Chewbacca arrested for driving Darth Vadar to polls in Ukraine
The man dressed in a full Darth Vader costume claimed the arrest was invalid since Chewy was his pet and servant and so did not need papers to vote. The Odessa police immortalized the moment on their official Instagram page, writing, "Nothing unusual here, just Chewbacca detained for being without documents while driving Darth Vader to the elections in Odessa."
The man in the Chewy costume was hustled into a police van for causing a disturbance (in the polling place, not in the Force) while trying to vote for Vader. He appeared in court and was fined a grand total of 170 Hryvnia, or about $7.50, for his administrative offense. His real name has not been reported.
There have been several Darth Vaders on the ballots in the Ukraine in the past few elections. Sixteen Vaders ran last year, many of them legally changing their name and campaigning in full Imperial regalia, complete with the helmet and mask combo. A gaggle of Darth Vader candidates may seem to be making a mockery of the Ukrainian political system, but reports suggest that this election has been mired in dirty tricks and controversy since day one. Ukrainians seem to be using Vader, the ultimate pop-culture icon of power, control, and villainy, to make a point about their options in the country's political field.
