Question: When does the desire to win dictate that a racing driver try to drive slower than everyone else? Answer: When those drivers are attempting to qualify for the opening of the World Touring Car Championship at the Salzburgring track in Austria.

And now for the why. It seems that, after racing hard for the first several minutes of the qualifying session, several drivers decided to slow down to let others pass them in an effort to follow close behind in the slipstream. It's a well-known fact that drafting is one way to gain an advantage in close wheel-to-wheel racing, but the desire to catch a competitor has never proven so comical as it did in this instance.

The final lap of qualifying was so slow that time ran out as the field limped their way around the track. Officials were not amused, and after it was all said and done, 12 drivers were handed penalties, leaving Michel Nykjaer, who was not penalized, on pole. Check out the ridiculous scene of poor sportsmanship on video below.
Continue reading WTCC drivers try to get pole position by going... slower?

WTCC drivers try to get pole position by going... slower? originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 19 May 2013 13:05:00 EST.
One driver in Portland, OR should make a hefty donation to his or her local wildlife conservation group after a family of ducks got the person out of a speeding ticket. A Portland police officer clocked a car going 52 miles per hour in a 35-mph zone, but when the officer went to pursue the speeder, a mother duck and her two ducklings ran some unintended interference.

Rather than just going around the ducks, the officer blocks the street to usher the waterfowl from the road. While the speeder got away, it's nice to see some compassion from the authorities. Besides, the gesture might've saved more than just the ducks from an unfortunate accident on the rain-slicked road. Scroll down to watch the video taken from the patrol car's dash cam.
Continue reading Portland police pursuit quack down caught on dash cam

Portland police pursuit quack down caught on dash cam originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 17 May 2013 16:58:00 EST.
After the Good-Samaritan-fest that was the last Russian dash cam video, it's back to our regularly scheduled program of scamming and madness. This time, it's a woman who attempts to pretend she's been hit by a car and rendered unconscious, the same tired con-job that happens to be one of the primary reasons that Russians probably perform more surveillance on themselves than the state does.

It's a remarkably bad job of method acting on the woman's part (is she drunk?), but we'll give her credit for persistence. The worst acting job you'll see all day is on video just below.
Continue reading Pedestrian fakes hilariously bad hit, foiled by Russian dash cam

Pedestrian fakes hilariously bad hit, foiled by Russian dash cam originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 15 May 2013 19:58:00 EST.
For some reason, having unlikely rappers - like minivan-driving suburbanites or British mothers - spit about their rides is still a catchy advertising hook, even in other cultures. Far more so, we're guessing, than having P. Diddy sing about his dog and his pickup truck or a Brazilian street gang doing a Celtic dirge, for example.

And that's how you get three grandmothers ridin' <s>dirty</s> clean in a Mitsubishi i electric vehicle. The ad for the Belgian car sharing company Cambio - promoting the i in its fleet - gets the three "omaatjes" rolling through town in veteran hip-hop fashion, right down to the police once-over. Check out how they do it in the video below, but beware, there is some explicit language.
Continue reading Rapping grandmas love the Mitsubishi i EV

Rapping grandmas love the Mitsubishi i EV originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 13 May 2013 19:15:00 EST.
Let this be a lesson to those of you who plan to visit Unalaska, Alaska (yes, it's a real city on Unalaska Island in the Aleutian Islands): If you park at Safeway with a garbage bag full of fish fillets in your pickup's bed, the eagles will find you. That's what happened above when an unidentified man parked his Nissan and returned to find a convocation of bald eagles feasting on his fish.

Neither the man nor those parked near his truck could get to their cars for fear of getting a beatdown from The 'Murica Bird, and police were called to break it up, which they did with neither beast nor fowl injured in the process.

Other than being awesome watching, other things we can take away from this video are the question who comes up with bird gathering names (a "murmuration" of herons and an "unkindness" of ravens?), and the bounty of this comment left by user "Abraham" at the KUCB news report: "It's just that the luxury edition has so much more eagle, it saddens me to think of you missing out." See what caused it all in the video below.
Continue reading Convocation of eagles takes over bed of Nissan pickup

Convocation of eagles takes over bed of Nissan pickup originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 13 May 2013 12:45:00 EST.
Here's a prediction: If you're an adult that thinks Micro Machines were cool (and maybe still are) and has an affinity for stop motion animation, you're probably already familiar with Adult Swim's Robot Chicken. There's a super-geeky Venn diagram to be made here (wait... is there any other kind of Venn diagram?), were our full-time infographics illustrator not on strike.

