Top Recommended Wagons

As traffic proliferates and an increasing number of drivers become comfortable with the higher hip points provided by crossovers and traditional SUVs, the popularity of the station wagon – at least in the U.S. – continues to decline. There remains hope, however, that the segment enjoys a rebound. BMW continues to offer a 3-Series wagon, Audi has updated its A4 Allroad, Volkswagen has introduced a Golf-based Alltrack, and rumors that Porsche will build a wagon variant of its Panamera are persistent. And, of course, while vehicles like Subaru’s Outback and Crosstrek are often lumped with the crossover category, they are much closer in layout and function to traditional wagons than they are to the 2-box crossover. With the carlike driving experience of a sedan and similar practicality to a larger and (typically) thirstier crossover, wagons offer a compelling argument for a long term, satisfying ownership.

2016 Golf SportWagen

2016 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen

You might think that after driving a Dodge Challenger Hellcat during the week of the Woodward Dream Cruise, seven days with a diesel-powered Volkswagen Golf SportWagen would be a letdown. You know, like following a shot of Jack Daniels with a sippy cup of Metamucil. But it ended up being perfect timing. The SportWagen arrived on moving day, and I set about putting the longroof's hauling ability to the ultimate …

2016 Clubman

2016 MINI Clubman

UPDATE: After playing with the newly launched Clubman configurator, we've revised the as-tested estimate to what we think is a more accurate $40,250, based on how our Swedish tester was equipped. Mini had a good idea when it introduced the last-generation Clubman, offering a slightly bigger, more versatile vehicle, with its own unique styling traits. Sounds good, right? Well, as it turned out, that wasn't necessarily all for the best, and not because there was any problem with the car itself. Mini's fleshed out model range, which now includes both the all-wheel-drive, four-door Countryman and the new four-door Hardtop has …
