States Chris Ender of CBS, "The upcoming edition of `Survivor' has a full roster of advertisers across a wide range of categories and GM's position has been filled."

CBS would not state who was the new sponsor or if it was even another automaker. Ford Motor Co., Toyota Motor Corp., and all three American brands of DaimlerChrysler declined advertising on the show. Representatives from Honda Motor Co. stated the automaker does not comment on its advertising.

Related:
When Forbes compiled vehicles for its annual "Best Cars for College Students" list, they found only four vehicles qualified to meet its criteria of being affordable, safe, and reliable. Interestingly, the Honda Accord and the Toyota Camry, which they deemed the "standard" by which similar vehicles are measured, failed to make the list. According to Forbes, both did poorly on the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) tests, with the Accord receiving the lowest rating of "poor" for rear-crash protection and the Camry receiving a "marginal" rating in the same test.

So who are the fortunate foursome? They are:

Chevrolet Cobalt - $13,590

Ford Escape - $19,780

Honda Civic - $14,560

Hyundai Sonata - $17,195

How each vehicle scored in the IIHS safety test, Consumer Reports, and J.D. Power can be found on each slide. What do you think? A+ to Forbes on their choices? Or back to school for them? Seems like no one at Forbes even considered keg capacity, the degree to which a car's stereo can annoy neighbors, or maximum number of friends that can be squeezed in for a trip to Windsor.

Related:
Well, the automaker's parent company, Fuji Heavy Industries, has decided to put the kibosh on it and ordered a redesign.

According to spokesman David Rowley of Subaru, the grill will not be applied to the upcoming Liberty and Outback, which will debut in Australia in September. The upcoming Impreza, due out in 2007, will also be sporting a new proboscis. States Rowley, "It's fair to say the design will not appear on future Subarus. We had always said the aerospace theme could be applied in a variety of ways, like the way it's been presented on the Impreza and Tribeca."

Rowley would not state what the new design will be for future Subies. However, it will be based on work from (now ex-) Subaru chief designer Andreas Zapatinas. Zapatinas, as you may remember, had previously designed cars for both Alfa Romeo and Fiat.

[Source: CARSguide]
Subaru to pull a Jackson and undergo another nose job originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 28 Aug 2006 08:07:00 EST. Hyundai Motor Japan, which has been doing business in Tokyo since 2001, sells six models with its high-end Grandeur (Azera) costing a little over $29,000. However, states a salesperson, "It (Grandeur) does not pale in comparison with Japanese cars of the same class in terms of quality and equipment. But the price of the car is about 1 million yen ($8,547) less."

Quality products at low prices have also helped the automaker worldwide. According to Business Week, Hyundai Motors ranked third in global corporate brand value for 2006, just after Toyota and Honda but ahead of Nissan. South Korean auto exports to Nippon nearly quadrupled in the past ten years, as well. Hyundai alone hopes to double its sales in the country in 2006 and plans to increase its dealerships from 57 to 70 within three years.

[Source: Kyodo News via The Japan Times]

Deju vu: consumers buying low-priced, quality, Korean cars in Japan originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 26 Aug 2006 21:02:00 EST. According to a study by Kia Motor UK, 53 percent of drivers think they're the better half-in driving, that is, compared to their significant other (SO). Worse, nearly 20 percent would consider dumping or serving divorce papers if they felt their SO was too critical of their driving skills.

Kia Motor's recommendation? Based on the Concept A, the vehicle's unique name is based on the words "tiger" and "leguan", the latter German for iguana. The Tiguan concept will debut at the second Los Angeles autoshow later this year with the production version to be displayed next year at the 2007 Frankfurt show.
Traffic is reported to increase by as much as 20 percent during the before and after school rush hour, with residential roads seeing an increase in speed related offenses, as 70 percent of drivers blow past the prescribed speed limit.

Tips include:

Don't use the car. Consider biking, walking, or using public transportation.

Car pool. This will reduce the number of vehicles on the road.

Leave early for your destination. Many crashes are caused by drivers in a rush.

Stay within the speed limit. A driver moving at 35mph doubles their chances of killing a pedestrian versus driving at 30mph.

Don't block driveways or double park. Use the parking brake while children are entering or leaving the car.

When children are exiting the vehicle, make sure they exit onto the sidewalk, not the street.

Comments are open for additional safety tips as school begins in your area.

