Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick (D) is said to be considering adjusting registration fees skyward for large, gas-guzzling vehicles while discounting the same for fuel-saving models. The controversial legislation has earned the nickname "Hummer Tax" since it is rather obviously geared towards large SUVs like those sold by GM's struggling HUMMER division.

Is there anything in this world that billionaire Richard Branson isn't interested in? The British tycoon already has over 360 ventures under the control his Virgin Group, and he may soon add another. According to an unnamed spokesperson for Honda, Branson is in discussions, along with other unknown interested parties, to purchase the erstwhile Formula 1 team that was formerly part of a factory-backed effort from the Japanese automaker.

How does GM prove to the U.S. government that it can be a viable company again? By ditching high-performance vehicles. In the Viability Plan/$16.6 billion request submitted to Congress this week, GM said it would focus on eco-friendly cars and hyped up the Volt in many ways. The flipside of this is that GM's High Performance Vehicle Operations team was disbanded. That means that development of cars like the low-volume Chevrolet Cobalt SS (above), the HHR SS and the V-series Caddies have been sto

Since its founding in 1919 as The School for Automotive Trades, Kettering University in Flint, Michigan has had deep ties with General Motors. In fact, the University was acquired in 1926 by GM and renamed General Motors Institute of Technology. Since then, the automaker has used the school as a playground to train young engineers and managers. That long history may now be in danger as The General, facing hardships on a scale never before seen, has separated itself from 103 students that had pre

One definition of the word elegant is "to be gracefully concise and simple." In the future, the dictionary just might include the GreenWheel as a product that illustrates this principle perfectly. From the MIT Smartcities team that gave us the stackable cars concept and the RoboScooter (still a go), comes a wheel that can turn an ordinary bicycle into a very desirable electric one in an easy, cost effective manner. Enclosing a motor, A123 Systems batteries and a generator into a small aluminum p

Sources suggest that General Motors is readying the Opel Ampera for an expected debut at the Geneva Motor Show next month. The Ampera will be the first production vehicle in Europe using the Voltec powertrain that should make its first appearance in the Chevy Volt in 2010. We got an early sneak peek at the general shape of the Ampera earlier this week from the European Office for Harmonization of the Internal Market, aka the patent office. Now, some sleuthy spy shooters in Germany have managed t

The Ford F-Series Super Duty just came in for a refresh last year, but the full-size heavy duty truck segment is so competitive that work never really stops in the pickup studio. The brawny Blue Oval workhorse will get rhinoplasty for 2011, and like the current models, its new styling takes inspiration from a concept vehicle.

China's largest independent automaker, Chery, has "unveiled" their first electric car. Called the S18, the small 4 door appears to be the a battery-operated version of the S18/QQ2 first shown to the world at last year's Beijing Auto Show. The in-house design features lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries with enough range to roll up to 150 km (93 miles), while its 336 volt system can allow the 40 kW (53.64 hp) motor to take it up to the dizzying speed of 120 kph (75 mph). Plugged into a 220

Argentina's most important motorbike manufacturer, Zanella, has announced its first factory-installed CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) powered bike. The bike, which is a converted RX150 model, has 150 cc displacement and the conversion adds two tanks of gas for a range of approximately 200 kilometers (120 miles). The tanks can store 1.4 m3 of natural gas and are located in the same place as the fuel tank. Interestingly, a small reservoir that holds 3.5 liters of gasoline remains on board for emergen

Is the rumored little roadster from BMW on track for a 2011 debut? Auto Motor und Sport seems to think so. They even have a rendering by renowned artist Mark Stehrenberger to prove it. If we are to believe the rumors, the BMW Z2 should be closer to what the original Z3 was. That is, more of an entry level roadster to compete with the premium versions of the Mazda MX-5, compared to the more upscale Z4 that just debuted, which is more of a Porsche Boxster rival.
