Amazon dominates the online retail space by offering a massive selection, competitive prices and fast, affordable shipping--not to mention personalized ads that seem to know what you want before you even realize it. But one thing Amazon can't compete with is the immediacy of a brick and mortar location. After all, what could be faster than hopping in your car and driving to the store?
How close does the Terrafugia Transition come to fulfilling the Jetsonian promise of a flying car? To Terrafugia CEO Carl Dietrich's own admission, "we usually think of it more as an airplane that has the added capability of driving." Still, the Transition is unlike anything else in the sky or on the road, even if it's not exactly the futuristic flying car that Hanna-Barbera imagined back in the 1960s.
It's a car... It's a plane... It's the Terrafugia Transition! We catch up with the team behind the Terrafugia Transition flying car at EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wis. Terrafugia CEO Carl Dietrich explains this amazing feat of aeronautic and automotive engineering, then the Transition makes its first-ever public flight demonstration.
The Experimental Aircraft Association began sixty years ago as a flying club. "Because the planes we flew were modified or built from scratch, they were required to display an 'expirimental' placard where it could be seen on the door or cockpit," explains founder Paul Poberezny on the association's website. From that small group of individuals, the EAA has now grown to over 175,000 members and 1,000 branches internationally.
The idea of vehicle-to-vehicle communication, commonly known as V2V, isn't a new concept. Ford has already demonstrated how V2V can be a powerful tool in collision avoidance, but the automaker seeks to advance the technology further through an interstellar collaboration.
For a little over a year Tesla and SpaceX visionary Elon Musk has been talking about a revolutionary new way to travel called Hyperloop. Today he announced his designs in a 57-page document, ending months of speculation by the public and media alike.
In some ways, Erik Lindbergh may turn out to be as important to the evolution of aviation as his legendary grandfather, Charles.
He's a supporter of battery-powered flight, solar-powered flight, space tourism, and ultra-light aircraft that can be parked in our driveways and powered by renewable energy. Lindbergh's advocacy has already yielded some incredible results. We caught up with Lindbergh in Toronto, where he was the keynote speaker at a travel writer's conference, speaking about ideas th
SpaceX has taken another step towards privatized space travel by once again successfully launching and landing Grasshopper, a ten-story Vertical Takeoff Vertical Landing (VTVL) reusable rocket. The rocket flew to a height of 1066 feet, more than 200 feet higher than previous attempts. Though the test took place last month, SpaceX kept it under wraps until they released a video last week on their YouTube channel.
More than two months after beginning a cross-country journey, a solar-powered airplane has completed its ambitious trek across the skies of the United States without using a single drop of fuel. Solar Impulse, a Swiss-made aircraft and pioneer in green aviation, landed late Saturday night at JFK International Airport in New York, concluding a whirlwind trip that started on May 3 in San Francisco.
Google hopes to bring the internet to more people around the world through the use of high-altitude balloons, the internet services giant announced Saturday. Google says that two out of every three people on earth are without a reliable internet connection. Project Loon, developed by the company's "top secret" Google[x] lab, looks to solve that problem.
In the most bizarre interview we've seen since Space Ghost was cancelled, 'Office' star and SoulPancake founder Rainn Wilson tossed some thoughtful questions at Tesla CEO Elon Musk...in the back of a 70s-era van, while eating a chicken burger.
One of the most thrilling aspects of SpaceX's business plan is the reusability of their rockets. Earlier this week SpaceX CEO Elon Musk tweeted pictures and video of their Grasshopper rocket taking a brief test flight and landing. It's quite a spectacular sight to see.
Honda began studying small business jets in the late 1980s to gauge the potential growth opportunity of expanding into a different industry. After spending years developing, testing, and sourcing suppliers, Honda subsidiary Honda Aircraft Company has finally begun to manufacture the much anticipated HondaJet.
Just minutes from downtown Los Angeles you'll find NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), which houses some of the brightest minds in the world. It was this group that recently grabbed the world spotlight by successfully launching and landing the Mars Science Laboratory, which included the Mars Rover Curiosity.
