Toyota's agelessly beautiful 2000GT has been sold by RM Auctions for $1.16 million, making it the new record holder for the most expensive Asian car ever sold. As always, rarity played a big factory in driving up the price; just 351 2000GT models were built, and only 62 left-hand-drive cars (like this one). The classic Toyota, standout member of Texas car-collector Don Davies' paddock, was originally a US-delivery car that spent time in a collection back in a Japan before returning to Texas just a short time ago. The car last sold in March of 2011, for just $650,000.

Enthusiasts will recognize the 2000GT as perhaps the most heralded Japanese classic of all time. The Toyota was a contemporary of the Jaguar E-Type - though one that obviously sold in a fraction of the English car's numbers - that was well reviewed by the motoring press of the day. Sometimes referred to as Japan's first supercar, the 2000GT boasted a 150-horsepower, dual overhead cam, 2.0-liter straight-six engine; a five-speed manual transmission; and a reported top speed of over 135 miles per hour.

RM described this record-setting example as, "the finest and most authentic 2000GT to come to market in recent years," equating it with blue chip classic exotics like the Ferrari Daytona and Lamborghini Miura.
1967 Toyota 2000GT most expensive Asian car ever sold at $1.2M originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 10 May 2013 17:03:00 EST.
This year's award for Life Ball Mini designer goes to Roberto Cavalli. The Life Ball is a charity event held in Vienna, Austria every year that raises money to fight the spread of HIV and AIDS. Since 2001, the year of its reintroduction, Mini has been involved with the ball, auctioning a car that has been made over by a world-famous designer. This year Cavalli gets the nod and a Paceman for a canvas.

The iridescent brown/black paint is the eye-catcher in the sketch above (click to enlarge), but don't forget to note Cavalli's logo on the roof. We're not sure what other flourishes he has in mind for the car, but those in attendance will find out on May 24 when it's unveiled at the Cavalli store opening in Vienna. The press release below has more details.
Continue reading Mini Paceman modified by Roberto Cavalli for annual Life Ball charity

Mini Paceman modified by Roberto Cavalli for annual Life Ball charity originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 10 May 2013 08:44:00 EST.
This is what you get as your first car after you've just passed your driver's test at the age of 25: a 1965 Ferrari 330GT 2+2 Coupe. Of course, that's assuming your name also happens to be John Lennon and you've just helped record Ticket to Ride with the rest of your Beatles cronies.

When news of Lennon getting a driver's license made the newspapers in England, luxury car makers parked outside his mansion with offerings and this is the one he chose, painted Azzuro Blue with a blue interior. He paid 6,500 pounds, said to be equivalent to 110,000 pounds today ($170K US).

Bonhams will be auctioning the blue Italian at this year's Goodwood Festival of Speed on July 12. It was just one of 500 built, has been restored to its original condition, has matching numbers and its original license plate number. The pre-auction estimate is between 180,000 and 220,000 pounds ($278K - $340K US).

Have a read of the press release below for more on the history of Lennon's Ferrari and a few of the other big-money classics that will go under the hammer.
Continue reading John Lennon's first car being sold at auction

John Lennon's first car being sold at auction originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 09 May 2013 19:14:00 EST.
The Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR was built as a race car for the FIA GT Championship series in 1997. To meet homologation requirements, a total of 26 road-going vehicles were built in the following years. The rarest were the open-roof roadster models, of which only six were made. While 24 of the street-legal cars were fitted with a 6.9-liter V12, good for more than 600 horsepower, two were upgraded to "CLK GTR Super Sport" configuration with a 7.3-liter V12 rated at 655 horsepower. Performance was spectacular, with a 0-60 sprint of about 3.7 seconds and a top speed of just over 200 miles per hour.

