same engine).

It's very unlikely you're going to see a Range Rover Sport tackling any serious trails, but that's not because it can't. While most Range Rover Sport owners likely consider off-roading to consist of splashing through big puddles in NYC or kicking up sand blown onto Miami Beach's Ocean Drive, the Sport is no less capable off-road than its brethren thanks to its height-adjustable suspension and Terrain Response System. There's even an off-road screen that lets the driver know the articulation of each wheel, whether the differentials are locked and the angle of the front tires.

Terrain Response takes the guesswork out of off-road driving by providing five simple modes that are all accessible at the push of a button (yes, the days of locking hubs and manual transfer cases are long gone for most modern off-roaders). Purists might take issue with this system - or similar ones used by Jeep and Ford - but it's hard to argue with the simplicity and user-friendliness that Terrain Response provides. Most of the Terrain Response settings are there to make off-roading easier, but the Range Rover Sport also comes with a Dynamic mode that tightens up the steering, throttle and transmission for a sportier feel.

Most of the time while driving the Sport, every bit of its weight and size is felt -especially when it comes to fuel economy - but I was surprised on numerous occasions by its small turning radius. At a local parking lot where some smaller sedans require a three-point maneuver for turning around, the Range Rover Sport managed the deed in one fluid motion. Another time while testing the off-road capabilities in loose sand, the tight turning radius again came in handy as I was able to confidently make some sharp turns without slowing down or stopping - very important when driving in loose terrain such as sand or snow.

Maybe it's the fact that I now live in Florida and have no need for a heated windshield, but my biggest pet peeve about current Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles is the tiny wires that run through the windshield for the heating elements. They are just small enough not to obstruct the driver's view but are also noticeable enough to be annoyingly distracting - especially at night when bright headlights are approaching. It's been years since I've had to worry about clearing thick ice from a windshield, so I'm not doubting this is a useful tool for owners in the North, but these thin, squiggly lines can sometimes be a distraction. Perhaps it should be an option.

Speaking of distractions, one of my favorites on the Range Rover Sport comes courtesy of the $1,200 Vision Assist Package, which adds a five-camera view around the vehicle. In theory, this is an excellent tool for off-road driving as it allows you to see nearby obstacles without actually having to get out of the car, but for some reason, the cameras operate at any speed, making for a pretty tempting distraction while driving.

An interesting part of the Range Rover Sport's design is that its instrument panel is actually positioned above the hood giving a commanding view of the road. Even with the seat in its lowest setting, I still felt like I was sitting up way too high. But this, along with Rover's relatively narrow window pillars, actually provided for excellent visibility while driving, a remnant of Land Rover's obsession with off-roading, where it's important to know exactly what immediately surrounds your vehicle.

In most of these pictures, I photographed this tester's air suspension in Access suspension setting to give it a lowered look, but its main purpose is to making ingress and egress easier. For optimal off-roading, the air suspension can also be raised (as seen above), giving it ample ground clearance. The vehicle automatically reverts to normal ride height when speed tops 30 miles per hour.

Somewhere in the Land Rover corral at the Geneva Motor Show next to that nine-speed ZF 9HP automatic transmission will be seven Land Rover Defender electric research vehicles. The Advanced Engineering Team replaced the diesel in the front of its 110-Series Defender with an electric motor producing 94 horsepower and 243 pound-feet of torque running through a single-speed transmission, powered by a 300-volt lithium-ion battery with a 27kWh capacity. The resulting specs are a range beyond 50 miles, eight hours of low-speed off-road work and a four-hour recharge using a 7kW quick charger.

The air-cooled testbed can still be run like a traditional Defender and wade through 800 millimeters of water. There are no plans to make any for the public, but Land Rover will be sending the prototypes out into the world for real-world trials later this year while they study electric propulsion. Check out the press release below for more details on the silent explorer.
Continue reading Land Rover reveals electrified Defender research vehicle

Land Rover reveals electrified Defender research vehicle originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 28 Feb 2013 10:45:00 EST.
Among the future shocks to be shown at the rapidly approaching Geneva Motor Show, Land Rover will be displaying a nine-speed transmission it has been working with ZF to develop. Engineered for transverse - read: usually front-wheel drive - applications, the ZF 9HP will replace the six-speed transmission in the Evoque come 2014.

The three extra ratios add just a quarter of an inch in length to the case, yet it's 16.5 pounds lighter than that six-speed. The built-in benefits of the extra gears are better fuel economy and lower emissions, and the even lower gears possible will improve the Evoque's (never-used) off-road capability. The designed benefits are an adaptive shifting system that tailors the transmission to the driving style, a skip-shift function that avoids the need to move sequentially through the gears, and "Fast-Off" and "Curve" modes that take two different approaches to managing upshifts.

While it is the Evoque that breaks the news, it is rumored that the Dodge Dart will be getting this South Carolina-built transmission as well.
Continue reading Land Rover bringing world's first nine-speed automatic transmission to Geneva

Land Rover bringing world's first nine-speed automatic transmission to Geneva originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 27 Feb 2013 11:30:00 EST.
