The electric DeLorean DMC-12 is coming 2013, so says Humble, Texas' reborn DeLorean Motor Company. That was the shocking announcement made by DeLorean in mid-October at the DMC Texas Open House.

But what else occurred on that mid-October day? Well, apparently a handful of DeLorean enthusiasts got to test drive DMC's electric prototype. Now, we can't say for certain whether this clip shows DMC's own electric version of the DMC-12 or the work of some shadetree mechanic, but we can say with confidence that DMC's Cameron Wynne (son of Stephen Wynne, owner of DeLorean) is the one who is driving the electric vehicle around the track.

Dubbed the DMCEV-12, DeLorean claims this electric time machine hits 60 miles per hour in a quick 4.9 seconds and warps to a top speed of 125 mph, though we'll have to wait to hear more about total range. Reports suggest the limited production DMCEV-12 will retail for approximately $100,000.

Nissan has released details on its latest trio of safety-related technologies designed to reduce fatal and serious injuries caused by collisions.

Nissan's "Acceleration Suppression for Pedal Misapplication" technology works to mitigate collisions in confined areas by detecting whether or not the driver actually intended to step on the accelerator pedal. This system relies on four Around View Monitors that detect nearby objects and limit the response of the accelerator pedal if necessary

Next in line is Nissan's "Multi-Sensing System with Rear Camera." This technology again uses the automaker's Around View Monitors to detect pedestrians, vehicles and road conditions to alert drivers of collision risks. This system features blind-spot warning, moving-object detection and lane-departure warning and will be installed in select models beginning in 2012.

Last, but certainly not least, is Nissan's "Predictive Forward Collision Warning System." This advanced bit of tech works to prevent pileup accidents resulting from the rapid deceleration of vehicles. A sensor determines the velocity of the vehicle in front and responds, if needed, by audibly warning the driver of a looming collision and by tensioning the seat belts.

Safety, it seems, is paramount, with most all automakers rightfully investing heavily in gadgets and tech designed to keep drivers, well, driving. See the full press release worth of details after the break.
Continue reading Nissan details three upcoming safety technologies

Nissan details three upcoming safety technologies originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 14 Oct 2011 09:30:00 EST.
Japanese automaker Honda may not have stolen the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show, but Honda did use the stage to present some of its greener prototypes, most notably, its EV Concept.

Still without a proper name, the Honda EV Concept is designed to meet the daily driving needs of the average commuter and utilizes the same five-passenger layout found in the popular Honda <strike>Jazz</strike> Fit.

When the production version of the Honda EV Concept hits the streets in 2012, it will be powered by a lithium-ion battery and coaxial electric motor. The motor, derived from the unit found in the FCX Clarity fuel cell car, is efficient and powerful while remaining quiet at highway speeds (top speed is listed at 90 miles per hour), according to Honda.

Honda says the EV Concept will achieve an estimated 100-mile driving range per charge using the EPA's LA4 city cycle and claims that range can be maximized by use of an innovative three-mode electric drive system adapted from the Honda CR-Z.

There's still no word on pricing for the Honda EV Concept and the Japanese automaker remains mum on the vehicle's rollout schedule. However, we'd assume Honda will follow the lead of most other automakers by launching the electric Fit in select states in 2012 ahead of a nationwide rollout a year or so later.
Continue reading Honda releases more details on Fit electric concept

Honda releases more details on Fit electric concept originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 20 Sep 2011 10:29:00 EST.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has just announced a safety recall affecting 69,590 model year 2011 Subaru Legacy and Outback vehicles. The recall concerns adhesive, or a possible lack thereof, used to affix moonroof glass to its retainer. This action covers 2011 Legacy and Outback models manufactured from August 3, 2010, through July 1, 2011.

NHTSA says an inadequate amount of adhesive on the moonroofs of affected models could allow the glass to loosen or even detach while the vehicle is in motion. This flying glass, says the agency, could become a road hazard and possibly even lead to a crash.

Subaru will contact owners of affected Legacy and Outback models in October and says its dealers will inspect the adhesive and, if necessary, apply more of the sticky substance to ensure the glass doesn't detach. As is always the case with a federal recall, dealers will inspect and repair components free of charge, and owners are urged to contact Subaru for more info.
The adorable Fiat 500 continues to be a sales superstar in various countries across the globe, which has made its Punto sibling feel a bit left out. But Fiat is determined to keep the Punto fresh and has done some tweaking to the 2012 model that debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

First launched in 2005 as the Grande Punto, the third-generation hatchback had began to show its age. To combat this, Fiat launched the reworked Punto Evo in 2009, but now even that update isn't selling.