The original sticker price for the CLK GTR Super Sport, more than a decade ago, was $1,547,620 - dissuading most of us from buying one. But if you missed out last time, we just found a clean example that has apparently been sitting inside a showroom in Arkansas waiting for a new owner. It is reportedly the only roadster currently in the United States. Federalized and street legal, its odometer shows only 70 delivery miles (are we the only ones who consider it a shame nobody has ever enjoyed wringing it out?). Fresh off an extensive factory service, this museum piece boasts a Buy it Now price of $1,995,980. So much for depreciation, eh?

[Update: One of our readers correctly pointed out that the car has depreciated... as its original selling price of $1.547 million is $2.2 million in today's money!]

eBay Find of the Day: 2002 Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR Roadster... in Arkansas? originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 09 May 2013 16:28:00 EST.
Over the last decade or so, competition in NASCAR has led to some pretty funky looking racecars. And when the sport was still up and coming, the tight competition actually led to some interesting production cars. The Dodge Charger Daytona and Plymouth Superbird are perhaps the most well-known cars of the sport's "aero wars" era but the Ford Torino King Cobra might have been the most memorable of all, if not for some different homologation rules established in 1970. The Torino King Cobra never made it to production and never competed in NASCAR, but three examples exist including this one now for sale on eBay.

Designed as a successor for the aero-tuned Torino Talladega, the Torino King Cobra has a sleeker front end with hidden headlights and a sloped nose. As the story goes, NASCAR made a rule change in 1970 requiring 3,000 of the vehicles to be produced, which was substantially more than the 500 units required by the previous rule. One of the three prototypes ever built - and the only one built with the Boss 429 engine - is now for sale on eBay with a starting bid of $500,000. With a little more than three days left on the auction there are still no bids, but in the grand scheme of things this seems like a relatively fair price for a rare piece of automobile and racing history.
eBay Find of the Day: 1970 Ford Torino King Cobra prototype originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 08 May 2013 15:44:00 EST.

As the story goes, it was United States GIs, stationed in Great Britain during World War II, who first fell in love with the MG marque. There they saw, drove and were smitten by the MG T-Series roadsters. After the war, thousands of enthusiasts drove and raced cars like this 1948 MG TC here in the US - no less than Formula One's Phil Hill and the late Dean of Automotive Journalism, David E. Davis, Jr., found the cars to be willing companions.

So you can rest assured, at least, that if you were to pick up this very excellent MG example from eBay Motors, you'll be in excellent company.

By the looks of things, you'll have an excellent little British sports car, too. This particular TC has been fortified with a "Mirage Garage" supercharger, likely bumping up the very modest original output of the 1.3-liter four-cylinder from 45 horsepower to close to 70 hp. The current owner has also installed a five-speed Ford gearbox, likely making this TC quiet drivable by modern standards. The tan paint stripe down the side of the body, along with the non-stock internals will likely exclude the '48 from the love of concours judges, but driving is more fun than parking on grass, anyway.

An ambious asking price of $79,999 (or best offer) will scare away the faint of heart, but for those well-heeled and looking for a classic weekend diversion, you could do far worse.
eBay Find of the Day: Supercharged MG TC with five-speed originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 25 Apr 2013 08:00:00 EST.
Hagerty Insurance seems to think vintage SUVs are going to be the next big trend in car collecting. The agency has already seen prices begin to tick upward at auction, with the number of classic SUVs insured by the company growing some 65 percent since 2008. That's about twice the pace of the overall market. All told, Toyota Land Cruisers have seen the largest jump with a swell of 202 percent, though 1970s and 1980s Jeep models are up by a more than respectable 93 percent as well. Likewise, Ford Bronco and International Scout SUVs are up by 86 and 85 percent, respectively.

Hagerty attributes the increase with the overall rise in the popularity of the SUV in general. As modern machines become more in vogue, so do their predecessors by extension. While these old bruisers haven't spent much time in the lime light at classic car auctions, Hagerty says recent events in Scottsdale featured 11 vintage Toyota Land Cruiser models, one of which sold for $88,000. That's quite a price for a 1981 FJ-40.
Barrett-Jackson auctioned off the first production 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Convertible in Palm Beach this evening, with the open-top two-seater commanding a huge winning bid of $1,000,000 from Rick Hendrick, owner of NASCAR team Hendrick Motorsports.