[Source: easier]

Driving safely when school is back in session originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 20 Aug 2006 17:08:00 EST. The retailer is selling T-shirts that proclaim in faded lettering: "My boyfriend bought me a Ford."

Personally, we find the words too generic. Shirts include the vehicle's name and trim such as "My boyfriend bought me a Ford F-150 Harley-Davidson" or "My boyfriend bought me a Ford GT." However, any boyfriend giving a shirt with the word "Freestar" on it should either be reevaluated as a possible marriage proposal or educated about SUVs.

Related:
Ford wants a female to win a NASCAR race
Ford GT designer Pardo seen fiddling with bikinis, wedding gowns
Esquire magazine picks its '10 Most Awesome Autos'
Mercury Milan: Not young mom friendly?
TCC's CarGirl on what 'Real Women' drive

[Source: Detroit News]
Ford's Targeted advertisement originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 20 Aug 2006 14:06:00 EST. That's what a friend of Mobile Magazine's Dave White is hoping. The International MXT-MVA (Military Vehicle - Armored) is a variant of the MXT 4X4 pickup. While heavily armored, the all-terrain vehicle is more than powerful enough to quickly move five "sumo-sized" occupants with its V-8 diesel engine which produces 300 horsepower and over 500 lb-ft of torque. The bed and body of the MXT-MVA can easily be configured to hold soldiers and their gear, heavy weaponry, communication and navigation systems.

The military plans to use the vehicle for a variety of duties that include, but certainly aren't limited to an ambulance detail, a field shelter, and convoy protection. Unfortunately for White's friend, there are currently no plans to build the MXT-MVA for civilian use.

Related:
Armored personnel carrier puts Germantown in state of readiness
Don't try this at home: SUV with remote-operated shotguns
When a Hummer just won't cut it, think Force Protection

[Source: Mobile Magazine via Gizmag]
MXT-MVA: HUMMER evolution squared? originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 17 Aug 2006 19:57:00 EST. ISA, which was developed by the Motor Industry Research Association and backed with funds from the U.K. Department for Transport (DfT), was demonstrated last week using a motorcycle. When the driver exceeds the posted speed limit, he or she will receive a two beep warning. Once their speed is 5 mph over the limit, the vehicle seat vibrates as another warning. If the second warning is disregarded, ISA takes over and slows the vehicle until it's at or below the speed limit.

Critics point out the system does not take into account when drivers accelerate out of dangerous situations. GM CEO Rick Wagoner stated in an interview that the automaker will begin to slow production of its full-size SUVs for the rest of the year. While he would not elaborate on what this 'slowdown' entailed, he mentioned that cutbacks would be made to "some" overtime at the company's plants while revamping their vehicle lineup to include other models.

According to Ward's, sales of large SUVs have dropped 22 percent from January through July of 2006.

Related:
By the Numbers: July 2006
U.S. Sales: SUVs and trucks drag down GM, Ford, Chrysler
Consumers think twice about SUVs

[Source: Wall Street Journal via Sun Sentinel]
GM to slow large SUV production originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 13 Aug 2006 14:09:00 EST. Both Acura and, recently, Cadillac have bundled such systems with their navigation packages, which gather their data via streaming traffic reports from detectors and cameras.

IntelliOne Technologies is currently testing 'Need4Speed,' a real-time traffic monitoring system that can gather data by tracking the movements of mobile phone users within their cars. The company is creatively using the phone's constant communication with cell towers to provide up-to-the-second traffic conditions.

According to the company, Need4Speed is more accurate than current systems, refreshing every second and proving to be accurate within 3 miles. When asked about possible privacy issues, IntelliOne states that any personal ID's from the phones are removed from its system.

An innovative way to track traffic? Or a violation or privacy? Comments are open.

[Source: Fox News]
Mobile phone to provides real-time traffic reports originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 13 Aug 2006 11:53:00 EST. Well, several Ferrari owners learned that yielding to temptation does not exempt them from the law. According to sibling blog Luxist, several participants of the "Ferrari Challenge Rally: The Rally of Northern Oregon" were cited by police for excessive speed. How excessive? While many drivers were gunning their luxomobiles between 80 and 98 miles per hour, one driver, Bruce L. Jamison of Houston, Texas, was cited going 123 mph in a 55 mph zone.

Ah, the perils of wealth.

[Source: KTVZ via Luxist]
Ferrari drivers cited for yielding to speed temptation originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 12 Aug 2006 20:01:00 EST.