In any event, the mad minds and steady modeling hands behind the stop motion Robot Chicken are the talented group that call themselves The League of Buddies, and their business Stoopid Buddy Studios. It might be that Cartoon Network needs to come up with some more work for the animators, as they've clearly had some time on their hands to work on projects like this: an action-packed stop-motion short called Micro Mayhem!.

We could try to explain just what this is, and why it's so worth watching, but better that you simply scroll down, press play, and enjoy the hilarity (and surprisingly convincing engine/exhaust soundtrack) for yourself.
Continue reading 'Micro Mayhem!' stop-motion video made by Robot Chicken crew

'Micro Mayhem!' stop-motion video made by Robot Chicken crew originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 06 May 2013 20:01:00 EST.
With Mother's Day coming up, we're always looking for new gift ideas to celebrate the occasion, but hot laps around a track might not be the best suggestion for Darius Khashabi. In a video posted on YouTube, Khashabi straps his mom into the passenger seat of his C6 Corvette Z06 for some laps around Sonoma Raceway (formerly Infineon Raceway) at "60 percent" with comical results.

Now this isn't the first time Mama Khashabi has gotten seat time in her son's car around a track, as his YouTube page shows him pulling a similar stunt - with similar results - around Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca last year. Scroll down for the video, but know that the action really gets going at around the 1:40 mark.
Continue reading Mother's Day Suggestion No. 2,506

Mother's Day Suggestion No. 2,506 originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 02 May 2013 19:59:00 EST.
Small businesses are the lifeblood of our economy, but sometimes word-of-mouth advertising is more effective than attempting to create your own commercial. Take this video for Arlen's Transmission in Burbank, CA, for example. It is equal parts hilarious and creepy, and comes from the mind of comedy duo Rhett & Link, who've made quite a name for themselves turning a love of local commercials into an art form. The pair finds local businesses looking for free promotion, and then works with them to create masterpieces like this one, all for free.

If you think starting a commercial with "Hey baby, how does your car run?" is bad, things only go downhill from here... with the exception of a clean-looking Volkswagen Thing, of course. If you're up for a good chuckle, check out the commercial posted below. You can also visit here to see more Rhett & Link local commercials, as well as nominate your own favorite local business for the same treatment.
Continue reading Watch the most amazing and creepy transmission shop ad ever made

Watch the most amazing and creepy transmission shop ad ever made originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 30 Apr 2013 19:15:00 EST.
While the beaver has lately made headlines for attacking people, the otter seen in this video from YouTuber iSparra stays on the playful side as it romps around the inside of a vehicle uninvited. Or rather, it stayed on the playful side since, full disclosure, this video is old - but for some reason it's just floated to the top of the Internet's consciousness right now, having just gone viral. And where else are you going to be able to read the comment, "Grand Theft... otto," right?

The setup: Tourists in the wilds of Borneo returned to their SUV and the otter jumped in when they opened the doors. Then he wouldn't get out. Then, although it's not in the video, he apparently chased the vehicle when they finally managed to extricate him and leave. Warning, there's a spot of foul language about 15 seconds in the video below, but otherwise it's otter, otter everywhere.
Continue reading Playful otter makes bid for world's cutest hitchhiker

Playful otter makes bid for world's cutest hitchhiker originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 29 Apr 2013 14:57:00 EST.
From early cave paintings tens of thousands of years ago to the bathroom stall at our favorite bar, humans have probably been scribbling male genitalia on flat surfaces ever since we, as a species, first learned how to draw. While science has allowed us to do many great things, perhaps our finest moment came recently when NASA inadvertently drew a penis - captured in the image above - on the surface of the Red Planet. Checkmate to all you graffiti artists out there.

While this might seem like a comical stunt dreamed up by the guys over at Top Gear or even the geeks from Big Bang Theory, this is actually the result of Mars Rovers Spirit and Opportunity leaving tire tracks on the surface of the Red Planet. Although the drawing is said to be accidental, we'd like to imagine that some of the smartest people on the planet operating the equipment still have an incredible sense of humor.
Mars Rover draws giant phallus on Red Planet originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 24 Apr 2013 10:58:00 EST.
South Korea takes the dignity of its traffic cones very, very seriously. As you've likely heard by now, Psy has released his long-anticipated followup to his international hit "Gangnam Style." The new single, "Gentleman," follows the singer as he behaves like anything but. The video has already garnered some 144.6 million views on YouTube, but the South Korean network KBS has banned the clip for one very specific reason. In the first few seconds, Psy walks up and kicks a traffic cone that reads, "No Parking."