On the 2012 Punto, Fiat turned back the clock a bit by stripping the hatchback of the black plastic moldings that once surrounded the Punto's wheel arches and nixed are some of the chrome bits that made the third-gen hatch seem a bit dated.

Now, the Punto is simple, stylish and nearly as fuel-efficient as hatchbacks come. The 2012 Punto gets two fuel-sipping 85-horsepower engines - one a 900-cc two-cylinder motor and the other a 1.3-liter MultiJet diesel. Fiat says MultiJet-equipped Puntos return a shocking 69 mpg on Europe's combined test cycle.

The revised model debuted alongside the 2012 Panda and a trio of Abarths in Frankfurt.
Fiat has given its completely redesigned Panda - only the third in the model's 31-year history - its international debut at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show.

The Italian automaker describes the five-seat 2012 Panda as "compact but capable" and says the third-generation high-riding city car is more stylish and sips far less fuel than the outgoing Panda.

Measuring in with a total length of less than 144 inches, the redesigned Panda is ever-so slightly longer than the 2011 model. However, the added length means the 2012 Panda sports one of the most spacious boots in the city car segment.

It's likely all four of the available engine options will make their way into Pandas sold throughout Europe. These choices consist of 64- and 83-horsepower turbocharged versions of Fiat's two-cylinder 900-cc TwinAir gas engine, plus a more conventional (and cheaper) 68-hp 1.2-liter gas engine and a 74-hp 1.3-liter turbodiesel.

Efficiency is the name of the game here, with stop-start technology likely to feature heavily across the 2012 Panda lineup. Fiat says the revised 1.3-liter MultiJet II diesel - now with start-stop and intelligent alternator control - is the most efficient of the bunch with CO2 emissions listed at just 90 g/km. That roughly equates to 69 miles per gallon on Europe's combined test cycle.

The spotlight at the Peugeot stand here in Frankfurt was directed on one limited edition Peugeot 508 RXH and the French automaker's HX1 concept. But alongside the copper-colored crossover and sleek MPV was the less-exclusive, non-limited version of the 508 RXH.

Peugeot says all 508 RXH crossovers feature the automaker's through-the-road HYbrid4 technology, which employs a 163-horsepower 2.0-liter HDi diesel engine to drive the front wheels and a 37-hp electric motor to spin the rears. Combined, the diesel-electric hybrid drive unit delivers up to 200 horsepower and cranks out 332 pound-feet of torque.

The 508 RXH is capable of electric-only operation, though Peugeot has not yet revealed the crossover's "zero-emissions" range. The automaker says the 508 RXH is quite the fuel-sipper, consuming less than 4.2 liters of diesel per 100 kilometers (56 miles per gallon U.S.) on the combined cycle. Meanwhile, the diesel hybrid emits only 109 g/km of CO2.

The 508 RXH will go on sale in spring of 2012 and Peugeot says its HYbrid4 technology will be added to more vehicles in the near future. Follow the jump for full details on the diesel-sipping 508 and check out live pics in our high-res gallery.
Continue reading Peugeot 508 RXH hybrid crossover sips down diesel, gets 56 mpg

Peugeot 508 RXH hybrid crossover sips down diesel, gets 56 mpg originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 15 Sep 2011 08:32:00 EST.
Barely altered from the concept that wowed crowds at the Geneva Motor Show is the 2012 Zafira Tourer revealed by Opel in Frankfurt.

The Zafira Tourer is still a sleek, seven-passenger MPV and perhaps one of only a few lookers in its class. Priced at £21,000 in its most basic guise, the 2012 Zafira Tourer undercuts even the cheapest Ford S-Max by more than £1,200.

All Tourer models come well equipped, with air-conditioning, cruise control, six airbags and active headrests as standard. The Zafira's Flex7 seating arrangement has evolved and, at the press of a button, adjusts seating to accommodate four, five or seven passengers.