While the Geneva Motor Show C7 prototype is pictured above (it also was shown at Barrett-Jackson), Hendrick won rights to the first retail production model (VIN undetermined at this time), allowing him to choose both color and options before his V8 sports car rolls off the assembly line in the near future. Hopefully, by the time that happens, we will all know more about its soft convertible top, double-bubble tonneau and the mechanism that opens and lowers the fully automatic roof at speeds upwards of 30 mph.

It is worth mentioning that proceeds from the sale of this first C7 droptop will benefit the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer institute, one of 40 National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer centers in the United States that strives to prevent, detect and eradicate all forms of cancer. The General Motors Foundation is a longtime supporter of Karmanos, with nearly $6 million in support over the last 15 years.
First production 2014 Corvette Stingray Convertible auctioned for a cool million originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 05 Apr 2013 21:24:00 EST.
You'll get to keep your Car Guy membership card even if you haven't heard of Glenfrome of England. The company was founded in the 1970s and made some noise in the 1980s with rebodied Land Rover Range Rover creations that were, to be charitable, weird as hell. The mid-Eighties marked out a high-water point for the coachbuilders, as Glenfrome turned out six-door limos, open-backed and stair-equipped versions for reviewing military exercises (no kidding) and the utterly inscrutable Glenfrome Facet that you see before you.

Nothing makes sense about this eBay Motors listing for a 1987 Glenfrome Facet Convertible. Nothing. Its styling suggests the historically and biologically impossible progeny of a Lamborghini LM002, an Isuzu Amigo and a Volkswagen Schwimmwagen. Its pedigree suggests that it should be in the deepest reaches of some Saudi's car warehouse, not parked in a driveway in South Carolina. And its rose metallic paint over burgundy leather interior does not conceptually jive with the Desert Storm tribute on its spare tire cover. Based on the pictures here, we're guessing that the digital camera employed is from roughly the same vintage as the vehicle, too.

Rather than fight it, however, we've decided to treasure the uniqueness of finding this "Crown Prince of Saudi" Range Rover redo up for sale right here in the US. Though far from vouching for the provenance of the Facet, we suspect that this vehicle is so rare and weird that is must, almost certainly, be the real deal. Whether or not that likely validity makes it worth $52,000 (the current Buy It Now price on the listing) is another story entirely. Caveat Emptor.
eBay Find of the Day: 1987 Glenfrome Facet hides its Land Rover identity well originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 30 Mar 2013 17:00:00 EST.
Vintage Ferrari models show up on the auction circuit all the time, but few can match this particular '53 340/375 MM Berlinetta Competizione in terms of historical significance. Not only did the machine compete in the 1953 24 Hours of Le Mans, but this particular model managed to finish in second place before being disqualified for taking on extra brake fluid during a stop. More importantly, a total of three Formula One world champions have driven this car in competition at events like the Spa 24 Hours, Pescara 12 Hours and the Circuit of Guadeloupe.

The coolest part for us? Umberto Maglioli managed to set a public road stage record with this machine during the Carrera Panamericana by averaging 138 miles per hour over 223 miles. The effort was good enough to land the team a sixth place finish overall, and the record still stands to this day for any road stage anywhere. The 340/375 MM Berlinetta Competizione is up for auction in restored condition at the <strike>RM Auction event in Paris this week</strike> Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este in Cernobbio, Italy on May 25. Check out the full press release below for more information.
Continue reading Le Mans-raced 1953 Ferrari 340/375 MM headed to auction

Le Mans-raced 1953 Ferrari 340/375 MM headed to auction originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 09 Feb 2013 13:00:00 EST.
If you're still upset that you missed out on bringing home the $4.62 million 1966 Barris Batmobile, the internet may just have your redemption. Technically, the car created for the TV show wasn't the Caped Crusader's first ride. In the early '60s, All Star Dairies commissioned this machine to promote the company's Batman and Robin milk. The owner originally built the car between 1961 and 1963 using an Oldsmobile chassis (complete with a 350 V8) and a custom fiberglass body, and the dairy company approached the owner to lease it for two years to promote its comic-themed products. That makes this creation the world's first Batmobile, preceding the famous Barris machine by two years.