KBS has labeled the video inappropriate because of the cone punt, saying, "KBS' standards are very different from the internet, online broadcaster or cable channels. This is because network TV is watched by everyone regardless of gender and age. Infants or children haven't fully developed a standard for judgement and tend to believe and follow what's shown on television."

Think of the children, Psy. You can watch the clip below for yourself. Just don't blame us if you're compelled to direct some violence towards an innocent cone.
Continue reading South Korean network bans Psy 'Gentleman' video for disrespecting traffic cones

South Korean network bans Psy 'Gentleman' video for disrespecting traffic cones originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 18 Apr 2013 12:44:00 EST.
A good rule to live by is that you should never mess with another man's car, but Roman Atwood learned that you probably shouldn't even pretend with another man's ride... especially when it's a Ferrari 360 Modena. The internet prankster was trying to perform a little handicap parking spot justice by acting as if he were urinating on an Italian supercar that he felt was illegally parked.

Needless to say, the owner of the car was not amused by Atwood's antics, proceeding to shove him, shout obscenities and even yell, "I could buy your whole family." Both men seem like real class acts. Check out the prank-gone-wrong below.
Continue reading Pranked angry Ferrari owner says urine trouble now, man!

Pranked angry Ferrari owner says urine trouble now, man! originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 16 Apr 2013 10:15:00 EST. That's exactly what 19-year-old Jerimiah Hartline did after he bounced his pilfered a big rig off of a number of vehicles in Temecula, CA. Hartline told the police he was attempting to flee from zombies when the accident happened, but that didn't stop law enforcement from charging him with a rash of offenses, including auto theft, attempted auto theft, reckless driving, hit-and-run resulting in injury and driving without a license among others.

California Highway Patrol said truck driver Daniel Martinez picked Hartline up in Tennessee as he was headed to San Diego. But when Martinez stopped to make adjustments to his truck just off of I-15, Hartline jumped behind the wheel and took off after having visions of zombies "coming after him."

There is some suspicion Hartline was under the influence of a controlled substance.

The young man then proceeded to swerve the truck from side to side in an attempt to elude his imagined pursuers. After around two miles, Hartline struck and overturned a Toyota Tacoma, which then bounced into a Toyota 4Runner and a Mercedes-Benz. Hartline then struck a Ford Taurus and a Honda Accord before jackknifing and blocking all four lanes of traffic. Hartline has since pleaded not guilty to all charges.
Man blames zombies for causing him to crash stolen big rig originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 15 Apr 2013 08:43:00 EST.

I've spent three days crammed in the axle well of this 1989 Mustang with nothing to keep me company beyond a trouble light, a DeWalt drill on the very last of its legs and billion razor sharp, red hot slivers of metal with an affinity for my most sensitive of regions. My joints are raw from crawling around on the concrete. I'm half deaf from the shriek of the spot weld cutter and the boom of the cold chisel and hammer.

There are many things I could call this exercise. A party is not one of them. You see, after test-fitting the independent rear suspension from a 2004 Mustang Cobra into the old Fox Body I was left with the really challenging portion of the install: the details.

Technically, I could have simply plumbed some brake lines, said, "screw the emergency brake," dropped in a driveshaft and rolled, but I want this car to function in all the ways a road machine should, while still being able turn a decent lap on a road course. Combine that desire with a compulsion to scrape every ounce of unnecessary weight from the Mustang, and the result is me doing my best impression of a hammer-wielding Quasimodo, contorted into the void where the rear suspension should be.

If it wasn't obscene enough to go off-roading in a Rolls-Royce Phantom or rally driving a Ferrari Enzo, the Tax The Rich crew has gotten its hands on a pair of ultra-rare Ferrari F50 models to perform a tug-of-war battle, which we usually see reserved for pickup trucks. Only 349 F50s were ever built, but this video pits two of them against each other by attaching a rope to the front ends, throwing the shifter into reverse and punching the throttle.