Engine choices include a turbo'd 1.4-liter gasser, a 2.0-liter CDTi diesel, including a ecoFlex version, and a 1.8-liter gasoline burner. With its most frugal engine - the 2.0-liter ecoFLEX diesel - the Zafira Tourer emits only 119 grams per kilometer of CO2, roughly equal to 44 miles per gallon U.S.

Opel says the Zafira Tourer's order books will open on November 1 and that deliveries will commence early next year. See the sleek MPV for yourself in the attached high-res image gallery and get the details in the official release after the jump.
Continue reading 2012 Opel Zafira Tourer seats 7, returns up to 44 mpg

2012 Opel Zafira Tourer seats 7, returns up to 44 mpg originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 15 Sep 2011 07:58:00 EST.
At the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show, Toyota peeled back the sheets to finally reveal its 2012 Prius Plug-in production model.

Toyota describes the plug-in hybrid as the "greenest, most technically advanced Prius yet," and with an electric-only driving range of 14.3 miles, fuel consumption targeted at 112 miles per gallon equivalent and CO2 emissions listed at 49 grams per kilometer, we're inclined to agree with the Japanese automaker's bluster.

Unlike currently available Prius hatchbacks, the plug-in version is rechargeable using an electrical connection, rather than only from electricity generated while the vehicle is in motion. Toyota says that after the Prius Plug-in's 4.4-kWh lithium-ion battery pack is depleted, the vehicle seamlessly switches to hybrid mode. The Prius Plug-in can be fully recharged in less than 1.5 hours.

On the performance front, the plug-in Prius cranks out 134 horsepower, which Toyota says is sufficient to propel the hybrid hatch from nought to 62 miles per hour in a leisurely 10.7 seconds and onward to a top speed of 112 mph.

Toyota says sales of the Prius Plug-in will start in early 2012 - mainly in Japan, the U.S and Europe - and anticipates annual volume of 50,000 units. The Japanese automaker has yet to announce pricing for the 2012 plug-in, but some reports claim the automaker is targeting a sub-$30,000 price tag.

Under design guru Gilles Vidal, Peugeot is starting to show off its an adventurous maturity, as seen in the HX1 six-seat concept revealed today at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show.

Powered by the Peugeot's through-the-road HYbrid4 technology and using a 2.2-liter HDi diesel instead of the automaker's 2.0-liter oil burner, the HX1 combines good power - 299 bhp - with astonishingly low fuel consumption of 73.5 miles per gallon equivalent (U.S.) and CO2 emissions of only 83 grams per kilometer. And with its plug-in capability, Peugeot says the HX1 features a useful electric-only range of 18.6 miles.

Design-wise, the HX1 concept features a windscreen pulled so far to the front that it's more "cab-in-the-next-country" than "cab forward." Add in a quartet of unusual scissor doors and the HX1 takes most elements that make up a typical MPV and, well, reinvents them.

What's truly ingenious in the HX1 are its second-row seats, which literally pull right out of the back side of the front seats.

Outside, trick aerodynamic elements deploy at speed, off the rear of the HX1 and from the wheels. Follow the jump for more details on the HX1 including a video, then check out the concept's wizardry in our high-res image gallery.
Continue reading Peugeot HX1 concept is one unusually sleek plug-in MPV [w/video]

Peugeot HX1 concept is one unusually sleek plug-in MPV [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 14 Sep 2011 14:00:00 EST.
The German aftermarket specialists at Brabus have entered the eco battle with the unveiling of a prototype EV based on the Mercedes-Benz E-Class at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show. Rather than extracting more power out of the E-Class' gasoline engine, Brabus decided to rip out the gasser and replace it with electric-only hardware.

The prototype gets a suitably subtle and sexy name - the High Performance 4WD Full Electric - with "Performance" referring to the E's impressive 429 horsepower and 2,360 pound-feet of torque and "4WD" implying each wheel is fitted with a Protean electric motor. Lastly, Brabus' prototype packs a monstrous 56-kWh lithium-ion battery pack to provide the juice.

The HP4FE is capable of scooting from 0 to 62 miles per hour in 6.9 seconds and can keep on blasting on down the road for up to 217 miles (at a constant speed of 62 mph) before that massive battery pack becomes fully depleted. Brabus says the prototype tops out at 137 mph in Sport mode, or 118 mph in Eco mode.