With wild fins, doors that actually slide into the bodywork and plenty of memorabilia from its illustrious past, the car is plenty cool. Unfortunately, the intervening four decades haven't exactly been kind to the vehicle, and it will need a full-on restoration. Right now there are four days left on the auction with an unanswered opening bid of $19,800. Check out the eBay Motors auction for more information.
eBay Find of the Day: The Batmobile before the first Batmobile originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 04 Feb 2013 18:29:00 EST.
The last car Steve McQueen ever drove in a movie is officially up for auction. The 1951 Chevrolet Styline DeLuxe Convertible you see above is now owned by none other than Rick Harrison of Pawn Stars fame, but once ferried McQueen around the set of his last film, 1980's The Hunter. That flick saw the Bullit star play a bumbling bounty hunter and didn't exactly set the box office on fire. McQueen bought the car after production wrapped, and four years later it sold at his estate sale at the Imperial Palace in Las Vegas.

Flash forward to 2003, and the convertible received a full restoration back to near-stock specifications. Hagerty Insurance estimates the car to be worth around $45,000 without the significant provenance. Given its ties to one of film's most popular gearheads, the old Chevrolet could fetch up to 10 times that when it goes under the gavel in Ft Luaderdale, Florida on March 22. You can head over to the Auctions America site for more information. You can also check out the trailer for The Hunter below.
Continue reading Steve McQueen's last movie car, now Pawn Stars-owned, up for auction [w/video]

Steve McQueen's last movie car, now Pawn Stars-owned, up for auction [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 03 Feb 2013 17:03:00 EST.
Although the vast majority of eyeballs were tuned to the madness at Barrett-Jackson this past weekend, that televised car auction wasn't the only high-dollar game in Arizona. RM Auctions brought its usual gaggle of exotic wares to the desert, and the car that came out on top sold for much more than Barrett-Jackson's highest sale, the Batmobile.
Coming out on top at RM last weekend was Lot 164, a 1960 Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta 'Competizione' that sold for a massive $8,140,000 - the buyer could've nearly bought two Barris Batmobiles for that chunk of change. Lot 122, a 1967 Shelby 427 'Semi-Competition' Cobra, stood at $2,007,500 in second place, just in front of Lot 145, a 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4, which sold for $1,842,500.

After all said and done, RM reported $36.4 million in sales. That's a record for RM in Arizona, even though the total number of lots for 2013 was reduced significantly. Eight machines cracked the million-dollar mark, and you can see all of them in the press release right down below or peruse all of the auction results here. But first, be sure to scroll through our high-res image gallery of live photos above.
Continue reading 1960 Ferrari 250 GT sells for over $8 million in record-setting RM auction weekend

1960 Ferrari 250 GT sells for over $8 million in record-setting RM auction weekend originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 22 Jan 2013 19:00:00 EST.
In case you happened to miss it, the 2013 edition the Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction in Scottsdale, Arizona, has come and gone. And, as usual, Autoblog was there in full force on the two biggest days of the event, Friday and Saturday.

Here are some of the most interesting statistics from the week-long event:

A total of 1,343 cars were sold

The $108,766,069 in gross sales is a 17% increase over 2012

 300,000 peak attendance

At $4.62 million, the 1966 Batmobile was the most expensive car sold

The first 2014 Corvette Stingray sent $1.1 million to charity

Each of the top 10 sales topped a million dollars

You can see the original Batmobile, the first 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray and GM CEO Dan Akerson's personal 1958 Corvette, along with all the other cars that we covered from Barrett-Jackson over the weekend, below. Enjoy!

It's always special when a classic concept car goes up for auction, and that was surely the case as this 1956 Chrysler Diablo Concept crossed the auction block at the 2013 Barrett-Jackson event with a top bid of $1,375,000.