As we've come to expect from this video troupe, the action starts off with plenty of gravel-chucking, dirt-road drifting before the two cars finally meet head-to-head. Scroll down to watch the 520-hp V12s screaming in reverse as the tires smoke away.
Continue reading Ferrari F50s duel in world's most improbable tug-of-war

Ferrari F50s duel in world's most improbable tug-of-war originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 11 Apr 2013 15:00:00 EST.
We'll admit to having been pretty irritated at the NASCAR-centric programming at Speed in the past, but never to the point of stripping down to our bare backsides and terrorizing the company's offices.

That's exactly what one unidentified man did early Monday morning in Charlotte, NC. Police responded shortly after the individual entered the building, and while he started by tearing papers off of the wall, he soon moved on to dumping trash cans and flinging trophies around. After realizing that law enforcement was on the scene, the man attempted to make a run for it.
Police quickly caught up with the perpetrator, however. It's unclear if he's facing charges for his sans-clothing antics. Listen, guy, we're pretty sure there are better ways to tell Speed to bring back its WRC coverage.
Speed Network offices ransacked by naked intruder originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 11 Apr 2013 08:46:00 EST.

Never underestimate how much fun can be had by tricking drive-thru workers into believing you're actually a decapitated corpse. That old chestnut just never gets tired. YouTube user MagicofRahat is back at it again, tormenting fast-food workers with a bit of light-hearted fun. While we've seen him pull all sorts of pranks in the past, including pretending to pass out in the drive through, using a scary doll in the driver's seat and simply pretending like there's no one driving the car, this is probably his best stunt to date.

The premise is simple enough. Rahat uses a headless Halloween costume and zip-up jacket to make it look like he's, well, headless. But for us, what really sells the joke is how he then pretends nothing is wrong. Comic gold. You can check it out in the video below.
Continue reading Drive-thru prank guy loses his head

Drive-thru prank guy loses his head originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 08 Apr 2013 19:59:00 EST.
Or at least that's the claim. Grunnar and The Grizzly Boys have released a new video for their song Could Be Me, and the clip claims to have been made possible with the help of a Google Street View car. Instead of using seamlessly edited video, the band opted for what looks to be a rolling concert performed from the back of three pickups in front of a Street View car. There are a couple of issues with that notion, though. First off, the Street View software automatically blurs faces, and everyone's mug is clearly visible in the music video.

Second, we imagine that if Google was involved in this project from any angle, the tech company would promote it with a vengeance. More likely, the video was created using a GoPro to snap photos every three seconds. Still, that doesn't make it any less hilarious. You can check it out below for yourself, or head over to iTunes to snap up the album. We won't judge you.
Continue reading Country band shoots guerrilla music video via Google Street View

Country band shoots guerrilla music video via Google Street View originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 01 Apr 2013 20:01:00 EST.
Happy April, everyone. And we all know what this first day of the month means: April Fools' Day. Today is a national holiday for pranksters with the Internet acting as a serious enabler, and it's always fun to see what kind of vivid imaginations exist out there in the automotive world. The abundance of fake news gets a little old as the day rolls on, but we did manage to get in a few chuckles thanks to a handful of major automakers and automotive news outlets that got into the pranking spirit this year

Some of our favorites this year includes Subaru showing what happens when you combine a bunch of rumors, a Corvette some may have already thought was a joke or Honda providing some in-car innovation circa the late 1980s. Honestly, we're still waiting for official confirmation from Mitsubishi that the recently introduced 2014 Mirage is an elaborate April Fools' joke using a failed design intended for the 1995 Geo Metro. We dug up as much "official" OEM foolishness we could find, as well as some of our other favorites, and posted them all below.
Continue reading Automotive April Fools' joke roundup [w/videos]

Automotive April Fools' joke roundup [w/videos] originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 01 Apr 2013 19:00:00 EST.
We've seen all manner of Top Gear tributes, but this is something of a different caliber altogether. British comedy duo Hawkeye and Windy have worked up a musical homage to the ever-contrarian Jeremy Clarkson with a tune that mocks the TV personality's critics. Clarkson has a long and documented history of agitating just about every group of people on the planet with his off-color comments. The song in the video after the jump pokes fun at everyone who's taken offense with some clever lyrics and one suitably creepy Clarkson mask.

We can't say we'll be watching this one more than once, but it's worth giving it a click through. Take a look for yourself below.
Continue reading Jeremy Clarkson gets his own song

Jeremy Clarkson gets his own song originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 01 Apr 2013 12:45:00 EST.