But being a Brabus, exterior enhancements are a must and besides its slightly modified body, the prototype E-Class sits on 19-inch wheels wrapped in performance rubber. As for price, Brabus says the prototype isn't for sale... yet. Follow the jump for full details on this torque-laden electric machine.
Continue reading Brabus reveals prototype High Performance 4WD Full Electric E-Class

Brabus reveals prototype High Performance 4WD Full Electric E-Class originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 14 Sep 2011 08:59:00 EST.
Combining performance, luxury, style, utility and economy with an enduring concern for the sustainable use of resources, the Fisker Surf is a treehugger's dream machine. That basically sums up the Fisker's station wagon, which was unveiled today at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show.

The Surf is Fisker's vision of a plug-in hybrid that slots in between a sedan and crossover and shows how Fisker is expected to expand on it its Karma platform with additional models that fill a niche.

If you see a bit of Ferrari FF in the Surf, that's apparently intentional, as Fisker execs have already been quoted as saying, "The shape is a bit like a Ferrari FF. But with four doors!" And, as Fisker says, the Surf will check in at around one-third the price of Ferrari's shooting brake. Neat as it is, we don't see a lot of cross-shopping going on here, do you?

Despite increased quantities of glass and bodywork, Fisker says the Surf weighs just 66 pounds more than the Karma sedan, but the real bonus comes in terms of cargo space, which grows from inadequate to almost acceptable. Fisker says the Surf will launch in 2013 and we're guessing that its price tag will be a bit above $100,000.

In other news, Fisker has confirmed a new partner in wheelmakers Claus Ettensberger Corporation, who will provide various alloy wheel patterns and "aerodynamic components" as optional extras for the Karma's newly formed Reserve program.
Next to all the major automakers debuting vehicles at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show is a lesser-known firm from Russia that operates under the curious name of Yo-Auto (ë-Avto).

The quirky Yo-Concept, unveiled today in Frankfurt, is one of four hybrid vehicles the Russian automaker is reportedly working on. And even though the Yo-Concept is not destined for production, execs say this unique concept previews the company's stylings and that it will function as a design model for all of Yo-Auto's future vehicles.

The Yo-Concept reportedly features some sort of extended-range setup similar to the gas-electric plug-in system that powers the Chevrolet Volt. Of course, the Yo-Concept's trickest feature has to be its novel curved doors that slide up and to the rear of the vehicle. German automaker Volkwagen is recalling 30,294 of its 2011-2012 model year Jetta sedans for tailpipe finishers that extend beyond the vehicle's rear bumper.

On certain Jettas, stainless steel exhaust tips - sold at the point-of-purchase and installed at port during importation - may extend beyond the original length of the factory-installed exhaust pipes, a situation that could result in burns if bumped or touched while hot.

VW will notify owners of affected Jetta models by the end of November and says that dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the stainless tips with updated versions. Owners are urged to contact Volkswagen for additional info.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has just announced a safety recall covering
295,123 vehicles, a pair of Subaru models and a close relative from Saab. The recall concerns front control arms that may fail if corroded, making the vehicle difficult to control. The action covers select 2003-2008 Forester crossovers, 2002-2007 Impreza models and some 2005-2006 Saab 9-2x hatchbacks, the latter heavily based on Subaru mechanicals.

In April, NHTSA launched an investigation after receiving seven complaints from owners of affected vehicles. In two instances, owners reported losing control of their vehicle due to control arm failure. The agency's investigation revealed the front lower control arms may break at the hanger brackets due to corrosion if exposed to salt or humid environments.

This is a geographic recall, meaning that Subaru will inspect the degree of corrosion and either replace or rustproof the control arms on vehicles registered for use in the District of Columbia, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Wisconsin, Connecticut, Delaware, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Maine, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, Ohio, Rhode Island and West Virginia.

Saab dealers will be responsible to inspect and repair affected 9-2x models as necessary, including the possible rustproofing or replacement of control arms. Owners who think that their vehicle may be covered under the recall are urged to contact their dealer.
Continue reading Subaru Forester, Impreza and Saab 9-2X recalled over control arm corrosion

Subaru Forester, Impreza and Saab 9-2X recalled over control arm corrosion originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 12 Sep 2011 17:32:00 EST. Honda Motor Co. is recalling nearly 347,000 examples of its Pilot crossovers worldwide for a potential issue with the front seatbelts.

