Alliance AutoGas specializes in both converting regular light-duty vehicles to run on propane, or compressed natural gas (CNG), and then supplying that fuel. Clever, no? The company is now looking for the state of California to approve its work on Ford Transit utility vehicles. Alliance said Wednesday that it's pursuing certification from the California Air Resources Board (CARB). Such a blessing from that regulator is big because the Golden State has by far the most vehicles of any US state.

Alliance is a division of Blossman Gas Inc., the country's biggest privately-owned propane company, so it's not stranger to lobbying for all things propane. In this case, the company, citing Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) testing, says propane provides a 13-percent reduction in CO2 and a 33-percent reduction in methane emissions. Alliance has made more than more than 7,400 conversions and offers a five-year, 100,000-mile warranty on such kits.

This is not the first time this year a Ford vehicle has been subject talk of propane conversions. This spring, Ford started offering kits that coverts F-150 pickup trucks equipped with 5.0-liter V8 engines to also run on propane. The conversion costs between about $7,500 and $9,500 per vehicle, including uplifting fuel tanks, fuel lines and injectors.

Last month, NGT News reported that a recent six-year highway funding bill includes a provision in which the Environmental Protection Agency would make CNG-powered vehicles eligible for federal tax credits for $2,500 to $7,500 i.e. along the lines of incentives provided to plug-in vehicles. Meantime, take a look at Alliance AutoGas's press release below.

Notes to Editor

ž Autogas (also known as propane autogas, liquefied petroleum gas or LP gas), is a derivative of two large energy industries: natural gas processing and crude oil refining. It is used across the world as a source of energy for heating, cooking and vehicles.

ž Autogas can be transported, stored, and used virtually anywhere in the world. It does not require a fixed network and will not deteriorate over time.

ž Autogas is very clean burning and has lower greenhouse gas emissions than any other fossil fuel when measured on a total fuel cycle.

ž Autogas can be accessible to everyone everywhere today without major infrastructure investment. Nothing needs to be invented and there are enough reserves to last many decades.

ž Autogas is cost-effective, since a high proportion of its energy content is converted into heat and it can be up to five times more efficient than traditional fuels, resulting in less energy wastage and better use of our planet's resources.

ž Autogas is a multi-purpose energy. There are more than a thousand applications, from cooking, heating, and transportation, to agricultural grain drying, and powering lawn mowers and fork lift trucks.
