Review of 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
Had a 2001 Jetta GLX VR6 5 speed, loved that car, took car of the car. In 107,000 miles the car gave me only 1 problem the ignition pack. Unfortunalty somewhere after that the engine blew ************'t believe it. Now it runs but will never pass inspection and sputters and backfires constantly, dealership estimates repair in range of 7500-8k! As much as I love the Jetta and VW's in general, I can't trust them as 8.5 years is not even close to an acceptable car life for me, especially when I baby'ed that car. Just bought the Honda Civic hopefully have more luck with this one. Anyway I rated this a good overall since I would have been very happy with it for at least another 5-7 years. Hopefully you have better luck with yours.
Last VW purchase
I purchased my 2001 Jetta with 35,000 miles because of the look both externally and internally, as well as the smooth ride. Since then I have poured over $4,000 in repairs into this car. Numerous sensors failed, drive train issues, electronic issues with heated seats, mechanical problems with wipers and windows. I always had it repaired by VW dealers and the most disappointing was the repair of both front end tie rods. Almost $1,000.00 in repair work that only last 15,000 miles before they needed to be repaired again. This was normal city/hwy driving in a Metro area. AWFUL parts!! VW also over charges on hourly rates, almost $120.00/hr wher ei live. Will most likely never purchase a Volkswagen again.
Jetta 2001 summary after 116,000 miles
I bought my daughter (very careful driver) a 3 year old Jetta 2001, 4 cyl engine, in seemingly very good condition. End result: This was the very last VW in my family after at least 5 others before. Everything fails: catalytic converter at 58,000 miles; automatic transmission bearing after 80,000mls (known problem); both front door windows falling down when cables broke(known problem, needs a complete assembly with motor etc to fix!); oil pan drain thread too soft (oil pan change!); antenna seal rubber disintegrates leaking water in passenger room; ignition coil pack fails (known problem); head light seals leaking (foggy lights); dip stick plastic broken gives false oil level; arm rest adjust breaks easyly; engine now needs oil change after 2000 miles as oil level is otherwise too low; etc. You name it! Absolutely lousy parts quality with high spares prices. Repair cost so far north of $6,000. My advice: Ask an independent car repair shop before you buy.