Honda says the recall, which affects 2009-2011 model year Pilot models built in Alabama, is "due to a manufacturing error on a small number of front seat belts, where the stitching connecting the lap section of the belt to the outboard anchor webbing may be incomplete or missing." The affected seatbelts could disconnect from the anchor webbing in an accident, increasing the risk of an injury.

Honda will contact Pilot owners in early October and will inspect the stitching on front seatbelts of the recalled vehicles. Assemblies will be replaced free of charge if Honda deems them to be defective. Honda says almost 311,000 of the recalled Pilot models are registered in the U.S., 10,000 in Canada, 8,000 in Mexico and the rest in other countries.
Japanese automaker Subaru has issued a recall for Model Year 2010-2011 Outback and Legacy vehicles manufactured from January 7, 2010, through May 20, 2011. Subaru says faulty components inside the wiper motor's bottom cover could overheat.

According to Subaru, if the motor's bottom cover overheats, the windshield wipers may no longer function, which could lead to reduced visibility and increase the chance of a crash.

Subaru will notify owners of the 195,080 affected Outback and Legacy vehicles by the end of November. As is typically the case, dealers will replace defective components free of charge and owners are urged to contact Subaru for more info.
Continue reading Subaru recalls 2010-2011 Legacy, Outback for windshield wiper issue

Subaru recalls 2010-2011 Legacy, Outback for windshield wiper issue originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 12 Sep 2011 08:30:00 EST.
Tata, India's leading maker of trucks and buses, and owner of Jaguar and Land Rover, says Forster resigned due to "unavoidable personal circumstances," but will remain a non-executive member of Tata Motors' board. Forster stated:

I deeply regret that my personal circumstances make it difficult for me to continue to perform the challenging duties of managing the thriving global activities of the Tata Motors Group with its main activities in India and the UK and increasingly in additional overseas markets.

Forster's departure comes as Tata Motors continues its lengthy search for a successor to Ratan Tata, who is set to retire soon as chairman of the sprawling conglomerate. Forster joined Tata in February 2010 after leaving Opel, with his focus on turning around the then-struggling Jaguar-Land Rover division. Tata Motors is currently seeking Forster's replacement.
Continue reading Tata CEO Forster steps down after only 18 months

Tata CEO Forster steps down after only 18 months originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 12 Sep 2011 07:59:00 EST.
In a move that truly shows how entwined Fiat and Chrysler have become, the Italian automaker, along with its U.S. sidekick Chrysler, confirmed today the launch a Ram-badged version of the Fiat Doblo van in the U.S.

The Chrysler Group has not released photos or specifications for the Ram-badged Doblo, but says the van will be imported from Turkey as it will be built by Fiat Group's Turkish joint-venture partner TOFAS. Chrysler adds that TOFAS will invest over $160 million for the necessary U.S. and Canadian homologation of the front-wheel-drive work van. TOFAS will set aside some of that cash to cover any North American, customer-specific modifications for the Doblo.

Chrysler says the seven-year deal with TOFAS calls for 190,000 Doblos to be shipped to North America. Look for the first Ram-badged Doblos to hit dealer showrooms in early 2013.
Continue reading Fiat Doblo headed to U.S. as rebadged Ram in 2013

Fiat Doblo headed to U.S. as rebadged Ram in 2013 originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 09 Sep 2011 17:40:00 EST.
Porsche has announced a recall for certain Model Year 2011-2012 Boxster, Cayman and 911 models for seatbeat anchor plate issues that could increase the risk of injury during a crash.

Porsche says there's a possibility that affected models have undersized anchor plate mounting holes, which could restrict the plate from rotating as intended and may result in the seatbelt not being "routed optimally around the occupant." Over time, the anchor plate could loosen, causing the seatbelt to not function as intended.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that 235 Porsche Boxster, Cayman and 911 models could potentially be affected by this recall. More specifically, the anchor plate issue affects model year 2011 911 Speedster and 911 GTS RS 4.0; and model year 2012 Boxster (including S and Spyder); Cayman (including S and R); 911 Carrera (including S, GTS, 4, 4S, and 4 GTS); 911 Targa 4 and Targa 4S; and 911 Turbo and Turbo S manufactured from May 31, 2011 through June 10, 2011.

Porsche dealers will inspect vehicles to ensure the anchor plate mounting hole is sized correctly and make any necessary repairs or modifcations free of charge.