Designed by the famed Virgil Exner Sr. in collaboration with Italian styling house Ghia, this show car is said to have been designed in a wind tunnel after being drawn by Exner himself. Underneath the beautiful bodywork lies the chassis of a 1956 Chrysler 300, fitted with a 392-cubic-inch V8 engine with dual four-barrel carbs.

You may have a hard time telling from the live image gallery above, but this machine measures just under 21 feet long. That's classic Americana with Italian flair. Read the official auction description and watch a video of the Diablo Concept crossing the auction block below.
Continue reading 1956 Chrysler Diablo Concept dances with the devil for $1.375 million at Barrett-Jackson [w/video]

1956 Chrysler Diablo Concept dances with the devil for $1.375 million at Barrett-Jackson [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 20 Jan 2013 01:00:00 EST.
Despite some truly impassioned pleading from Jay Leno himself - including calling on Arizona's notoriously Republican-rich voters to beat the $600,000 level set the last time Leno sold a vehicle for this particular charity... in California - bidding for George Bush's 2009 Ford F-150 pickup truck stalled at $300,000.

All proceeds will be sent to the Fisher House Foundation, so at least it's $300K going to a good cause. Feel free to check out the live image gallery above, which includes shots showing Leno's skills helming the auction, and read through the official auction description below.

If you're not familiar with the Talbot-Lago brand, well... you're not alone. Born out of the collapsed Sunbeam-Talbot-Darracq by an engineer named Antonio Lago, who turned the automaker into a strong competitor in racing. The machine you see above, hailing from 1947, is based on the short-wheelbase chassis used for racing with bodywork designed by Franay.

Suffice it to say, this is a very rare machine, powered by a high-performance 4.5-liter six-cylinder engine with three carburetors mated to a four-speed manual gearbox. Apparently the car was found languishing in Tennessee in 1988, and a thorough restoration was completed in 2004. After all was said and done at Barrett-Jackson, the car's new owner found himself $2,035,000 lighter in the wallet.

See it in all its glory in our high-res image gallery above, and read through the auction description below.
Continue reading 1947 Talbot-Lago T-26 Grand Sport passes $2 million mark at Barrett-Jackson

1947 Talbot-Lago T-26 Grand Sport passes $2 million mark at Barrett-Jackson originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 19 Jan 2013 23:55:00 EST.
Barrett-Jackson has a long and storied history with the Chevrolet Corvette. For instance, back in 2008, Chevrolet auctioned off the very first of its new Corvette ZR1, earning a cool million bucks, and just last year the first 2013 Corvette 427 Convertible crossed the auction block for $600,000.

For the 2013 event, Chevrolet brought along the very show car we all fawned over at the Detroit Auto Show - the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray. Bidders got to look at this car as they fought for the right to order the very first C7 that rolls off the showroom floor, and they'll get to pick the color and options. We figure it'll be loaded.

After it was all said and done, C7 Corvette numero uno sold for $1.1 million, with 100-percent of the proceeds going to benefit College for Creative Studies. Check out the car as it crossed the black carpet in high-res beauty above, and then read its official description below.

*UPDATE: You can now watch a video of the bidding action below!
Continue reading First production 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray draws $1.1 million bid for charity at Barrett-Jackson [UPDATE: w/video]

First production 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray draws $1.1 million bid for charity at Barrett-Jackson [UPDATE: w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 19 Jan 2013 23:20:00 EST.
Well, that was exciting. We just watched the original Batmobile sell for a shocking $4,620,000, after all fees have been assessed. That makes this the most expensive vehicle sold (so far) here at the 2013 Barrett-Jackson car auction. Impressive.

The Batmobile was joined on stage by George Barris himself, who had previously been the car's only owner. You can read all about the Batmobile here (and by scrolling down below for its official auction description), but what you really want to do is check out our high-res image gallery of the car crossing the auction block above. It was, to put it mildly, a mad house.
